Recommended copywriting courses?

I was been bitten by the copy bug a few weeks ago and have been churning through as much reading as I can to learn more about how to develop my copywriting skills.

I'm an excellent academic and clinical writer in my daily career but that doesn't naturally translate into copywriting at all. And I'm finding that the way I'm approaching things at the moment is leaving me feeling floundering and unfocused.

I'm ready to plunk down some money for a course of some sort.

Unfortunately, there are so many options that even looking can get a bit overwhelming.

I'd like to get a comprehensive look at copy techniques and how these apply to not just sales letters, but also social media and content marketing.

I'm looking for something in the $500 or less range and have come up with:

- John Carlton's Simple Writing System
- Kick-Ass Copywriting Secrets of a Marketing Rebel
- Kopywriting Kourse (although the Krusty the Klown name makes me kringe)
- AWAI Accelerated Program for 6 Figure Copywriting

I'm sure there's more I missed. What would more experienced folks recommend for a well-rounded and complete course?

I welcome all input!

Not sure you can find a mentor for 500 bux, but that might be a down payment for one. Anyhow, that same 500 dollars can buy a lot of those courses USED on eBay, do a search there for copywriting courses. Also search for books, and then do courses on selling, salesmanship and also books on those subjects. You will find your 500 bux could go a long way.

But let's back up. A few weeks ago a bug bit you, the copy bug. HOW? What was it that got you interested, and where did that happen?

See, you have to know WHY you want to take on this beast, what is your motivation? What is it you expect to get from writing copy?

IF you approach it in an "academic" way, even a clinical approach, you will avoid a lot of the hype and false promises being made in what today has become a common commodity. A cheap commodity.

Do yourself a favor. Visit these 3 sites; Freelancer, Fiverr, and Upwork and search for both copywriters and content writers. And then for social media copywriters.

Just so you know, and understand, THOUSANDS of others have been bitten by the same bug. Know what you are getting into.

Then visit as many blogs, FACEBOOK groups and see the everyday question from the newer writers, asking HOW TO GET CLIENTS. Start there.

HOW will you get clients? Are you going to compete with many thousands of other newbies in the biz? What will you do differently?

You want to establish a FOUNDATION on which to build this "career", if that is what you choose, but sometimes those bugs we get itch for awhile and then reality sets in and the bug disappears.

OK, you will get at least 20 different answers, right today, at the Gary Halbert Facebook group, a similar question has been asked by someone searching for the HOLY GRAIL of copywriting.

Apparently, people are being bit by the bug of the EASY promise, that if you can write a simple letter, you can become a six figure a year earner, pretty easily. If that was or is part of your motivation, go back to what it was that got you interested in this to start with.

There is NO Holy Grail, or one-size fits all comprehensive course, book, or even a mentoring program. People have spent a few thousands of dollars with a mentor, and at the end of the day, MAYBE can write copy but CAN'T get work. Which is why I encourage you to start thinking today about what you want to do and HOW You are going to get clients.

Gary Halbert is one of the people you will come across in the copywriting jungle, as is Dan Kennedy, Jay Abraham, John Carlton, and about 25 others. You'll be told you must read this, that or the other. I suggest you start with Cult of Copy Facebook group and read Colin Theriot's post on getting started, which basically says, NO RULES.

It is a lucrative field for those SELLING courses, books and mentoring. Easiest and fastest way to a six figure a year copy business is to TEACH COPYWRITING to those who have been bitten by the bug. You just need to stay one class ahead, like a kindergarten teacher.

    OK< OK...alrighty now.

I'm going to give you two names. Use Google, search books, and magazines and other files when you do a search. These two guys created modern copywriting over 100 years ago. EVERY course you could buy, every book you could read will have elements which these two people wrote about and USED in the beginning of Modern Advertising. They influenced every modern guru, and even those dead old guys from the 20th century built their legends on these two copywriters.

Their names were; Walter Dill Scott and John B. Watson. Both from psychological backgrounds, both got into advertising, and created the foundation of modern copywriting. Yet, you won't find a single person other than me, who suggests them, or for that matter even knows who they are.

Now you do. But I urge you to go back a few weeks and ANALYZE, USE your clinical and critical skills and ask yourself what it was, what is IT about writing copy that has you so excited. THEN, you can enter the vortex of confusion, getting overwhelmed by all the different gurus, courses, books, mentors, all those people who want to

    GET MONEY FROM YOU,

Which is what they want to teach you, right? How can YOU get money from other people with your new found copy and content writing skills. The best course you may find is in the PROMOTIONS and sales pages of those, including the ones on your list that you want to toss your 500 bux at. Ask why?

And if you analyze your reasons for choosing those, chances are you know more about copywriting, influence and getting people to buy what you offer, than any of the education you so eagerly want to buy. Maybe your best education for writing effective copy could be found in those first few intersections you had with copywriting.

Thanks GordonJ! I actually have no intention of "selling myself" as a copywriter. Like you said, the pond is just overflowing with folks who are trying to do the same thing!

I'm interested because I've been blogging and doing social media for a while and have just started dipping my toes in eCommerce. It hit me the other day while I was doing research on product description writing (something that loads of people overlook or just plain suck at) that copywriting is really the underlying current that connects all of these things. And I realized that if I could actually sit down and learn these techniques in a systematic way, I could improve my performance across all of these domains.

So long story short, it's more for my own personal gain than to make a bazillion dollars writing for other people.

Thanks. Go now, to biblio, buy ONE book. It is by Roy Garn, THE MAGIC POWER OF EMOTIONAL APPEAL. I guarantee you will get more good ideas and practical advice from that one book, than from ANY of the copywriting courses, I know, I own or owned them all.

You will find every one of those gurus in your post will teach you to appeal to the emotions, the work done by Watson and Scott. Roy Garn's book, although old by today's standards, covers these emotional appeals.

Buy it, read it, then ask simple questions about which of the emotional appeals to use on your prospects.

Do this, then contact me, I'll help you for FREE, to master these principles. Hurry, cause this book is cheap today, but goes up in price everyday. Check the prices at Amazon.
