Pre Sell - Technique advice needed please!

Hi everyone,

Although I don't consider myself to be a BAD writer; I seem to be failing miserably at pre-selling any affiliate offers..

I have managed to get a small but decent amount of traffic to my site but have yet to convert anything

What am I missing in the pre sale technique?
Any guides you recommend?

Thanks for any feedback, I really appreciate it!

Just browsing here, but I wish that I could write copy.

You mention - affiliate offers.. and then later - I have managed to get a small but decent amount of traffic to my site.

Are you using one website to promote a multitude of offers? If so, then you are bound to fail. Focus one site to one offer period. Have no other distractions on that particular dedicated site.

If you're a writer, then if I were you, I'd focus on giving away something of quality to build a mailing list and then use your writing skills to market to your list.

Sorry if I've misunderstood your predicament and heck, with my writing skills I shouldn't even be on this part of the forum!

    Best of luck,

    Jeff.

    Angelita (Nice name, btw),

How about sharing some of your sites so we can help you see what you can improve? If it's not working for you, chances are slim someone's going to copy it it anyway :-)

LOL Dan! I'd love to pass you my site address but I don't have access to send you a PM...

Hi Jeff, thanks so much for your feedback! I think you are onto something. I have a site with several offers.

... Is it not ok to have a content site with several offers? So I should choose 1 to promote?

Angelita, if you can't post it here, you can feel free to email it to me at dan (at) realsalescopy (dot) com.

Multiple offers aren't bad at all, though you have to do it right. I used to be an affiliate manager for several companies and I saw many huge affiliates bringing in six figure incomes with having multiple offers on a page.

Awww, nuts. I'm in the process of creating a product called Presell Mastery which reveals ALL... I'm even surprising myself at just how much is involved in skilful preselling.

Question for you... how are you CURRENTLY preselling? Do you get the traffic, write up a review of the product, and send them on their way via an affiliate link?

If so, I can imagine why you're struggling. Let me know and I'll share a couple of ideas with you. I'll probably be putting together a free email course soon, on preselling. Naturally it will be preselling my main product ... but I'll be sharing plenty of valuable information for free.

Angelita, based upon my experience, try this on:

Treat your pre-sell page like an over-sized PPC ad.

What do I mean by that?

The keywords the prospects enter (and you're ranking for) *AND* the pre-sell page must be RELEVANT.

Targeted. Specific. Inextricably linked to each other.

From there, you want to get them to click on the link associated with the offer. The easiest way to do that is a "rave review" format. However there are other formats that are just as viable, like a video testimonial or a comparison chart.

My guess is you are too "generic" in your presell page and the prospect bounces.

Most presell pages I critique try to re-sell the prospect on the same benefits and such as the sales letter. Same ideas, different words.

Just target and write for the keyword or the keyword group.

        Hey Angelita,

An affiliate marketer on the main forum today said how
he quadrupled his profits by making one simple change.

He added a lower priced alternative.

Before he only had one product to sell.

Here is the real reason it works so well...

...one product offer buyers decision is a yes or no.

The two product offer decision is "which one?"

And here is the surprising thing, more of the highest priced item was sold.

The next step in ramping the profits up is to add a third, higher price item.

This is done to sell more of the middle priced item.

It is an old trick some switched on retail stores use.

Here is how he approached it... he explained the benefits
and the one negative of the his high priced item.

That negative was the price in comparison to the other.

The negative for the lower priced item was that the results
would take longer to show up.

That was his blueprint which got him 4x profit.

More profits are waiting by adding the third product and use
        the same approach.

The sweet spot seems to be the 3 option plan.

Also you should be targeting those that are ready to buy.

        All the best,
        Ewen

      Hi Paul,
I've tried a few different methods - reviews, email followups, recommendations, and comparisons

The funny thing is that according to CB stats - I've had over 300 clicks into my affiliate sales pages - no purchases? .... These CB products are converting (for others I suppose) according to the gravity .. on average of 70.

So, I am left to believe that I failed to pre-sell? ... Also, I would like to see a much higher rate clicking into my affiliate links.

If you want a review of your Presell Mastery when it's ready, let me know please!!.. Feel free to PM me if you want to chat.

ewenmack - Thank you for your insight, I like that

RickDuris - That's interesting, thank you.. I actually have been getting traffic from google for terms I didn't aim for - so perhaps I should review my content to target the search terms..

You said "Most presell pages I critique try to re-sell the prospect on the same benefits and such as the sales letter. Same ideas, different words."

Did you mean to do this? Or not to do it?

300 clicks isn't enough to make a judgment.

First of all - how many of them clicked through to your various offers? And how many clicks did each offer receive?

If you don't know, that's something you need to track.

Let's say, for example, 20% of your viewers clicked through. That's 60 clicks to an affiliate offer. Most pages don't convert as well as 1:60 (depending on a lot of variables).

Basically, you're jumping the gun. With 300 visitors you have no idea if it does or doesn't work yet. 2000 would be a good number.

I'll let you know when I have something ready. I'm still typing away furiously at the moment.

The thing about true PRESELLING is its about relationships and trust.

        Think about it.

Are you more likely to buy a product recommended by some random guy or girl off the street, or your best friend and someone who cares about you?

Let's say you're thinking of buying "The Secrets Of Widget Warbling", a product I just made up (available now for just $39.95).

You might go to Google and type in secrets of widget warbling review. First of all, what tends to happen is that 7 or 8 of the results often end up saying something similar in their reviews, because they've used a review template from the product creator...

... but when everyone does it, it just looks silly. 7-8 reviews on the first page of Google all saying the same thing doesn't create TRUST... or even CREDIBILITY... in your mind, does it?

Depending on how savvy you are, you'll either realize (a) aha... they've copied and pasted the product creator's own review, or (b) they've copied one another. Either way, not good.

So you first of all need to create trust by differentiating yourself from the other reviews. Yes, you can use the product creator's template if they've supplied one... but it should be viewed AS A TEMPLATE, not something you use word for word.

Second, what you're also looking for when you typed in secrets of widget warbling review is EXPERIENCE... you're looking for others who have used the product, and got results. You want confidence that it's OK to buy, and that you're not just wasting your money.

So is there anything YOU can provide your visitor, that the others aren't providing? For example, screenshots from the product, a rundown on a particular couple of features. One affiliate I know has written an entire report, where he goes inside the product and shows exactly how it works.

Preselling isn't just about 300-500 word reviews. Sure, that's a small part of it. But you'll only ever have limited success with that route, especially since everyone else is doing it, and more often than not, using the exact wording provided by the product creator... not a good idea for product reviews when every affiliate is doing that!

What I'm saying here is really just the "tip of the iceberg" for preselling, but I hope what I've posted here will get you thinking about different ways you can presell your visitors.

    Sorry if I wasn't clear:

I've had decent traffic to the site / 300 AFFILIATE link clicks
    No sales

I just mean copy that's been used to pre-sell it by the owner of the product and it's tested.

If you're an email marketer, you can just copy and paste and make a few of your own changes.

For a review page, I'd probably use the same or similar copy.

for my stuff, the presell page shows some type of proof, then teases the reader with curiosity and gets them to click.

Thats the only purpose of that page... to get them to click.

Start with the end in mind. Whats your desired result?

Then figure out how you would need to get someone to do that.

What would make YOU do that?

And then setup a few different ideas and TEST.

      Great advice Dave, thank you!

Quick question? In general, how long should a presell be?

      350-500 words?

      ...

Thanks again everyone, you've all been so helpful!
