Please Unleash Your Critique On My Sales Page

G'day Warriors,

I was hoping to get some quality feedback on my businesses sales page which has been my absolute pride and joy over the last 2 years.

I'll now give you some background info on the product and myself but if you're not interested and just wanted to see the page, the link is in my signature...

A little info on the product for you all; It is a 789 page interactive ebook which covers all things building muscle naturally, including motivation, supplements, goal setting, nutrition, exercises, workouts and much more. I'll be more than happy to go more into this if you require.

Here is some background on myself; The entire business is a one man operation, I am owner, author and run the tech support desk, you name it, I'm there for my customers (without them my business goes to sh*t)

I am a professional strength & conditioning coach who has worked around the world in this industry training both professionals and everyday clients to improve the way they look and perform.

Over the years I have developed my reputation within the industry and that eventually spread onto the internet with plenty of exposure and traffic coming from YouTube and my other training website (free content based, high SE rankings)

So in Jan '09, I took the biggest risk of my life and decided to work full time putting pen to paper on a muscle building program that I truly believe is the most effective and comprehensive on the internet.

Then it came time to make the rest of the world believe that too!

With lots of knowledge but little experience in copywriting, I decided to outsource for the first time and hire a pro to re-write my personal story for my programs pitch page. Many thousands of dollars later, this is the end result and the site has been live since April this year ('10).

So now I've decided to branch out even further and kindly ask for advice from the forum members that have taught me so much over the last year.

The website link is below in my signature, please be as critical as you like and speak your mind, any advice on how to improve the page and hopefully increase conversions will be so greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Rubes.

    Hi Rubes,

I'm afraid I'm not going to critique another pro's writing but I will offer some thoughts on your layout:

I think your header's too big, above the fold I'd want the headline and the testimonial photos.

I'd make the first batch of photos all before and afters, that way you're starting with some solid visual proof.

Lose the periods from your headline and subheads.

Consider having the final after photo of yourself showing your face.

The placement of your videos seems a bit random and you don't make enough of them.

You made no attempt to get my email address either when I was on the page or when I clicked off.

    Hope some of this helps.

      Thanks Andrew,

Some solid advice here. Really like the idea of reducing the size of the site logo, adding before pics to the top photos and adding a photo with my face to the after photos.

Not sure why you thought the placement of the videos was random, they are each corresponding to the module they are attached to, working as a visual preview for the visitor. I'm not sure if putting them elsewhere on the site would make any sense as the text would be about one thing and the video about another?

      Thanks again Andrew.

Random was the wrong word, because they are in the right place.

What I meant was they're not used to their best advantage. Unless someone's going slowly through your page they might not even realize there's video on it. Try putting the player on the page itself so it stands out more. You could even state toward the start of the letter that there's video samples further on (Open a loop with "but first..." then go into your letter)

          Andrew,

Excellent idea, I will put the actual player (or a screenshot of the player) on the page so it is more obvious.

I always wanted to put preview videos on the site because I have not seen it done within this niche before. I really want to give the customer a great insight into the program before they decide to purchase, just like you would in an offline bookstore (scan - decide - purchase)

          Cheers again.

I think your sales page is really solid but it's a little too long for me.

This is one of my favorite body building sales page: Mark's Ripped Combo - How I Got Ripped In Just 4 Weeks

It is short, looks authentic with all normal people photos and myspace/facebook style design

It may not work for your audience but maybe you can take some cue from it and apply to yours differently.

That's a terrible, dodgy, probably forced continuity offer that's being pitched.

I agree, these types of sites have painted a really poor picture on the health and fitness industry over the last 12 months!

Would anybody else like to contribute some advice on my pitch page? I'll find value out of anything at all so thanks in advance.

You have Mad testimonials.. which is a big selling point! Only thing i noticed was it makes me and other people feel better when in the guarantee you tell them how to contact you.. it makes them feel at ease that if they are not satisfied they can easily get in touch with you. It being $97 that is important in my opinion. What kind of conversion rate are you seeing and have you ever tested it against a pure Video version of your site?

Thanks, I have been fortunate enough to work with some high profile clients in the past so testimonials have come easy, in fact, I couldn't find room for all of them on the site.

I like the idea of putting 'contact information' on the guarantee and agree that this will make potential customers feel more comfortable, definitely something I'll be implementing.

Conversion rate is unreliable at the moment due to some analytics problems, I'll get that sorted soon and let you know. I have not tested against pure video, though I have seen some of my competition use this lately, but then again they have a full web development team backing them up where as my site is managed by myself, who is definitely a strength coach first, web developer second!

      Thanks again.

I like the basic look of the site. The bold black on white is very effective, just a little too big. Both your header and headlines should be reduced about 30% but be careful to keep the big, bold look.

I would turn up the lights on the header photos to show more detail. As they are now they fade into the background. You might consider a similar shot but full-face to add some personality.

I agree that it's too long. Cutting it down takes careful analysis and intimate knowledge of the contents so I can't advise on this specifically. It's just too long though.

Scanning through it, which is what many people will do, I find it a bit overwhelming and disjointed. I think this is where the comments about the before and after pictures apply. Do them all in a logical sequence rather than what appears to be segments. It should all flow from beginning to end and I don't really get that right now.

I may not be qualified to judge on this as I'm not in this niche but $97 for a digital product seems high. I can see that it includes a lot but it's still all digital. You might want to test different price points. If you get twice as many sales at $67 that's an improvement.

Another thing you might consider is a physical/digital hybrid. You could sell the physical version at $97 and the digital at $67. Just an idea.

Last but not least, get rid of the periods in your headers and subheads.

I really like the look of this, much of the copy and other elements. It's a quality image. The improvements will come in arranging the elements in an easier to follow and more coherent way.

            Reuben,
I'd agree with other comments here re Headline, testimonials and video placement.

I also felt that you missed a trick to connect with the reader earlier. Your football training story shows how you really felt about not being big enough. I'd bring that much higher up in the copy to create the 'you and me both' relationship as early as possible.

What about the ladies, perhaps they'd like their guys to have a bit more muscle. Could you encourage them to show your site to their boyfriend, brother, friend?

            Regards
            John

Thanks for this advice David, really like your point about the overall flow of the page especially when a visitor scans the site from top to bottom. I'll get to work on improving that right away.

I also plan on split testing other price points and also giving people the opportunity to trial the product first and then pay in full after 21 days, should be interesting to see if any change in conversions results from that...

Cheers again David, really appreciate it.

    Reuben,

    I agree with the above.

I also suggest reworking the bullets for each module.

e.g "Hitting head on, the 4 most growth effective anabolic hormones". What does this mean? What's the benefit to the prospect?

    Interesting page.

One comment is that I think your subheads are a little big and a little disjointed... not really built for scanners.

Try adding some video to it. These always help. Just make sure it's not over-the-top salesy. Avoid phrases like "but wait, there's more", etc. People are conditioned to hate things like that over decades. Maybe just talk about your product (quickly) and then offer to help anyone that wants it through human interaction (email or phone). Put a face to your sales pitch.

I did not read anyone's response as I wanted to see your page first.

In my opinion you should bring that testimonial form the Red Sox guy to the top.

You have some good pictures and I like the newsy way the page starts.

There is a lot of reference to Reuben, maybe too much. Perhaps if you were to focus on Reuben's system instead of Reuben.

Tony Horton has the P90X, and is doing pretty well.

To me the name 'permanent muscle' sounds like a load of poo. Muscle is not permanent so for me the product is already fighting for its life.

Put this up against P90X and there is no hope. I think that is the direct competition for this product and this sales page did nothing to make me see why I should choose this over that.

I meant my remarks with total respect to your efforts

    Hello Sir,

The first thing you can do is make your background light and suitable that can please your visitors in their first visit.

Your sales letter is good enough but too long to be read in few minutes. A new user to your site will not give his whole day to your site to gather important information as there is too much similar stuff on other sites.

Remember testimonials are the last that an intelligent person look at. First is the content and the facilities of the memberships. So focus on that first.

    Hope you will like it.

    Thanks

Your sales page was OK but it could definitely be better. There was a good handful of weak areas but I won't go into them all.

The one that does stick out though is where you stated that you were a "kid". Kids don't shop online.

Change that to a "man" and you will do a better job of connecting with you potential customers.

The first time at everything is considered practice, so for practice you did a fantastic job though.

      Hi Frank,

Great advice on changing the 'kid' reference to 'man' instead. I never noticed this when reading through the letter myself, even after doing it almost three thousand times!

Rubes... IMHO the "kid" thing works. It's part of the story... it adds character... don't change it.

The problem with asking for a critique on a public forum is there's no barrier to entry. You're mixing the guys who have a track record of writing good copy with those that don't.

Hence... I'd take all the suggestions here (including mine) with a grain of salt.

We don't know your business... and essentially we're just guessing.

It's easy to get hung up on making minute changes when you could instead be using that time far more productively.

    Hi Rubes,

Looks good enough to test as is and have Google Anaylizer run it.

Next I would have some headline samples ready to test to see if you can beat the present one.

Also test with smaller sized subheads and have fewer testomonials in each block so as the reader can see there is more to read which leads to the order button.

    O. k. here's one headlines to test and the reason why it's used.

Personal trainer to the stars, xx,xxx ordinary men and author says,

"Give Me A Puny Punk, 30 Minutes A Day, And I'll Transform Him Into A Bulging Muscle Man In Under 30 Days...Guranteed"

What we have done first is give you credibility and authority status.
Adding the exact numbers give more credence too.

This helps you make the biggest benefit, claim and promise coming up more believable.

Next, to make this claim, what might seem to be a stretch at first glance, more workable is you are telling the reader he has to get off his butt and work at it for 30 minutes a day for 30 days. You add your numbers which would make it workable.

All this so far has lead up to the big promise which you gurantee.

That's the reasoning behind the headline structure.

Once again you give authority and credibility status first.
Tell them they have to do something to get their dream outcome in x number of days.

You can use this outline to create more headlines to test.

Fire away if you have any more questions.

    All the best,
    Ewen

Digger, good job. But the Heading and sub-heads look strange. Lose the full stops in the heading for starters. And you do know that lower case reads a lot easier? See what I mean? -

I'd move that skinny guy's before and after shots to the top. And continue dropping before and afters throughout the copy - don't bunch them together. Before and Afters work really well in this niche and you have some beauties. In fact on your header I'd have your before shot looking across to the new you on the right.

Copy is a bit long. Test it. That's the only way to know what's gonna convert.

BTW I'm on High Speed Broadband in Gay Paree and the page was very slow to load - tried it half a dozen times.

If you want to increase the value of your product, consider putting it into a hard format such as DVD. There is a service called Kunaki or something and they do this sorta stuff for reasonably cheap.

I agree with other posters that the design is quite unique - I like it very much.

Hi Dean, thanks for that mate, I have been toying with the idea of combining a physical product with the current virtual product I am offering, it's amazing how simple companies like the one you mentioned are making it these days also, I checked out their site and was very surprised so it's definitely something I'm going to consider.

      Thanks again, much appreciated.

Rubes, regarding the loading of the page. I ran you through http://www.lightspeednow.com (out of California) and it says this -

Hi, I took a look at your site and I thought to myself the site looks good aesthetically. I like the black and white theme. It's macho, clean and crisp. However, as I looked on, I noticed that your sales pitch was kind of long. In my opinion it comes across as a little desperate. Although, I can say you are on the right track already, having a clean layout and all, I believe that you will do better by coming across as an expert who people seek out, rather than a salesman who is aggressively pitching his product.

You can do this by being more subtle with your sales pitch. What I can suggest is that you tapper it. The testimonies are great, but they would look better if they were typed in by your own clients. So I suggest you host a forum on your site, where clients or users get to review your products in real time as well as exchange some personal techniques in getting a buff body.

Also, I noticed your pitch about your youtube videos, I think it would be to your best interest to link the videos to your site. This way, you won't have to tell visitors how many times you have been thanked, but they will be able to see for themselves. Another side effect of the YouTube video links would be like a free sample, prospective clients who may still be thinking twice, can take your advice and lessons for a test ride, and when they see results, out goes the doubt, and in comes the profit.

Another way to do this might be to have fresh articles written daily, contributed or written by you to the site, this way it won't come across as purely a marketing site but as a site existing to help people be fit. This kind of "goodwill" will take your business a long way although it might not immediately translate to profits.

Infact goodwill has so much value, that when corporations are sold, the goodwill that the company has acquired over the years is computed together with physical assets to determine the overall value of a company.

Lastly, you mentioned that you include supplements in your e-book. Why don't you try to contact some of the companies that offer the kind of supplements that you recommend and ask them if they would be interested to advertise on your site. This can generate you a considerate amount of passive income.

I hope I was able to help.

    Best,
    Bob
