Nice traffic but no sales, any suggestions for sales letter tweaking, please.

Hi everyone,
I have just joined the Warrior Forum and this looks like a great forum!

I have a site selling a book '101 Famous Quotes from Alice in Wonderland' and I am getting over 2000 visitors per day. But I only make 2-3 sales per week.

Could anyone give me some pointers for the sales letter? There must be something wrong...
I have read your great list of things to check before asking for critique and I have tried to apply most of them to my ability.

Here's my site:

alice-in-wonderland-book.com

I appreciate any help you could give me.

Thanking in advance,

Tuula

    I dont know:confused:

Honestly I cant really judge the copy at all, I am still shocked that such a product even exists!

I am still trying to decide whether this is a joke from one of the senior members!! although seems like a lot of work for one joke.

I will assume this is serious and give my opinion.

Where is your traffic coming from? I cant figure out how you are getting 2000 visitors per day for a site like this. Lets say 100 of those are actually looking for something like this, then the other 1,900 dont matter.

So in essence you may be only getting a handful of targeted traffic.

Look at your stats, where is your traffic coming from, what keywords. If you are using ppc what keywords are you bidding on?

If you are in fact getting 2000 people who really want something like this, then the copy does need a lot of work.

But i truly think this is more of a traffic problem rather a sales letter problem.

Pretty cool though! the fact that you are at least making some sales is nice! And it is a nice looking site to boot!

    Good luck!

My gut says the copy isn't the problem...

No offense (seriously)... But who wakes up in the morning and thinks "I MUST have these quotes from "Alice In Wonderland"...

I think the product is the problem. Could be wrong... Kinda doubt it though.

Not trashing the product, I just don't see it as something many people would want to spend money on.

    No offense, just an opinion.

Yep - the product. Why pay $9.95 for a book or quotes - that you can find for free on the net? Granted, you have 101 of them but with a little Googling you can find a bunch. I was thinking you could maybe push the "Missing Chapter" thing - but that's online for free also. 2-3 sales a week is good, considering. Maybe you need to be offering another "Alice in Wonderland" product and just use the Quotes book and the "missing chapter" as opt-in and "One Time Offer/upsell" bait?

Where are these 2000 visitors are day coming from? Sounds like they're "tire-kickers" ("tyre-kickers" Downunder) looking for free graphics or something. In other words you haven't targeted the offer properly. More keyword research needed perhaps?

  • Who is your prospect?

Who do they see as being their ideal self?

How does your product take them closer to becoming their ideal self?

How is the best way to convey that transition to them?

I am not sure who your ideal prospect is, but the sales letter seems to me to miss almost anyone. Why does someone buy a book of quotes? Well, chances are, they buy a book of quotes in order to use them in some public way--on their Facebook for example. Why would they do that? Because they want to project to their friends how clever they are.

I might be wrong there, but you can follow the line of thought and see what I mean.

You need to allow the prospect's imagination to take hold and see themselves becoming their ideal self using your product.

Like the others have mentioned, it's most likely what you're offering. There's no point in buying your product if it's available for free elsewhere.

Try adding unique products/twist to your product so 1. your product has more value and 2. there's more exclusivity to your offer.

But I wonder how profitable an "alice in wonderland book" market truly is...

I think it's a gimmick interactive thing... not just an ebook of
quotes. I could see my mom buying it for her grandkids.

I'd guess your traffic is pretty untargeted. If you developed
it further, including other classic PD works, Aesop's fables
and stuff like that... then you might have a real interesting
      product line.

But make no mistake, your buyers are mostly going to be
      grandparents.

Making this sort of thing into Aps for handheld's could be
real interesting. It's still a gift buy, all the way.

Hi guys, thank you so much for your answers!
So it seems you don't like my product. I know Alice isn't for everyone, but 56 people have bought the ebook and 52 people have bought it as a paperback. And about 250 people downloaded my free 21 Alice quotes which I use as a list building tool. And they have all loved the product, no-one has ever returned it.
Also : My book has over 1000 facebook fans!
These are probably not big numbers for you, but you have to understand it is just my first try at internet marketing.

But I think you're right - people love the quotes, but are not willing to pay for them.
Well, it's good to know, because I thought that maybe there is something wrong with the sale letter. It is very hard to portray this product as something you have to have, since it doesn't really solve any problem. It is purely for fun.
But there are 450 000 searches on google every month looking for alice in wonderland quotes!
And yes, Top 10 Quotes from Alice in Wonderland site is mine. Its purpose is to drive traffic and earn some adsense income.

The 2000+ / day traffic comes from the following according to analytics:
    (direct) / (none)
43,369 Which I don't understrand- how can I get direct traffic?????
    surf.inetglobal.com / referral
    7,541
    google / organic
    2,402
    google / cpc
    1,801
    squidoo.com / referral
    1,764
    yahoo / organic
    543
    bing / organic
    409
    clickbank.com / referral
    161
    youtube.com / referral
    146
    alice-in-wonderland-quotes.com / referral
    124

And they mostly come from America, Australia and China.

Thank you again for your input from all of you guys. I'd appreciate if someone could explain me the direct traffic mystery though!
    Cheers,
    Tuula

Tuula, I learned somewhere that unexplained direct traffic can be coming from visitors navigating your own site if you have pages that are missing your google analytics code, or have it set up incorrectly (e.g. with the wrong user account ID).

Every time a visitor navigates to a page, coming from an internal page with missing or bad analytics code, it's like they just arrived.

    Tuula,

Nice to meet a fellow QLDer...

Direct traffic is people typing in your URL directly... OR... someone who ca't be tracked for whatever reason.

    Also... track WHAT traffic converts.

Frankly, I'm surprised you've moved any copies of this... not because it's a bad product... but because I honestly didn't think there'd be ANY market for it.

But if your buyers all come from Adwords, for example... then you know what traffic converts and what doesn't.

      Hi Daniel,

      Nice to meet you.
I haven't used adwords at all, Alice in Wonderland keywords are so expensive.
I'm just thinking how can that direct traffic know my URL to type it in in the first place?? Or maybe that is just a fluke...or can it be?

Above it says "Google, CPC"... so I'd say something weird is going on with your Analytics then...

The direct traffic is untraceable. I'm not sure where it's coming from... my guess would be some kind of robot though.

I think there's a possibility of 2 problems with this...

    1) The Offer: People may not be willing to pay for this...

    2) The Traffic Source: You might be able to sell it to Alice In Wonderland freaks... maybe... it depends on where your traffic's coming from. I'd say your best bet is to place an ad on some kind of Alice in Wonderland fan site.

Dont get me wrong, I think the product is good.

But as you pointed out, this isnt something that people need. But, alas, that doesnt mean it is the end.

Just look at your product, your market and your available means of "getting it out there".

For instance, if your product is unique as it seems (cant say I have ever heard of an interactive list of quotes) then this could be ideal for a jv offer.

Go out, find all the big hitters in the "alice in wonderland" market, and ask them about their list size. Ask them how many visitors they get.

If there really is 450,000 searches for that a month then you might have a good chance at making some sales this way.

If they send out an email saying "hey, we all have a list of alice in wonderland quotes ... but take a look at this. No alice in wonderland fan should be without this interactive holy grail of quotes"

Pitch the "interactive", make it as awesome as possible.

It may not be something that the average person would need, but make the average "alice in wonderland" fan not only want it - but need it.

Dont assume that because it isnt a "problem" at first ... that you cant make it one! Just convince your prospect that if they dont have this ... then they are missing out. That they arent really alice in wonderland fans. Make it "hurt" as much as possible.

Good luck! You already got the product and the sales page, dont throw in the towel yet, just contact some alice in wonderland site owners - you never know what it might lead to. If then you find out it still isnt cutting it, either move on to another product or try a different method to sell it.

I checked your site, you do have great traffic.
Good url choice, nice website. Here is where to find your answer. Go to Alexa.com that will show you where you traffic is coming from. Croatia is one of the biggest -- do they have money? I do not see USA traffic.

To sell your product, you need English speaking people with money.

What is really lacking is this. A copywriter must be creative. A copywriter is not a person that copies writing.

Give you creative interpretations of Alice in 2010.

"Alice stranded in Wonderland 2010" would get my attention.

You can do the following things:
Make it a members site where they get lifetime membership for $9.95
Offer free newsletter for life. Portray your newsletter as something "special".
I do agree that your product doesn't have a hungry market but that doesn't mean that you should give up hope.

I have a weird idea. It may work. Write a short book about "Alice in Wonderland in 21st Century" (I got this idea after reading dyadvisor's post above)
Now give away that book for FREE along with your main product.

If grandparents are the real buyers, then this thing may work very well because now they have a more interesting story to tell their grandchildren. Either way, it won't hurt you at all and you can even establish yourself as a writer by doing this.

What's interesting is that, according to Google's keyword tool, there are 90,500 people searching for 'alice in wonderland quotes' every month.

What's more interesting is that 'alice in wonderland quotes' isn't a buying keyphrase.

There are so many places that people can find what you're providing for free, why would they pay money for it?

Personally, I'd suggest you do as honestbizpro suggests and add affiliate links to it, before giving it away for free. You could build a list using the book as a giveaway.

Then move on to your next project and (before you create anything) ensure that you're providing for a hungry marketplace who are looking for 'buying' keywords or phrases.

You may also want to use Quantcast to get your site quantified, so that you can see exactly who's visiting the site and target them. Info on how to do that here:
