When Sales Pages Aren't

I've been building websites since 1995. My company has built more than 1000 of them so far.

My personal evolution as to the ideal website has come to a point where I'm exploring the possibility that "every page is a sales page".

Less informational pages... more action pages.

With this in mind I've been exploring the world of copywriting. I've lurked on the outskirts of writing most of my adult life but I've always know better than to go too near that rabbit hole. I may never come out.

I'm looking to work with copywriters who know how to write sales copy that sells, converts achieves that call to action. Not for lengthy and expensive sales letters BUT for product and/or services pages that live within the larger framework of a website.

A different approach is needed of course, you simply don't have the number of words at your disposal to "make the sale". Your ability to tell a story is severely hampered. You need to include features as well as benefits.

How would a sales copywriter charge for this? By the hour?

I think there is a huge need in the larger world of traditional websites for copywriters with "call to action" skills that can "switch gears" and think smaller. Write killer sales copy that isn't over the top and is done in 5-700 words and includes a few quality images or even a video.

Thoughts?

Thanks for taking the time to read this. To be a great writer takes tremendous courage.

  • David;

Actually, what you're talking about is EXACTLY what I try to specialize in. Unfortunately it gets me into trouble from time to time... When you only write 3-4 pages of copy for a client, even though you KNOW it will convert (from experience, not just an educated guess), if they were expecting 30+ pages... Well, it doesn't often float too well. I'm learning that lesson the hard way now.

I work on an hourly AND flat rate basis for these projects... Basically I figure out how long it SHOULD take me, and bill the client for that. If I go over, whoopdy-doo - the client isn't over budget, and they still get great copy. I never go under... There is always more that you can do to a piece of copy. LOL!

I've tried to break into catalog copy for this exact reason - I seem to have a knack for being able to close in under 5 pages in the IM niche. In fact, I've had 5%+ response rates in under 5 pages in the IM niche.

You're a very forward-thinking person, and I admire you for coming out among the "I need 400 pages to sell my product, because everyone else does" people and saying this.

(Not everyone is like that, I do understand. But a copywriter who has worked hard on specializing in short copy doesn't need 400 pages to sell what a copywriter who specializes in long copy does.)

I'd be interested in throwing together a sample for you, and perhaps (if you like it) we can work on a few projects together. Maybe we can change the world! LOL

    Great post, David.

    • Ha - I just realized you're out in Vancouver. We really should work together - you would have a copywriter that believes in your vision that you can actually go for coffee with on occasion (I just so happen to be in Chilliwack - and no, I'm not a hillbilly, I grew up in Abbotsford. LOL!
