Found a niche, need help with getting started

So much talk about niches.....
But it makes sense to write about something that you already have knowledge in and a passion for.....and where there are dollars to be made, of course.
I am a bit ovewhelmed as I have been studying copywriting most of the day, took an hour for a web copywriting conference call and then got online to "research" a unique niche.

I have a personal interest and experience with Weight Loss Surgery (WLS), in particular the Roux en Y Gastric Bypass. SO , I think to myself..."WLS is a niche, and Roux en Y is a niche in a niche...." Hmmm...now what?

My head is spinning and I need help in setting my next course of action. I am open to ideas and suggestions.....
Thanks,
JR

Type it into Google and see what others are doing. Join some forums that focus on surgery or weight loss and take it easy. The world wasn't made in a day and you might spend a long time learning before it all comes to you.

Doing a little keyword research is always a great step to take when you're at this point.

For example, the search term: Roux en Y Gastric Bypass has only 5 searches a day approx.

Gastric Bypass Surgery has a little more, 3189 daily searches approx.

    Figures from Seobook's tool.

That should give you a better idea of the market.

      Thank you for your ideas.
I appreciate your doing a keyword search for me!
Now, I did the same for gastric bypass surgery and got
      Roux en Y 480 and 590
weight loss surgery 246,000 and 241,000

But now I am really confused as to how to evaluate these results.
And why did I get different numbers than you?

Man, I have to get back to the drawing board.

I am doing lots of research, am also living it....so the experience is pretty personal.
I am surprised at some of these numbers, we have billboards and television ads all over my community for this surgery.

        Hi Jane - np

The exact keyphrase I entered was "Roux en Y Gastric Bypass" so that may account for the difference. When just typing in "Gastric Bypass Surgery" it showed that there were about 19 searches a day for Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery (might be the dashes) and 41 for just Roux-en-Y.

I think there is potential here, especially since you have such a personal angle. You may just need to widen the net a little bit. Relying solely on organic traffic only is probably not the best option here, but by taking in part in related forums, using Yahoo answers and of course PPC, you may be able to carve quite a niche out for yourself.

Don't give up Just see how to make it work for you. You may even want to take your efforts offline since there seems to be a big demand in your community. You could submit a short piece to a local paper, and use that to drive traffic to your site, you could place ads, etc...

Just tossing some ideas out there

        HTH,
        Cary

    Jane,

How do you plan on monetizing this niche?

    Adsense ads? Your own infoproduct?

I don't imagine there are many affiliate programs you could promote in this niche so you should really think about how you're going to make money in this niche BEFORE putting too much time and effort into it.

Although there are searches... that doesn't necessarily mean there are going to be ways for you to profit from the niche.

That's not to say there's no money in the niche... those doctors and surgeons in your area promoting through billboards are obviously making money performing the surgeries... but how does that translate into profits for you?

    Love all of your replies!

Well, I was thinking of an e-book, outlinig the pre surgical research, the actual surgery and the Life After Surgery aspect. Mayb include recipes, or do a seperate book of recipes.
My outlet for these would be the online support groups that I see.....many, many!
Also a blog, I suppose. (Gotta get on that bandwagon!)
I was also going to try to market the e-book as a brochure type book to clinicshospitals in my area to use in their patient programs.
I also thought that I could help the medical facilities with their materials.

I am so new to this, so any ideas out there are welcome!
    Am I even close?

The online support groups you've found are goldmines filled with the issues, problems, concerns, and opinions of your market... dig deep into them to uncover the exact topics you should cover in your ebook.

As for marketing the ebook once it's finished... you should use an affiliate program and offer 50% or more commission to your affiliates.

As for finding affiliates... start by searching the top 10 keywords and contacting the top 10 sites listed in the search results to see if they'd be willing to promote your ebook -- don't forget to give them lots of tools to do that (short report, banners, blog posts, articles, etc).

Once you have some affiliates promoting the offer and driving traffic to your site your focus should be on testing the sales letter to make it convert at a higher rate so you can use those stats to convince more people to promote.

They're great idea for an info product and monetizing your website. Do you have any experience in creating products? If not i would suggest reading through as many "newbie" posts on here as you can to point you in the right direction of how to begin.

If you decide that an ebook is the way to go yuo should:

    - research the topic and compile as much expert info on the topic as you can
    - write the ebook (50-100 pages should suffice)
    - convert the ebook into PDF (look for a free converted)
    - create your website (do it yourself, find a free template or get a cheap web designer)
    - market and promote

    All the very best!
