Confused who to hire for content work?

I have tried few times and failed ... I got website templates and then went out looking for content writers who can write for my website . The first question I get asked is how many words - i give it a guess and say 500 for home page. And I show them the ready templated wordpress site I bought and ask them to give content in the format that will fit everyplace where there is something written.

Well all of them say they will give and what I get is something a blog post. Then I ask the question how do I translate this lengthy 500 words blogs post into website format. I just given some few words to put in the headline and thats about it.

Now my main problem is for a business website the home page is never a blog post 500 words content. My question is who do I hire to get the content I want for our business website.

Well, it sounds like half the problem is you've been hiring the wrong writers for your webpage. (Have you been hiring your writers from low priced, freelancer sites?)

And the other half sounds like you don't quite know what YOU want on your own homepage?

    Simply put...

They're asking you how many words (because that's the only way they know how to do things)

And you're "guessing" 500 words (because you don't have a clear purpose for your homepage)

If the main criteria is only the number of words, then you'll probably continue to be frustrated by writers who don't know how to give you what you want.

So my first question for you would be... What's the purpose of your homepage?

Is it an introduction to your company, and/or your offer(s)?

Is it a gateway page, that directs people to delve further into your site?

Is it a direct response page, that is trying to elicit some direct action from your visitors? (direct sale...? contact you for more info...? sign up for a mailing list...? something else?)

(Note: If it is a direct response page you should expect to pay more, than if it's just a content page.)

You don't need to give me an answer to this question (because I'm not looking for any work right now) but perhaps you should start by asking yourself this question.

That way you can have some criteria ready when you find a qualified writer, who may ask you about word count, but may also ask you "What's the purpose of your homepage?"

And you can answer by saying something like...
"I'd like it to have enough words so the search engines find it valuable. But word count is less important than a compelling, brand driven message, that fits my purpose, and fits the format of my template."

You'll probably scare some content writers away with this answer. But the ones that know what you mean, will be more likely to provide you with what you're looking for.

Just keep in mind... Writers of this caliber will cost you more than just a couple pennies per word.

As for where to find them? There's a few impressive writers on this forum that can probably give you what you're looking for. (I won't mention any names in this open thread, because I'm sure I'd forget someone, and I wouldn't want to leave anyone out)

But search around the forum, and make your own decision on who to contact based on how they present themselves.

Best of luck to you in your search for a writer.

    All the best,
    SAR

Even if you have no writing skills, YOU are the best person to write about your business on your home and about pages. Write what you know and have it polished by someone you trust.

You don't need to hire anyone for this. If you don't know how to talk about your business and your mission, who does???

Nope... I usually find your insight to be on target. But I can't agree with this logic at all.

You know as well as anyone, how many different hats it takes to run a business. And outsourcing tasks is often a far better use of our resources, than spending time (a non renewable resource) doing things we suck at, or simply don't want to do.

Sure, I could do my own taxes. But I have other things to do with my time, and I'd rather just pay my accountant a few hundred dollars to take care of it for me.

Obviously, the OP would rather pay someone to write the content, instead of doing it himself (and based on the grammar in the original post, I'd say writing in English is not his strong suit to begin with)

Well, that's OK. You're entitled to the occasional mistake. lol

I agree with the overall concept of that statement - but there are certain things you just don't outsource. This is one of them.

You might not be qualified to do your own taxes without making serious, costly errors. I would never do my own taxes, either. But, I would never allow anyone to tell my story. That's just insane. We're talking about an hour of introspection and explanation. If a business owner can't muster that, they shouldn't be in business. That's simply embarrassing on so many levels.

That's why I said he should tell his story and have it polished, meaning edited for grammar and punctuation, as well as possible sloppy content, where needed. I'd rather pay someone to do almost everything in my life, but it's my responsibility to put my best foot forward when presenting my business to the world. I'd never trust anyone to do that.

A "professional" writer who knows how to ask the right questions, and and write compelling content?
More trouble and expense than necessary. The OP should buck-up and give it his best shot. Who knows the surprise he might be in store for and the self-confidence it could initiate for other tasks, going forward. Is failure guaranteed? I think, not.

I'm guessing you're a content writer, so I would understand you pushing your position. :-)

A lot of ghost writers, and biographers might take offense to that statement

Nope. I'm more of a Direct Response Copywriter. So I don't really have a horse in this particular race.

Just trying' to tell it like it is.

I just hope I never experience that. Not sure that my over-inflated, self-image would survive that. lol

C'mon. Stay on point. Apple and oranges. With that said, if I were going to write my life's story, I certainly wouldn't even remotely consider having someone else do it. The intimacy and complexity of my long personal struggle would be impossible for someone to tell, regardless of how much of the story I could relate to them and their ability to actually grasp it. No. These things are too personal, unless you're looking for nothing more than a shallow representation of your story. That's not the ghostwriter's fault. They're starting from a position of weakness and there is no amount of questions that can be asked and answered to alter that fact.

No. I believe you are trying to tell it as you see it. For me, that could never be the way that it is. :-)

            Cheers.

I'd hire a freelance writer with a well-stocked blog who charges healthy rates. Look for skilled freelancers on Google; these folks can write their rear ends off and show so through their blog posts. Plus when they charge $100 or more for 600 words you know that they know their worth. Good news; you will be dealing with a confident, clear and competent writer who gets the job done.

Thank you guys for your input.

I have hired writer with varying costs but not at $100 for 600 words mark.. but not for $10 for 500 words either.

Yes I give in my business mission , vision etc., etc., but in a format that I can produce and I am not either skilled in creating websites nor have writing skills, so I have to get some help here.

Sounds like the suggestion is to hire a writer who charges more and the job will be done well ?

  • Thing to remember always 'bout most writin' stuffs is how they AIN'T LIKE BABY HAMSTERS.

So see here a recent noospaper offer from my local BABY HAMSTERS 4U DISCOUNT WAREHOUSE ...

Tellya, if less is more this is way generous!

Lookit how muchya SAVE bulkin' up the numbers!

Ditto there is this idea that a better message follows bigger bucks whenya pay for copy or content per word.

But who wants a home so fulla baby hamsters you can't get from your bed to the your bathroom an' you scared to invite granma over less'n she SUFFOCATES TO DEATH?

Similarly, words can smother your message an' make its journey from pitch to reader kinda AGONY.

That is why you should always hire Princess Balestra to fix up your writin' smarts.

    Hello
First, you need a decent task: what exactly the content should be like, the word count, the sentence structure, etc.

I'd choose a freelancer from Upwork or Freelancer. com, but you need to check if they are not on the black list.

You may also find some tips on susangreenecopywriter.com page - no need to read everything, just choose what you need.

This is not about a blog. It's about marketing content for his website.

      Read before responding, please.

Content writing is way too different blog post writing. I don't understand why your writers are writing blog post as content. Web content is usually promotional and describes the services the business and encourage client to choose their services. I would recommend to hire professional content writing services only to write you content for your business site. I hired Content Development Pros to write content for my site and I really liked their work.

I think the site should contain professional texts, especially if it is a home page. Especially since you have a business site. The text should be very competent, informative. Recently I ordered good texts from professional writers. I was pleased with the quality of the performed work.
