Learning to write better email copy...Which "guru" would you follow?

I don't subscribe to many email lists...none in fact. I had my reasons for this...mainly just clearing out the clutter in my life/inbox.

But in the spirit of learning how to write better email copy, I'd like to sign up to a small handful of IM lists.

Does anyone have any particular lists in mind?

Who would you consider to be the best email copywriter?

Thanks for your opinions,
Derek

Two "Gurus" immediately come to mind:

      1) Perry Marshall
      2) Glen Livingston

      Perry Marshall
His autoresponder sequence is second to none. The information he provides is quality. However, the emotional bond he creates with his list is amazing.

He is also one of the few IMer's out there send emails based on individual responsiveness.

For example, some of his emails contains links to other sign-up pages, which puts you on a different list. Bottom line: those that want to hear from him daily do, and others hear from him quarterly.

      Uses Infusion Soft

      Glen Livingston
He provides incredible quality information. He is dry. I'd imagine for Warriors, he'd be down right boring because his content is...well, full of content. A protein shake if you will.

However, if you love technical detail, then you'll love his autoresponders as well.

Another take away point from Glenn: He has a year-plus sales cycle. Unlike a lot of IMers who go for kill the right away, Glenn is happy to have you on his list for quite some time. What this means is that during that year you'll get some great information.

          Dear Derek,

It's a matter of personal style and approach. There are many really good copywriters. And their styles, their techniques, their USPs range all over the place.

Find one whose writings most closely match your own. This is important, and it's also a reason why you need to practice writing until your personal style evolves.

In regards to email writing, I found Jay White to be my ideal guru. This is because I personally have a strong ability to create scenarios and word-pictures that stick in the readers' minds. This also is Jay White's strong point. And I have a strong sense of ethics; I refuse to lie or inflate claims beyond reason. Jay shares that quality as well.

So get yourself in hand - grab that pen or keyboard and write, write, write! Write about anything that takes your fancy! Sell that TV you're watching. Get people interested in making that Shepherd's Pie you made for your dinner. Convince readers they can't live happily without a riding lawn-mower that can also plow snow from the driveway.

This is the real secret. I even wrote a sales letter for my Dentist while waiting for dh in his office. And sold fictitious dachshund puppies that my spayed little Ilse never had.

Then find someone successful who comes close to your own style. (You'll never really find someone to completely match you - that's the beauty of copywriting: there's totally room here for ALL of us!)

          Sincerely,
          Dot Pecson

I never really thought of that as way to get practice, but I love the advice. Thanks for sharing such valuable insight.

Plus, I like the idea of following a writer who closely matches my style. That's what I'm looking to now.

            All the best,

I second subscribing to Matt Furey's lists -- although he is not in the IM niche. He is the master of writing daily emails. Once you're on his lists, some of the first emails will be from an autoresponder, but after that, he writes them almost daily. That keeps them fresh and up to date. He often responds to what's in the news.

Jay White was also my autoresponder series writing mentor. I'm not sure, though, how to direct you to any samples. He mostly writes for IM gurus. You can now buy his course from AWAI.

Raydal's book on email copywriting is also recommended. I think his sig line will have a link.

    best, Rick

Hey there, this is dry old protein powder grey-bearded Glenn Livingston chiming in :-)

OK, I admit it, I'd rather educate than entertain... I guess I'm a frustrated college professor at heart.

But I'm WORKING ON MY STYLE. Just scan my blog post titles (GlennLivingston.com) for the last few months and you'll see the change:

      - It's Better to Sweat in Training Than Bleed in Battle
      - Warning: My Products May Cause Cancer
      - Are You Willing to Be Hated?
      - He Who Lives on Hope Dies of Starvation
      - Obliterating Writer's Block
      - Etc.

I kind of think of myself as the "Ultimate Tortoise" in the IM space. So I don't spend a lot of time holding up bright shiny objects.

Still, a little humor never hurts, right?

All reasonably bad jokes in response much appreciated.

      Sincerely,

      Glenn :-)

    Glenn-

LOL. You must be a guru with your grey beard. I bet once it turns white you can charge more!

The protein reference was more in comparison to Warriors who are looking to make $5,932 within 24hrs with no list, no ppc from the newest flavor of the month SEO trick.

Candy gets in the blood right away. Protein takes a while to digest (like a year+ sales cycle).

For the warrior market, they luv them some candy! Need that quick snort.

Although, I don't think the warrior market is the market you're going after. At least in my eyes.

In my mind, I call you after losing thousands or hundreds of thousands of dollars, and now want to do it right.

I do know that you have that A-Z blueprint for newbies who want to hear the truth, rather than visualize the dream. Don't have enough juice to post the link.

And your membership is great for people who want to do: WORK. The worst 4-letter! That thing called EFFORT.

Anyway, no disrespect on my part. I think if the IM market followed your value model the whole industry would be better for it.

And I think your use of autoresponders is a standard to aspire to.

    I like Ben Settle's emails.

Now that I've been at this a few years I only subscribe to a few lists these days because it's too much of a distraction otherwise. I receive inspiration constantly from the books I read, current events, conversations with friends and family, personal emails from friends, etc. and not so much from reading other marketers' emails.

    I just can't opt-out of Frank Kern's list.

He has a SHORT& SWEET approach - A few lines.

Half the time he points to something of real value to me.

HALF! Does anyone else do that?

I bought his Mass Control second edition
and there is some great email training in there.
