Is Red Good As A Background Color For A Sales letter

There is a sales page am creating for someone and his copywriter adviced him to use red as a background color for the sales page since it's a gambling product (roulette game to be precise).
My question is; The red seems to grab attention in the eyes but I have never seen a sales page that has a red background. Should I use the red as the background color or blue?
Roulette game has both red and black color. So which one should I use?

The only way to know is to test a red background against the other colors.

As Ross said, the only answer is to test ... which can easily be done with Google Website Optimizer http://www.google.com/websiteoptimizer.

However, the copywriter might be basing this on past testing he's done and so red is his best guess (it's still a guess because every product may produce different test results).

On the other hand, this could just be a random guess based on just an opinion of what looks best. If this is the case, you might go back to the client and copywriter and ask if you can set-up a website optimizer test.

Red is not a background color. A background color
is suppose to remain in the background and not compete
with the foreground text. I'll be surprised if this
background wins over, say, navy blue or black.

Red is a little intense and won't appeal to most people who are use to looking at white backgrounds. Red will put a lot of people out of there comfort zone. It will get their attention, but the might decide they just can't read it.

I would just go with a white background to be honest... although blue is good it might not look right with your offer.

Red will definitely be a distraction... and probably hurt conversions

Yes, like jbode, I'd go with a white background --
you don't want to distract the reader from the
message (found mainly in the words).

White is good as a background, but it's kinda boring. You can use attractive colors like apple green or light green. It's cool in the eyes and will create a clean appearance.
