Here's a great edition of the Gary Halbert Letter I stumbled across the other day... thought I'd post it. It's called "Why I Am The Best Copywriter Alive (I'm Even Better Than The Ones Who Are Dead)!"

Ahhh the issue that made it clear the offer is more important than the copy itself (to me anyhow)...a great read.

I like how he gets into the details of how he constructs his offers.

If you ever read John Carlton, he talks about how Gary Halbert used to do a lot of "Looping" and agonizing over offers when they worked together.

      Pretty cool.

...With the Visa/Mastercard crackdown, it would be hard to apply this online... you know, like the "pay nothing now and you'll be charged in 30 days" sorta thing.

Still, made me think about a thing or two that I could be doing.

I remember that story (from John's blog I think).

        begin short, butchered version/

Where someone was invited over to Gary's house (can't remember who), John was there, and Gary started his infamous "looping" (saying the same things he said like an hour prior)...John had to explain to the visitor why Gary was doing that (Gary was assembling and peeling away the offer in his head over and over again in a "loop").

/end butchered version of the story

It would have been cool to be a fly on the wall.

Its amazing how one person can be so good at something. I have learned more from that site than any copywriting course I have bought. I am truly grateful.

Most sales letters - or any type of writing - I skim looking for something interesting, but his I get sucked into. Like that letter, I was really tired, thought I would just have a quick peek to see what the letter was about, yet as soon as I read the first line I knew I would read the rest.

    Thanks for posting

    Ashley

I don't think there's a copywriter alive who wouldn't be well served by reading that article (and dozens of others in Gary's newsletter) 10x or more...

Hands down the best free copywriting/marketing resource on the internet.

Gary will be missed. But I hope his legacy lives for a long time to come with the Halbert Letters.

      How true.

Gary Halbert has a deep profound impact
on my thinking towards direct response marketing.

His newsletter archive contains a real goldmine
      of ultra-valuable information.

Reading his letters gave me a glimpse of how
brilliant of him as not just a copywriter...
but also as a person. A person of such magnetic
personality and also compassion which he reveals
      at times.

All in all...Gary Halbert is just a phenomenal guy and
      will truly be missed.

Just the online "cover letter" at The Gary Halbert Letter alone provides a lesson in and of itself (I love the line "I have no idea how you got to this website.").

You're absolutely right Scott, any copywriter should refer back to that site and all the newsletters on it.

      Scott,

Fortunately for us all, Gary's legacy and the letters are in the loving and steady hands of Kevin and Bond. Those guys would never take away the resource, and have very big plans for perpetuating their dad's teachings in profound ways.

This was the most important part of that whole page for me:

"One thing -- it's an awful green color (but you could have it painted)."

Most people would only take it halfway and only cut the price in half... a $14,000 car for $7,000? My first thought is, what's wrong with it?

He justified it... runs great but ugly green color.

Justify the price drop. Ten years ago I used to try to sell $8/month web hosting (this was when everyone else only went down to $20/month and you had to pay for every extra domain, subdomain, FTP account, email account) and it didn't sell because everyone assumed lower price = worse quality.

These letters are blowing my mind and giving me so many ideas right now. I have read one or two before but I am now taking a closer look at them all and they are amazing.

One thing I'm wondering though is they seem out of order or sometimes reference "the next issue" but the next link on the site isn't the right newsletter.

I realize these are old newsletters, but is the online collection incomplete or is there a way to know the correct order?

He was truly amazing at his craft.

The headline is kind of ironic, given the fact that he is, in fact, deceased.

I learned two things from the great Gary Halbert...
    1. The offer is the deal maker or the deal breaker
    2. Headlines always come second to the offer.

If you write copy then you must read Jason Parker’s succinct “21 Web Copywriting Tricks”. You may have heard some or all of these at one time or another, but it’s everything you need in one short, must read, dissertation on the art of copywriting. This should be required reading everytime you sit down to write copy. Good work!

But to Jason Parker, thanks for the link to Gary Halberts letter, but can you please post the link to his 2nd continued version of the letter, where he is said to summarize all 3 of his sales tactics into the conclusion, in the next month's issue? Would you have a ready link to that, please?

        Thanks,
