Calif. pastor takes in $2.4M after donations plea - Yahoo! News

The bottom line is in just 5 days time Rick Warren raised over $1.4 million dollars MORE then what was needed to cover his churches debt via his website thanks to just 2 things: a letter and a list.

The letter cited the church's accomplishments in 2009 and detailed how the donations would be used, including the church's food pantry, homeless ministry, counseling and support groups.
What recession?

Oh come on. Calling Rick Warren a "California pastor" and saying all he had was a letter and a list is like calling Hillary Clinton a "mom in New York State" and saying all she had to do to raise millions of dollars was make a bunch of phone calls.

      True but highly, highly misleading.

We don't talk about it much here, but direct mail fund raising is a huge industry.

The need to be altruistic is a strong emotion in a lot of people.

    Hi Justin,

You are right, regarding the list and the letter framing. Very well done.

But I believe you are also missing a key ingredient, making it sound easier than it might be.

Rick Warren has a reputation. He has a brand. His words are extremely relevant to the people that he connects with. But more importantly he has a DEEP AFFINITY with his congregation. His people would crawl across broken glass to help him and smile while doing it.

That to me, IS "the secret sauce."

    - Rick Duris

PS: And if anyone has a copy of that letter, I am sure folks would be able to learn from it. I know I would.

reminds me of the old fund raising letter by Harv somebody

I had a copy at one time but what he did was Challenge the people to match his own contribution and got something like an 80% response rate.

maybe some of the old farts around here remember more fo the details. I can say that because I am one.
