Has anyone here taken the courses offered by AWAI?

I've been considering taking some of the copywriting courses offered by AWAI. I was wondering if anyone here has taken any of those classes. I would like to know your experience and if you'd recommend I take the class.

  • Deanna,

I have seen four of the courses and talked to a couple dozen AWAI students.

The quality and substance varies greatly, but in general there is very little interaction or feedback with a teacher/tutor/coach.

The flagship product ("Accellerated Program") by Michael Masterson is extremely good for someone who wants to know the techniques of classic direct response.

Nick Usborne's course on web site writing is very good as well.

Some of the others have no more and no less value than a $25 paperback book.

    • Hi Deanna,

I've taken a number of the AWAI courses, and recommend the following:

      • Jay White's autoresponder email course - Excellent

      • Nick Usborne's web copywriting course - Excellent

      • Pam Foster's two courses - Excellent

      • Web Copy Intensive - Superb

I returned (and got a refund) for the original AWAI email-writing course - didn't feel it was worth the cost of the course. (If you want to learn how to write powerful emails, get Jay White's excellent course instead, or the Web Copy Intensive, where Jay teaches the essentials of his course.)

      Hope this is helpful.

    • Hi Deanna,

I would save my money and exhaust
the resources on the warrior forum first.

If you've already done that, than check
out the thread titled 'Top Copywriting Books'
it's in the sticky section of the Copywriting
      Forum.

These are the books that most copywriting
courses are based off of anyway.

Now if you know for a fact that the
information in this course is unique in
some way or structured in such a way
as to make the principles more clear and
easier to absorb than by all means
      pick up the course.

But, my opinion is that your $197 could be
better spent on the material recommended
      in the above mentioned thread.

The principles outlined in these books are
tried and true and have the stamp of approval
of thousands of professional copywriters both
      on this forum and off.

I'm not speaking bad about the course offered
by AWAI, but the $197 price tag seems a bit
      high.

I just bought a copywriting package that
included over 500 copies of winning sales
letters to study at less than 5% of the cost
of the AWAI course. The article from
Eugene Swhartz alone was worth the price
of the entire package which was only $7,
      by the way.

So take a look around before buying these
medium ticket items. This way you get full
      value for your dollar.

  • I started the beginners course, AFTER reading a whole bunch of books and getting my feet wet, and after a background in sales.

Then I proceeded to laugh, and get a refund.

If you really want it, the basic course is often on eBay for under $50.

While I refused to order any other products from them after that, I will say that anything you can learn from Jay White will be well worth the money spent
  • Thank you guys so much for your honest feedback. I thought the price was kinda high!
  • I guess a trip to the library is in order.
