I want to go into copywriting but I need to start somewhere...perhaps a

As someone who has read them all, plus the very high priced copywriting courses, if I had to do it all over again I would buy just one book. Breakthrough Advertising.

I come to a web site of Ted Nicholas, and thinking to find out more about his product" Billionaire Dollars Marketing Secret", send a ticket to his support, but no reply...

Just wonder anyone used/ using his product? Please advice.

That is indeed a great course Paul. Good call!

The most in-depth copy course I've ever come across (and I've been through damn near all of 'em) is Clayton Makepeace's Ultimate Desktop Copy Coach.

The thing is over 1000 pages long.

There are some real gems in there BUT... it does make writing copy seem like seriously hard work. I wouldn't be surprised if it put a lot of newbies and business owners off (although this may have been Clayton's secret master plan. )

NOt as impressive as Ted Nicholas Book " Billion Dollar Marketing Secret", His sale copy wow me away. But I just don't know whether it is more on copywriting or marketing....

Nobody has mentioned Paul Hancox video collection. I checked
some of them out and they are pretty good. He covers the basics along
          with 'advanced' techniques.

I think there are 25 videos and he writes out 3 letters.

I have not bought the series but from what I have seen it looks like
          a great resource.

I can attest to it from personal experience - it's a good buy. Paul Hancox does a splendid job of breaking everything down into bite-size chunks. He also includes lots of commentary on sales technique etc., not just "how to write a sales letter".

You should definitely look into it, especially if you're a beginner.

That's deep and funny at the same time Matt!

But for sure it's one of the strategies of providing SERVICE oriented
info products to show the potential client what YOU have to do as
the service provider rather than what you expect them to do.

Ultimate Sales Letter by Dan Kennedy was also written as a lead generator
and not as a book to teach people how to write copy. In this case
the book is simple and short BUT shows a lot of steps.

Breakthrough Advertising is definitely not one for a beginner IMHO. I've found it to be a hard read and I've reviewed over 40 different copywriting books/courses/DVDs to date.

If you're on a tight budget, then going with the top recommended books is a good starting point.

If you want to go the route of a comprehensive course, then I'd recommend either Clayton Makepeace's one that Matt mentioned or John Carlton's Simple Writing System.

      Hope that helps,

      Mike

You should check out Robert Plank or Jason Fladlien.
If your looking for something that will get you started fast. Both of those guys give you very simple step by step instructions to produce copy fast.
I will give you one tip they gave me. You have to have something to tweak and change even if its horrible.
There stuff is inexpensive and a great resource.
They have warrior special offers all the time.

    hope this helps.

yeah, "Breakthrough Advertising" will go right over your head
if you don't have a grounding in writing sales copy already.

For online copy Lenny Eng's "Confessions" is a good intro and
covers a lot of layout. Robert Boduch's course is very good
too and that's just about one of the best WSO deals I've seen,
because the guy is no Johnny-come-lately and the course
    deals with online copy.

If you want to learn the practice of real, pro-level copywriting
you need to read the classics... but if you just want to work
on your own websites and make them effective, several
sources cited here will help you in BIG, BIG ways... because
chances are you'll be doing some pretty dumb stuff with your
sites and, IMO, half of copywriting is getting rid of the idiotic
things we all do (unless we've trained ourselves otherwise)
    that kill response.

The reason copywriting is a skill is because it really goes against
our innate human nature in many ways. See, we're all selfish
by nature - but with effective copy you need to learn to
focus on the reader, not yourself, so there is a subjugation
of ego that needs to happen with a winning letter.

Most of the good copywriting books get into this issue, and
most online courses probably do as well. If you are totally
ignorant about copywriting and want to write online copy
only, and for yourself, try out some of the online courses
recommended here - esp. the Boduch WSO.

Karon Thackston is very rarely mentioned in these
type of threads. Check out her "Step-by-Step

". In my opinion it offers lots of
great content for anyone wanting to develop and
    hone their copywriting skills.

Jason Fladlien's "Copywriting Success Shortcut System" is a great bargain for people aiming to produce "near world class copywriting in just a couple of hours".

(Can't recall his exact words but the intent is the same. Nice 'stretch goal' for marketers intimidated by copywriting yet not at the point of hiring experts to do so for them.)

The files are all on mp3 and a great listen while you're on the move. (They're mostly screencasts but I can still see most of what he's talking about in my head, having already watched them once.)

I'm also a student on RayDal's copywriting protege course and believe he's still running a WSO to recruit a few more conscripts, sorry volunteers ;-)

I like what I've seen there so far. For example, some great training videos, lots of downloadable critique videos, Ray's ebooks and also a forum to browse through past students q & a plus ask some of the maestro himself.
If you're not at the 1-1 copywriting coach stage (or budget) it's an option worth considering.

    Hi Everybody,

I'd like to second (or third...) some of the other recommendations here.

I've studied a fair bit of copywriting and have most of the courses mentioned.

    I'd suggest:

Start with the free courses. I'm watching Brian's Copydaddy course right now. Thanks, Brian!

Get Fladlien's course. It's good. I've gone through that course about 8 times so far. Watch how he weaves his copywriting suggestions and formulas with marketing his own products. You should have his letters in your swipe file.

The video course by Paul Hancox is also very good. I've gone through that one twice so far. You also get to watch as he writes a sales letter "live." That's very helpful.

Also, when you're ready, consider joining Raydal's coaching program. Learning sales letter critiques is very important (but is not mentioned very often).

Another thing - a lot of it comes down to how you study. While you can learn a lot from watching, listening and reading, unless you're practicing and testing your skills will be limited.

Set aside some time every day to simply copy sales letters by hand, or at least parts of them, guarantees, openings, etc.

If you do this you will progress rapidly.

    Hope this helps.

    - Sean Landon
