Can you suggest me a Copywriting course/book??

Hi Warriors,

I am not here to spark a debate on which is the best copywriting book/course out there. But I just needed a little help. I want you to suggest me just one copywriting book/course that will be best suited to my needs which are listed below.

1. I don't want to be a full time copywriter. I just want to copywrite for my own information products.
2. My budget is around $100.
3. I have only little knowledge of copywriting and I have never written a sales letter.
4. I only want to do copywriting on the web for my products. I don't want to do it offline.

I was looking for some basic to intermediate stuff that would get me started and help me write decent sales letters with decent conversions.

Regards..

If I could suggest only one course/book to someone wanting to write their own copy, it'd be SuperPowerCopy.com - Video Copywriting Course With 'Live' Writing Examples.

There are A LOT of great books out there, but they're not all comprehensive. It sort of takes awhile to connect the dots and get the psychology.

Paul's course that I linked to above does a great job of giving an overview, and you can watch him write in real time.

If you don't want to read a dozen books, it's not a bad way to go for a quick start. Another good course is 3hourad.com.

I'd download the free videos at Super Power Copy and use those to determine if you like Paul's teaching style or not.

    Good luck,

    -Scott

Yes, that's a called a "swipe file." Search for that term and you'll find previous discussions about it, including links to some great free swipe files. (Some of them are classic print ads but you easily adapt them for online.)

If you join the War Room you'll get access to several free ebooks about copywriting. If you join, send me a private message and I'll point out some gems.

P.S. I like the way you very clearly explained your situation & what you are looking for. That makes it a lot easier to help you.

Once you get an eye for what good copywriting looks like then you can build your swipe file for free. There are so many sales letters selling products online. Find some good ones and swipe them to help you generate good ideas for your sales letters.

      Hope that helps

There's a woman named Maria something, who was Mark Joyner's head copywriter when he owned Aesop Inc. She wrote a book which covers some nice concepts including what she has coined as "engagement devices" which are ways to get people to do something (anything) on your website... for example click a YES or NO checkbox.... and that engages them further into your copy. Maria states that their split testing proves that engagement devices work.

Anyone know Maria's last name, or the title of her book?

You can also outsource your copy in guru.com.

    Hi,
I would suggest buying Dan Kennedy's "The Ultimate Sales Letter". A great reference.
I also recommend Mel Bly's "Copywriter's Hand book". Both at Amazon for about $10-$12.

Any books by Joe Sugarman and Bob Bly. Likewise Dan Kennedy's books on copy. Ditto John Carlton's course. Alistair Compton's now classic and out of print "The Craft of Copywriting" is also worth tracking down if you can find it. I hope this helps. Good luck to you.

Serious, these guys kick ass and those books are cheap. That's a milllion dollar education for about $45 bucks.

Joe Sugarman is enviable. Damn the guy writes compelling copy. Brilliant! I think I even bought some of Joe's stuff when I was a kid.

You'll recognize that some of the most effective copy is subltle. Look at Bencivenga, MakePeace, D'Anna, Bob Bly, and Ogilvy's stuff.

It isn't this ridiculous in your face copy that many newbs write. It's powerful, subtle, and builds trust and credibility without being overtly salesman like.

That said, there are also fantastic hype guys like John Carlton and Matt Furey who deliver devastating kick to gonads right now and get you thinking "Hell yeah, I need to learn Karate so I can defend myself against a prison gang rape." Well, maybe not all that...but you get what I'm saying.

Check all these guys out. You can buy their books for peanuts and they're a fun read and great education. I know I've mentioned all guys up til' now but...the first 1/3 of Maria Veloso's book is good too.

      Good luck with your project.

This is all great advice. But look, if you just want to write a few letters for your projects you can get everything you need free here:

First, Go to my site and answer all of the questions on this page.

Second, go to this post here on Warrior forum and look at the formulas.

Third, go to Lawrence Bernstein's Info Marketing Blog and look at some of the classic sales letters in his fabulous archive (your instant swipe file).

Doing those three things should give you all the information (but not more than) you need to write powerful compelling sales letters...for FREE.

I was looking at this thread to find out which program I should purchase as well. I read what DougHughes wrote and then went to the thread he mentioned above. I printed the whole thread and turned it into a booklet. I now feel like I might be able to write half decent copy for my website. When I have a bit more of a budget I will definitely consider buying a program. But for now, this will do. Thank you!!!

      Stacey

P.S. The link to Lawrence Bernstein's blog didn't work.

      Bruce..
That's the risk you run when plumbing the internet for information, I suppose. People will recommend things they have no personal experience with, based solely on reputation, and will disguise it as first hand experience.

Do your due diligence, and caveat emptor.

The general problem I find with answers given to such
questions is that people seldom mention how many
copywriting books or courses they have read/taken.

So you don't know if the person is telling you to buy
the only book s/he ever read, or read 100 and recommends
    "the best".

That's why I always appreciate Mike H. answers to these
request because he always gives you a comparison with
what he has bought and read.

Always take these recommendations with a grain of salt
because many people haven't read 5 copywriting books
in their lives. But this doesn't prevent them from making
    recommendations anyway.

Don't mean to be harsh but it's true.

That's why I like to read Consumer Reports magazine
before making an expensive purchase because they
have reviewed a lot of competing brands before
    making a top choice.

    Dear Bruce,

Fastest way to see what is selling, how well and how to copy it (not steal it) just review great selling sales letters that are SELLING NOW~!

    1. Go to Clickbank.
    2. Create an account
    3. Read How to Review Gravity, and Clickbank Stats terms
    4. Find the keywords for your market, for your products you want to write about
    5. Plug them into Clickbank's search box, hit the button to search
    6. Review the top 10 sales letters by: Gravity, Popularity, Highest Sales, etc.
    7. Print out the best sellers that appeal to you
    8. Write out these sales letters in long hand, or type them to soak the copy into your head, the old timer's used to rewrite a sales letter 4 times.
    9. Take ahighligher and see if you can find the places in the sales letter where they were getting the sale... like "as you read on" or "when you click to order" etc. This is subliminal copy...see if you can find where they are subconsciously pushing the sale.
    10. Split the copy up into it's parts, intro, problem, product, benefits, guarantee, bonus, close, P.S. learn how to find these parts.

There is your 10 point list for writing copy, don't plagerize but rewrite your product copy looking at the Clickbank sales copy and plug in your own product. You will be surprised at how well you can write.

AND WHEN YOU GET SOME PRACTICE IN, NOW START WRITING FROM SCRATCH...and see how well you can do, then bring it back to the Warrior forum for help with the editing.

    Good luck,

    Jennie

Clickbank gravity is NOT a complete indicator of a well-written sales letter.

There are some Clickbank products with a well-written or high converting salesletter but gravity is NOT a true indicator of that.

If a product is offering a huge affiliate commission, then it will get a lot of traffic thrown it's way.

Fat Loss 4 Idiots has been a top-seller in Clickbank since 2004... has hundreds of Clickbank affiliates because it has a 75% affiliate payout. The sales letter has converted on average around 0.5% the whole time.

That hardly qualifies as a well-written or high converting sales letter.

The best way is to study either the classic copywriting books or top-rated courses. Once you have a basic understanding of copywriting, then you have a much better idea of what is a well-written salesletter and what is not.

      Hope that helps,

      Mike
