Is There Software that Does This?

I was wondering if there's a software program out there that's kind of like a thesaurus, except it would suggest "modern" words for terms that are outdated in the language and no longer used much in everyday speech.

Anyone know of a program like that?

  • Sherice,

Can you give some examples of what you mean?

IOW -- what is something like thesaurus.com missing ?

One tool you might enjoy is visual thesaurus -- it's quite fun and can give you some interesting ideas...

    • If you're looking for a site that specialises in modern use of language, Urban Dictionary is pretty good - lose the space and add dot com at the end, and you have the url - I can't post those yet!

If nothing else, it's a bit of a laugh - but I find it fascinating to see living breathing language as it's born and adopted, only to be cast off somewhere down the line.

It's filled with reader submitted definitions - which reminds me, I haven't checked to see if 'Irwinisation' - my contribution to the dictionary, has been published yet!

Hope it's of use to you.
  • Check wordweb (.com I think), search Google; I use it for synonyms all the time - It's sweeter than pie. Get "Words That Sell" from Amazon too.

    Those two'll sort you out.
