Some Fun: Copywriting Music

Alright guys - set your burdens down for a minute and hang with me.

What music do you listen to (if any) while you write? What grabs your muse and shakes out the best material?

I find that some solid gold oldies sets me on the right path. Right now I've got Pandora set to "Herman's Hermits". We've got some delicious Herman's Hermits (obviously), The Monkees, Beach Boys, and The Beatles playing at the moment.

So. How about you?

I LOVE music... I play guitar, love all kinds of music from rock to bluegrass and almost anything in between...

But I can't focus when I'm writing when I have music playing. I know other people can, for some reason I can't.

So I write in silence. Not as bad as it sounds.

This is OT, but I just noticed you're from Springfield, MO. I grew up in St. Louis. Good to see another Missourian around.

While not music I'd normally listen to for pleasure I actually listen to opera. For some reason it opens my mind up and gets me thinking clearly.

I guess its why people say you should play classical music to babies. It stimulates the mind.

        Anyway, it works for me.

Yep, born and raised here for the most part...

I've lived in KC. I've lived in Alaska, Albuquerque, San Antonio, Spokane... But for now I'm back home.

I'm thinking of moving to Vegas, California or maybe the East Coast soon, just to live life a little bit.

Are you a Cardinals fan? We're going to the World Series this year, I can feel it

You bet I am. Got the shirts to prove it

I wish I could watch more games than I do, but I am red through and through.

I used to live less than a block away from the Cubs stadium in Chicago. I would torture the locals with my Cards shirts Every now and then I'd get something thrown at me or a high five from a fellow believer. But it was usually just snide comments.

Maybe it's the fact that I'm a musician (played sax since I was ten... went to a music college and everything) but I cannot write while I'm listening to music... it distracts me.

When I write, it has to be in a calm, quiet place.. preferably with lots of sunlight and "nature sounds"... a park, my back porch... whatever.

My "office" (which is just a room in my house) gets a fair bit of natural light... and I can hear the birds outside.. the rustle of wind in the trees. It works well.

I have about 400 CDs in my office, covering everything from New Age, 60s/70s/80s/90s rock, alternative, blues, jazz, and even country.

Sometimes I write copy in silence but... when I need to get my adrenaline flowing, I throw on some headphones and jam away to any of the following:

      Major Motivation:

Joe Crocker (love his Best of album)
Van Halen (all of it except Gary Cherone as lead singer)
      Creed
      Whitesnake
80's Hair Metal Bands like Bon Jovi, Poison, Motley Crue, Def Leppard, etc.
      Stevie Ray Vaughn
      Kenny Wayne Sheppard
      Jeff Healy Band
      Buddy Guy
      Rocky IV Soundtrack
Vision Quest Soundtrack (especially Lunatic Fringe by Red Rider)

"Already had 2 cups of coffee and still need a slight music pickup"

      Billy Joel
      Rod Stewart
      Steve Miller Band
      Paul McCartney/Beatles

"Decompressing... time to have some fun."

      Hall and Oates
      Jackson Browne
George Thorogood ("One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer")
      Marc Cohn's Walking In Memphis
      James Taylor
      Fleetwood Mac

Comedy: Sam Kinison, Ron White, Steve McGrew, and Rodney Dangerfield can always make me laugh no matter how many times I've seen or heard them. (R.I.P. Sam and Rodney... I miss you guys).

it's usually metallica, megadeth, iron maiden, guns, motley crue (80s metal and hard rock basically)

but now i'm moving into bob seger and dire straits... i'm in freaking love with sultans of swing!

at the same time, i'm listening more to the grunge (it really sounds like they were sky high on coke... or speedballing or something when they wrote all that music!) collection i neglected... especially alice in chains and pearl jam... done a lotta nirvana already..

ps: Brian! i love johanna's chopper. from pawnshop guitars right? have you heard tijuana jail? slash is godly on that song!
