Did HE Make Them Rich or Did I? Expert Opinion Needed "Right away"

Okay, I've never seen this discussed anywhere, though admittedly I haven't really looked either..

Keep in mind, I'M FAR FROM AN EXPERT in Copy....I'm More like an enthusiast....It's something I really enjoy learning...

I would like to get some opinions on which copy reads better.,,,

I tend to like the 3rd person letter better....Not just the headline either.

Me writing, talking about myself in 3rd person as If I hired a copywriter...

Or

Me writing and talking about myself like I am the writer....

When going through Halbert and Carleton's stuff, a lot of the time they are writing in 3rd person...which--To me--Reads like the entire sales letter is a testimonial rather than a sales page....

Also the in the third person it's way easier...And in my opinion way more believable than in the first person.....

Plus, when I read someone talking about someone else, my defenses drop naturally because i feel on some level that I'm not being sold.

There's a few minor differences between the two letters, but mainly it's the perspective.

Have any of the you 'Big dogs" in here done any testing between the two?

Sorry - couldn't get the opt-in box to go away long enough that I could read the copy on your pages. I clicked the X in the corner and box came back again.

It's triggered by your mouse going to the top of the web page (like you're about to leave it to close the tab/window), and when you hit the "X" and try to move your mouse down the page, it's triggered again. You can click the red bar on the top to drag it down the page, hit the X, and you'll be able to move your mouse without it coming right back up.

    Eric,

Most of the sales letter I've seen... including the ones I write myself... are written from a first-person perspective.

It's easier to get your point across... and it's also easier to evoke emotion, IMHO.

My "general rule" is that I only write in third person if there's some "borrowed credibility" or "special hook" that needs me to do so... otherwise I stick to first person.

    -Dan

P.S. Your copywriting is coming along nicely.

P.P.S. I think the first-person letter reads far better.

      I like the Carlton approach.

2 guys sitting in a bar shooting the s***... now what to you have to say to that person to get them hot for what you got.

Also, I like the approach of picturing someone you know as the prsopect and writing the letter to them.

I wrote a DM sales letter for a Seniors Home Care Service. I'm 33 now and I was 29 at the time. What the hell did I know about writing a letter to a seniors child... trying to convince them to get a company to provide a home care service for their parents? I didn't know anything until I started doing research... and lots of it.

I decided to pick someone that I knew that had concerns about their elderly parent being left alone in their home... they feared something bad may happen to them... they felt their situation was not safe but did not want to put them in a retirement home.

So, I "wrote the letter to them". Did it work? Well this company went from a struggling business to a 6 figure company... not bragging just stating a fact on how this stuff works. (well, maybe bragging a little )

      Take care,

      Bill
