    I thought, at first, you were talking about that One Legged Golfer Carlton wrote about...but,

    Spec work for copywriters should be a NO 98% of the time.

    The times I would consider it is with a written agreement, and based on the results of the copy (as they spend their money to test)...and those would be few and far between.

    • Thing I hate most is when people mistake writin' words for readin' 'em out.

      "Yeah, sure you can gimme 10,000 words of hi concept gold dust between pee breaks. Hey, c'mon, it's only letters, sentences an' paragraphs."

      But mostly, you gotta swing round all kinds of stuff before you get to any words at all — big ideas, themes, images, whatever — an' that might mean takin' a bath or slopin' off down the park to kick a few dogs.

      Gettin' this part right is like blendin' the milk of multiple cows by makin' a 3D Venn diagram outta their udders — all without recourse to surgery.
