Are the Golden Days of Blog(ging) Over?

Before you even try to think and write a powerful and an emotional "NO," you should be fully aware that I've read a dozen (a hundred would be a shameless exaggeration) heartbreaking articles and posts about this one. Punk isn't dead, including blogging. Yet, it's going to change and evolve inevitably. Blogs are still going to be around, but we may have to call, use, and create them differently. In this way, you're talking about the good old content actually. We're going to write for a ling time. The only question is, how we are going to call it. I'm not saying that the days of blogging are numbered, but rather that the golden days are over. Here are the reasons:

#1 It's too crowded here, my blogging brother

There are so many new blogs and posts being delivered to this world that is obviously useless to try to keep a track. It is true that there are countless new blogs making our brave cyber world be a better and more readable place. Yet, it is also true that many of them disappear over night. The fluctuation is very dynamic, so no one is paying attention. Yet, it is only a matter of time before the mortality rate of blogs surfaces up.

#2 Is it worthy of all of your trouble?

You're a brave new blogger. Great! Welcome to the club. Now, how do you plan to promote and ensure the very survival of your blog? Do you really think it is going to be that easy? We aren't talking about the competition. This is a free cyber-land with plenty of room for everyone, who has something to say, share, or write. Yet, this overwhelming abundance of blogs isn't your ally, but rather your worst enemy. All front row seats are already taken. So, if you want to be noticed, you have to build a new building.

#3 Fast Food Blogs

It's the bitter truth of the blogging world. You write a blog in an hour. It's been read for two hours. Three hours later your blog is history. There are no long lasting blogs. If you have some complaints regarding time, then you're free to write a novel. Otherwise, it is what it is right now. You're going to be forgotten just like that. So, get over it, or find something else to do. However, it is still painful to witness how blogs are being used for short-term goals and one-time only specific scenarios.

#4 Have you seen blogs run by Internet marketers?

Oh boy, you're going to be so disappointed. Most of them manage and update their blogs, as this is some kind of punishment for them. You can find a handful of blogs worth reading and that's it. Either there are no more blogs to read, or they're written in such a way that you can feel this attitude, oh I have to write a new blog today, let me just get over it as soon as possible. It's a shame how some of these VIP marketer's blogs look in terms of both design and content quality.

#5 Free Blogs will be an endangered species

Who will be crazy to write blogs for free? You will either witness a situation where the bloggers abandon their own famous blogs to support corporate blogs or begin charging access to content, which was once free. If you think this is an exaggeration, you just sit and wait for time to prove you right or wrong.

#6 Mobile is NOT Blog's best friend

Let's save breath. Mobile is the future. So, what can blogging expect from this mobile future? Would there be a room for blogs? Well, people who loved blogs are certainly not going to miss an opportunity of reading and sharing them on mobile devices. However, we have every reason to believe that other forms, especially short ones and videos, are going to take over. Every resistance is futile, isn't it?

#7 Extremely demanding form doomed to fail

Have you ever tried to write a blog? How long it takes to write a 500-word long post? Two times a week. We're already talking about a thousand words. That's 4,000 words a month or almost 50,000 words a year. For your information, the publishing industry expects from you to submit a novel anywhere between 70,000 and 100,000 words. You believe in a fairy tale called the short forms. Good luck with that. If you try to write less than 350 words per post, then we aren't talking about blogs, but about something else.

The final judgment

Again no one is trying to eliminate good old blogs. Yet, is it fair to believe that the golden days of former glory and influence didn't become a thing of the past? Stop fooling around with adaptation and evolution stories. Also, content and blog aren't the same things. We have had some lovely time together, but that's about it. As a blogger, you don't have to parade with a sign going out of business, but you definitely need to accept - business not as usual.

This has nothing to do with copywriting. Please don't post irrelevant articles here.

Have you read the book Purple Cow by Seth Godin? I think you should.

It is true that people get bombarded with information and advertisement in the current day and age. But you will be able to cut through all that if you provide something with high enough value.

That is the final verdict. People are going to pay attention to whoever who provides them a TON of value. Basically all the Purple Cow will grab peoples attention.

I agree with this statement, everything can work, if you caught people attention, even a blog.

Guess I have to agree. It has become overcrowded these days, when it comes to new content and info. Yet, we shouldn't lose all hope. If you can find your own shiny object to get people's attention, then you're a winner. Still searching, lol.

This is exactly the forgettable stuff that gets lost out there in blogland. Nothing new, nothing credible. Extraneous words, unsubstantiated assumptions.

You stand out by thinking (and writing) differently, Nesha. I know you've got it in you to do better.

Agree. Please take into consideration this one belongs to my old "article" days. I'm here merely to honor your time and comments. Just check the dates. Just follow the time line of my latest threads. A change is more than obvious. Cheers. Nesha

        Good. Keep it up.

You want to make real money in this field, you do it by having original thoughts and ideas, not falling in with thousands of other "content" creators. Idea people are invaluable.

Content writers, for the most part (there are SOME exceptions - mostly with good business acumen and marketing experience), are line item expenditures. One can be replaced with another fairly quickly - thereby becoming a commodity and driving the price down.

Someone with original ideas that work? That stuff can be borderline priceless to someone's bottom line.

I'm really thinking about a thread: Rewriting industry is a creativity killer and there's nothing we can do about it. Clients are also to blame. Just finished one "creative rewriting" task. Copyscape report was OK and my client was thrilled. I dared to suggest a thing or two. Do you know what happened? He was like, that's OK, but I need a safe bet. Let's take someone else's article and reworded in our "own way." I was like, yes sir, when I'm gonna get paid. I'm a machine who knows that Copyscape is gonna scream if you leave three identical words in a row from the original article. That's all. The whole beauty of "writing." I'm tired. When writing used to be my hobby, it was funny, now it's not. Thx. N

Yeah, but if you're rewriting someone else's content and THEN suggesting original ideas, you're not really an original idea person.

Try adding your own twist to the topic to begin with - you'll start finding clients who appreciate original ideas as opposed to "safe bets" (hint - there really aren't any safe bets, and businesses don't tend to experience huge growth without calculated risk).

Guess, I have to read the book. Right? It's the second or third time I hear about this "purple cow," lol. As long as I don't turn into one, we should be just fine. Thx. Cheers.

  • Holy Cow,

    What a relief.

I was out at grannies plot hewing some pines for a clog off this 4th of July.

I thought you said the Golden Days of Clogging were over.

Looks like our dancing on graves program is still on.

Blogging - Clogging, lol. If you allow me to suggest some additional activities for 07/04. I saw the Independence day 2. Can't recall the exact title, lol. Yet, for what is worth, it was good to see all of those likable faces after 20 years. Can't believe it was that long. Finally, I'm more familiar with klomp than clog concept, lol. Cheers!

I agree with the sentiment that the kind of content you created in here, is not up to the best practices standard. However, one should not that your work actually did suceed in creating a conversation about blogging and its place in marketing today.

Myself, I am quite a creative and free thinker, and when I create content I always try bo build my content on credible sources. As an academic I like to back my claims up with facts. Not just state questions and or my own thoughts. I want MY content to be a real source for information. As we all know, good quality content always wins in the end.
