How Important Is Design Of Site If Copy Is Good?

I keep seeing people say that ugly sales/squeeze pages convert better. Is this true?

Do you think too many graphics and bells and whistles clutter things up and confuse people?

Im redoing my site with my new copy and wondering if I should go super simple and let my copy do the selling.

It's not so much ugly vs beautiful but right elements in the right place vs missing one or more elements.

There are plenty of ugly pages that do not convert. There are plenty that do.

Same is true for beautiful pages.

It does not matter whether it is a beautiful or an ugly element that distracts the prospect; it matters that something distracted the prospect.
