Head over to Amazon and pick up Commonsense Direct and Digital Marketing by Drayton Bird, and How To Write a Good Advertisement by Victor Schwab. Those will give you a good start on what you need to know. Once you've digested and understand them, you'll have a much better idea if copywriting is truly a profession you want to pursue.

I'd guess that English isn't your first language. You might want to get some books or a course on basic English language skills. You can also get started by composing your sentences here and anywhere else you write starting with a capital, ending with a period or question mark, etc.

If you want to become a copywriter, everything you write, whether it's a post on this board or a grocery list to yourself should be as well-written as possible. It will help you to establishe good writing habits. Good Luck.

    Hi Phil,
If you're looking for copywriting advice particular for online marketing you have to check out Mike Dillard. Both Magnetic Sponsoring and Traffic Formula(both versions) have been invaluable to me as a copy writer.

Magnetic Sponsoring is relatively inexpensive I believe about $20 or so. TF is more costly so you may want to save up for it, but its worth its weight in gold.

If you don't mind me asking, what's your background? Do you have a particular field interest in mind? I might be able to make further suggestions based on your intent.

    Best of Luck

I think, though it's incredibly necessary to be able to deliver your message clearly as a copywriter.. you must first be able to persuade people through your writing to buy a product if you want to be a copywriter.

First, make sure you think you have it in you to do just that... I guess you think you do.

Secondly (most importantly), you WILL have to improve your English writing skills which is pretty easy as you already know English.

Thirdly, get a COMPLETE Wren & Martin set for improving your English writing skills along with "writing copy for dummies" by Jonathan Kranz. If you've a problem with translation, keep a translation book as well for reference.

Fourthly, fail faster... (wierd.. right?) so that you can SUCCEED FASTER. Take action. Getting started takes its own time. Once you're set, you'll be able to make thousands of $$$$$.

Fifth, NEVER even listen to people who discourage you in any way. got it? so get going man..

    I highly recommend this course

    http://www.warriorforum.com/warrior-...-6-months.html

I'm part way through, and it is great - best of all you get feedback at every stage by a professional copywriter.

    Hope that helps

Hi lilphilupt, first thing, your ability to SELL is about a million times more important than your grasp of the english language, so ignore those members who chose to focus on that. Learn to sell and you'll write rings around them every time.

In fact your english teacher (or mine) couldn't write copy to sell money for free. Write like people talk, conversational, not proper. That's the problem with language courses, they show you the perfect way to speak the language, when 90% of the people speak in a more casual way.

The other secret I can let you in on is something which few writers do, and fewer still keep doing. But it will ingrain in your brain the way copy should be written: Write out successful ads and sales letters. By hand. Over and over. It's something I did to get the gist of how this stuff works. But it's too much work for most people, even though people who do it get good, fast. Look for stuff by Dan Kennedy, Gary Halbert, Trevor Crook, Pete Godfrey etc. Their ads and sales letters as well as their books and courses.
