To everyone successful - How did you get your first client?

Completely new to copywriting and I don't know much. Thanks!

  • I got mine in all the wrong ways.

If you're starting out - start by reaching out to people you already know who may be in the market.

    And read http://www.warriorforum.com/copywrit...pywriters.html.

It answers all these questions you have as a newb - but it takes some digging.
  • I got my first client right here on the Warrior forum and today he is
    an Internet Millionaire. I'm not.

  • I was an in-house guy for years before freelancing, local radio then catalogs. Wrote for Bass Pro Shops mostly. Tons of fun. I can tell you 100 different ways to say "this lure catches big fish".

But after I went freelance, I got my first client at a seminar. One of the speakers--Alex Mandossian--found out I had a catalog background and hired me virtually on the spot to write some autoresponders for him. That turned into a long term relationship, a ton of A-level client referrals and eventually a highly successful career. Always be grateful to Alex. (You can read the whole story at AutoresponderCopy.com).

These days I mostly coach and teach copywriters on how to get themselves "client ready" fast and start marketing to the lowest hanging fruit. But here's the thing: I spent over $5,000 (that I didn't really have) to fly across the country, attend that seminar and put myself in front of some big players. If I hadn't taken that step of faith, I would have never met Alex there (as well as Joel Comm, who also became a client) and my career would have taken a dramatically different path.

So the moral of this story is, if you're sitting there waiting for the phone to ring, you'll be waiting a long time. Get out there and MAKE it happen. Or it won't--simple as that.

    • I don't know you Jay, but I know OF you through various outlets. I dig your style and think you're a pretty cool dude.

  • LOL I bet you're a crack up in person. For clarification - first heard of you through Peter Bowerman. He's the dude I credit with helping me launch a career in copywriting. It was a true treat to meet him a couple years ago when he came through the Bay Area.
  • I got my first 'copywriting' client through eLance (upwork now, I think).

A lot of people dislike the platform, and a LOT of the jobs are crappy, but you can occasionally find gems that pay well.

Other than that, the Warrior For Hire section of this forum has been great for sourcing clients, and once you get a few good projects under your belt, the beauty of word of mouth comes into play!

    Good luck!

    Alex

    • Jay White that's awesome. Great to hear your doing well!

I actually tried googling for seminars that teach/ mentor and found a few things. Any recommendations from anyone? That includes websites that teach as well.

Also, any other recommendations for someone with 0 experience on getting a first client? Thanks yall!
  • Provided a Free Report:
    - I got my first Client by preparing a free report on the Client's website.

    Value Driven:
    - In this report I provided as much value as possible.

    Demonstrated my Skills:
    - The report showed my skills in copy-editing and the Client believed I could offer them enormous value (which I subsequently did).
