Scared To Ask For Critique

I've just created a product in a niche that is new for me - new not in a sense that I don't know the niche, but in a sense that this is my first attempt of an info product in this particular niche.

I want to ask for critique but I am scared to death!

Because of the specifics of this product (being that it's my first baby in this niche) I am super sensitive about it...

I want constructive critique, but I am afraid I will likely get mean critique such as 'your sales page sucks,' 'do yourself a favor and hire someone', 're-write your s.p.' etc.

I wonder how others react when they ask for critique and get trashed....

That's understandable. We all get super
    protective over our work.

Having written how you feel, I'm sure everyone will
go easy on you. And only offer constructive
    comments about your piece.

So why not go ahead and post the url...

    cheers

If you want to survive in the business world your going to have to grow thicker skin. Its a jungle and if your not a tiger you will get eaten. Its not a place for people who are easily intimidate or walk around scared of other people.

Get some attitude and stop being afraid. Either get in the ring and fight or stay out.

Read the book winning through intimidation, its recommended by pretty much anyone who actually reads it. Itll open your eyes and smarten you up a bit. Now either go kick some ass or go flip burgers for $8 an hour.

There is no critique so brutal as that of the marketplace!

Remember, we all want you to succeed with your product...
But tip-toeing around fragile egos rarely results in the most
    revealing or useful critiques.

Hiring a personal trainer to "take it easy on you" is not going
to get you the best physical conditioning either.

The purpose of a professional critique is not to make you feel
good, it's to make you more money!

Every copywriter undergoes the same degree of scrutiny for
their own work so don't be afraid...

The professionals here who'll offer you their VALUABLE insight
are GIVING you their stock in trade for free.

Ultimately, the goal is to help you and others reading here.

    Jump in, the water's fine... : )

      Hi activetrader,

The trick to going through the critique gauntlet is to take none of what anybody says personally.

We are not critiquing you, or your skill, we are critiquing the piece.

While our collective bedside manner may be rather blunt and to the point, the assessment is usually rather clinical. Salted only with our personalities.

And you should take no offense. You should view our comments as a show of support, that we took the time to share some of our experience, expertise and knowledge specifically for your project.

I would think anyone having access to a thousand plus years worth of real copywriting and direct response advertising experience would be elated.

None of what we write is designed to discourage you, only encourage you, and give you a better chance of reaching your goals.

I think professional copywriters are a lot less "nice" to each other than they are to "marketers"... not because of malice... but just because we expect to have our work torn apart.

Having said that... it's a critique. It will hurt. It ALWAYS hurts... but you'll be a better copywriter for the experience.

Having people tell you "you're great" feels nice... but it doesn't help you grow.

Embrace the pain... because every "bad" comment makes you a stronger marketer.

    Hi ActiveTrader,

It really comes down to a comparison of
    cost-to-benefit...

Does the cost of getting the critique
    out-weigh the benefit you'll receive
    from it.

In my opinion the benefits far out-weigh
    the costs.

If you're in this game to make money you'll
need to put aside the ego and wake up the
    entrepreneur in you.

As Brian said, we want to see you succeed.
As in any field worth learning a direct
and honest assessment of your work is
worth a thousand times more than a
pat on the back and a 'that-a-boy' (or girl
    in this instance).

While I would love to offer my help and believe
that it is a benefit to myself, as well as others,
on the forum to be able to see the piece and the
public critique, I can see why you are hesitant.

While the majority of us take pride in, and
enjoy, helping others I understand your
reserve in presenting your work as their
are some who offer their criticism as well as
a quick punch to the throat.

This is unfortunate, because it prevents some
from getting help. But, if you take the time to
read other critiques on this forum you'll see
that the vast majority here do have your
    best interest at heart.

If you're still unconvinced and feel that a
public critique would do more damage than
good, than I suggest you privately send
your piece to Brian, Rick or Mark all of which
are men who have proven themselves as
    professionals capable of providing unbiased
feedback in a manner that critiques the
    copy and not the person.

Think about it, as not doing so may be
more damaging to your situation than
    staying within your comfort zone.

Alright, I think I owe an apology to
Brian, Mark and Rick for offering their
      services without thinking.

Sorry guys, as I'm sure you know I
wasn't implying that your time and
skills are free for anyone to use,
but simply got caught up in trying
to find a satisfactory solution for
the original poster, and ended up
putting my foot in my mouth.

      It happens from time-to-time and
hope you can forgive me for making
      such a presumptuous suggestion.

Next time I promise to yank my head
out my a** to review my implications
      before posting.

      Sincerely,
Mike (The guy with the foot in his mouth)

Cool. I was feeling bad there for a minute.

After reading your post it immediately made me think
of what I had written in my post about privately
          contacting you guys.

I then, went back to read over my post again and
instantly felt like a smashed turd...

Thanks for replying. I'm glad to know it wasn't taken
          that way.

Just look through the other threads where people have asked for critiques. You're unlikely to get a flat-out nasty, mean-spirited response. Usually people here are optimists about the power of marketing. Usually, you'll see very specific suggestions about how to make things better. Even if the suggestion is made to give up, it's usually made with a sense of hopeful promise that the lessons learned might become profitable next time around.

Now you're worried about a bunch of well-meaning marketers disliking your message. Are you emotionally prepared for only 98% of your audience (if you're lucky enough for a 2% order rate) discarding and trashing it?

Remember that your own worth and dignity as a person has nothing to do with any particular business venture. As long as you're honest, ethical, and following the law, you have every right to make as many offers as you want, even if people criticize them. The only thing that really matters is whether you get enough orders to let yourself cry all the way to the bank!

I never ask for a critique on a public forum because most people don't know what they're talking about and it'll only make things worse.

However I have a small mastermind group of guys that are awesome at writing copy and we go over each other's stuff. That way you know you're getting valuable and targeted advice from the pro's.

So find someone you can chat over skype or otherwise, one person, and see what they have to say.

In principle, I agree that a public forum is not always the best place to seek expert advice, especially a general "marketing" forum full of consumers who think they're marketers...

HOWEVER - you do realize that this is specifically the COPYWRITING forum, right?

Some of the most experienced, in-demand copywriters online hang out and post here and offer our feedback to fellow Warriors freely.

I'm not taking a shot at you, I'm just pointing out that warning someone away from a critique here is MASSIVELY WASTED OPPORTUNITY.

And I wouldn't do it in a private one on one environment. That's what I'm PAID for. I do it to help fellow Warriors out and for the education of those who read the posts here. The only reason most of us agree to give away our experience this way is because it is public.

      Just sayin'

      Best,

Put it out there. You can't be overly sensitive in this business. When I got here, literally the first thing I did was put my sales page for copywriting services on the chopping block for reviews and critiques. Some of the feedback was (constructively) negative, but that's the kind that helps most.

I've always said, if there's anything good about the world, there's a critic to thank for it. Nothing improves unless problems are pointed out.
