What are some of your favourite websites for finding copywriters? I am familiar with GetaCoder, Guru, Odesk, and Elance. What websites do you recommend? Thank you.

    Hi Laura,

For finding a copywriter or to advertise your copywriting services
it can be found right here on this forum.

    http://www.warriorforum.com/copywrit...directory.html

    All the best,
    Ewen

P.S. Just so there is no confusion, a copywriter is there to sell...
...while a writer is there to inform and entertain.

Those websites are great for building your first samples.

And once you've got 'em run. Get outta there.

Most of the projects pay way to low. Check out hotshots like Bly, Healy, Settle... and the big paydays they get, all away from elance type.

    Soldier on.

hmmm...I have been thinking the same thing Laura.

Apart from advertising on places like LinkedIn and this forum, I am wondering where you can advertise your services that will pay really well. In particular, if you want to do direct response (I am interested in the health niche) how do you go about advertising your services to them?

From what I have heard, these guys are really tough to get into and get yourself known. I suppose this is something that the more highly paid copywriters on this forum may know the answer to - anyone want to spill the beans?

Arfa, the link I'm providing shows how one of the best copywriters in the alternative health biz writes promotions.

In particular where the research comes from and what to do with it.

He then shows you the winning piece.

If you follow the same steps, you can then see where other promos are weak and write out an alternative for practice.

This builds your confidence, then you can start calling the markerters who you know can help. These are the big ones you mentioned.

        No need to feel intimadated.

I found a weak structure in a Agora mailing piece which was meant to be their control piece. Will I mention it to them...? Yes!

It's just a matter of recognizing weak and strong points right down to the last word.

            What, you want more...?

            Oh, allright then.

You might like this lady as much as I did after she dined me.

            A List copywriter Carline Anglade-Cole.

Not only was she mentored by Clayton Makepeace, she use to work for what was known as Phillips Publishing, now known as Healthy Directions.

This means she knows how the business works that you are wanting to get in, from both sides.

And the good news for you, is she specializes in the alternative health field, writing for some of the biggest direct mailers with lots of controls to her name.

She has an ezine she sends out for help, she has past editions on her website, she has samples of the kick-butt controls on her website.

Since you have liked where I've sent you last time, then you will love it on the otherside of this click too.

I agree with Wally on this one. Elance, Odesk, etc. are good places to find new(er) copywriters that are still trying to establish a reputation and portfolio.

Once copywriters have developed any type of successful track record and can command higher fees, they raise their rates and go away from the price-driven outsourcing sites where they have to do high volume copywriting each month to make an income.

As for where I advertise... I pretty much don't. I occasionally use PPC but most of the time, my marketing and networking produce enough quality leads that I don't have to run ads. My copywriting website works quite well for promoting my services as well.

Laura, if you're looking to hire a copywriter, then it's worth your time to start a thread in this subforum and ask for a copywriter for your type of product, niche, and needed deadline.

I suggest you read this sticky first... Daniel Scott's post (#3 in thread) will be helpful in posting your request for maximum results.

I'd also look through the copywriting directory that Ewen pointed out to you as there's a lot of solid copywriters listed there.

    Hope that helps,

    Mike

A quick observation regarding some of the sites mentioned above. I used to find that work providers who advertised for writers independently required potential candidates to register with Elance before they could be considered for work.

Quite simply, don't do it. If a work provider wants to drag you into a bidding war in an attempt to lower their costs, they're not worth dealing with anyway. I've found that it can help to contact these providers and explain that you work as a professional and as an individual. Explain that your talents no longer warrant registration to other websites and that you'd be happy to complete work for them on a seperate basis instead.

If they're worth their salt, they'll consider your demands. If they insist on putting you up against dozen of other desperate writers to minimalise your potential income, go find better work elsewhere.

I think I threw up a little reading the OP.

No self-respecting copywriter is on ANY of the sites mentioned in the OP.

        Clickbank anyone?

Or rather should I say, "Affiliate Marketing anyone?" as the following method will work for more than just Clickbank.

        1. Find a product in the industry you are looking to write for, especially one with a decent product but a lousy sales letter. (i.e. Look for the products that aren't doing so well as you will have a lot less competition, and it should be relatively easy for you to stand out from amongst them.)

        2. Sign up as an affiliate for that product.

        3. Write a better sales letter than the one they currently use.

        4. Link directly to the order page.

        5. Post your sales letter to the web. (You can use your own site, or something like blogger, wordpress, or squidoo, etc.)

        6. Send traffic to your page. (There are a lot of good tips in this forum on how to do that for free.)

        7. When the owners of that product see the jump in their sales, they will most likely contact you directly to find out what you did & how you did it. When they do contact you, then you can negotiate with them to have your sales letter become their new control. You can ask for an up front fee as well as a percentage of ongoing sales.

The beauty of this method is that it is a way for you to cut your teeth so to speak in ways that aren't really visible to anyone else until you become good. Then you get very visible.

Plus, you get paid the commissions on any sales made as you are developing your skills.

In addition, you don't have to actually deal with any clients, and so don't have the headaches associated with that. Rather, you'd still have the freedom to write anything and any way you want. Plus, you can test and tweak your copy however you want without having to get approval from your client, until they adopt your letter as their control.

I'm sure other copywriters here can give you lots of horror stories about dealing with stupid or otherwise difficult clients who wouldn't let them even test things the copywriter KNEW would work much better than the stuff they were stuck with.

Also, you can repeat this process as often as you want, with as many different products as you want.

Then, once you do get good, you will have a stack of controls, and the stats to prove it, and at that point you can ask whatever you want. The bigger clients will start to see your style and handiwork as having written the sales letters for some of the best selling Clickbank products in your industry, and they will most likely come looking for you rather than you having to chase them.

        I hope this helps.

BTW: Clickbank and its competitors would be a good place to find good copywriters to hire as well, just find the top converting products in your industry and contact the owners to see if they'll tell you who wrote the copy for their sales letter. They may not want to tell you, but if they do, then you can see about hiring them. These folks may not be the cheapest up front, but you would at least know that their stuff actually sells, and so they should be able to pay for themselves rather quickly.
