You can write some sample letters, but if you're anything like me you're probably very averse to working for 'free'.

Surprisingly, I rarely get asked for samples - even back when I was much greener. And I'm pretty sure it's because my pre-project conversation with the potential client lets them know I'm the real deal.

Here's what I do...

First, I establish control of the conversation. I'm the captain of the ship, pointing it in the right direction and letting the breeze take us there.

Secondly, I build value by asking the client questions. I ask them about their current situation, their targets, how much more money they think they can make. I show an interest in key metrics they use in their business.

Thirdly, I ask them what they value when they hire copywriters. They'll usually give me an answer to do with communication (there's another tip... be great at communicating with clients).

And ONLY then do I turn the mic over to them to ask questions. Usually I've covered everything and all they want to know is 'how much?'

Now, what I've written here really does work - but it might be hard to use with such a small explanation. BUT if you understand it enough, then remember...

All it takes is one client to be convinced you're the real deal to put some work in your portfolio.
