I'd vote for number 2. And a write-in vote for number 2 minus the "building solid authority".

    Best of luck! - Russ

I'm getting tired of the long headlines of the IM niche.

I don't think either one is better. I view them as equally
      unlikely to succeed.

Here's a story of a great salesman, an auctioneer who
was charged with disposing of an entire brewery -
here is how he framed it:

"We are not here to sell a parcel of boilers and vats, but the potentiality of growing rich beyond the dreams of avarice" -- Dr. Samuel Johnson

Don't miss the point. Your prospects want traffic and links,
      why?

Maybe not to be wealthy but definitely to make money and
probably to enjoy a cushy life eventually.

They gave the examples found in Which Headline Pulled Best? to a batch of gurus. As I hear the story, the gurus scored right 50% of the time.

So, to hire the best headline picker in the business, I'd charge you $200 and for that small price you get a shiny new quarter to flip.

And finally, I'd be wary of headline A vs B when it could be headline C, D, E or F.

    Hello Loren,

You say tired of long headlines? But how else can you get the point accross?

I mean my service helps them to get more traffic, more one way links and helps build authority in their niche..

You don't need MORE words; you need the RIGHT words.

In both your headlines, you've described the features of your offer (i.e. what it does). So I get more traffic? What does that mean to me? (yeah, Head #2 is slightly better, but it ain't soaring out of the ball park, either)

Here's the thing: I don't care about the features (and neither do most prospects). I care about the benefits.

What are benefits I'll get from your offer? What's the solution you're offering to my problem? Why should I care about what you're about to tell me?

Once you give me benefits I care about, I'll want to know how you're going to deliver those benefits. That's when you can tell me about your features.

Otherwise - seriously - you could distill your headline down to 3 words: "Want More Traffic?"

        Hi Dennis,

If long headlines work fro you, use them. My understanding
of the purpose of the headline is to get the prospect to
consider the offer, at the bottom. In direct mail people
read the headline - then the order form if the headline
induces "me centered"' curiosity. If the offer appears
valuable, safe, and exciting the prospect will explore the
rest of the copy. I picked this stuff up by reading a lot
        of books.

Too many headlines try to explain it all in one spot - when
all you really need is to make one big, compelling promise.

Here it might be "More Traffic- guaranteed" - the rest of
the specific details stuffed into both of these headlines
are arguably just features that are best addressed in the
        body copy.

        Thus :

        "More Traffic - Guaranteed"

"You've got a great-looking website and you know that if you get enough
eyeballs on it you'll sell enough stuff to spend the rest of your life on
        easy street....

There's just one problem. You need traffic. A lot of it. And not just
chicken-scratch traffic. You need a steady supply of hits to your site
from motivated, targeted people with the money to buy your product.

That means no more backwater traffic from 3rd world countries... none
of this "Digg effect" stuff guaranteed to crash your server with an avalanche
of curiosity seekers. You need buyers... people with both the right problem
        and a credit card.

        ..."

And so on. It's all about YOU - and getting traffic from the people who
can buy and make you rich.

Much better. I didn't like #1 because it wasn't clear what the guarantee was, and I didn't like #2 because it only promises you'll get "started" - which isn't very compelling.

Results sells. I think when it comes to copywriting, what your audience is buying isn't half as important as what they can accomplish after they've bought and read it - focus your attention on that.

'Course not, Dennis. Feel free to test it if you like.

Not really as a "great headline", but more to illustrate the points that were being made to you about focusing more on the end user benefits rather than the features of the product.

In truth, it's pretty hyperbolic and fluffy, but got the point across, I guess.

      Best,

      Brian

While, honestly, neither of them make me feel like I need to keep reading (but gain, I'm a jaded so I might be more critical than others), #2 is better. Promising that something is 100% Guaranteed to work could give you legal issues later on. The last thing you need is for some jerk to demand a refund on the premise that they were only 98% successful with your plan!
