Legal advice needed

I wasn't sure if I should post this question in the main forum or not. Since it pertains to copywrite, I thought I would start here.

I'm in the process of developing an ebook that pertains to theatre. In it I'm taking small excerpts from plays that have been published. In all cases its 1-2 paragraphs & I'm crediting the play & author. Can I get in trouble for this? I was looking at the "Fair Use" part of US copywrite law & it's a bit confusing. According to my research under "Fair Use" the substantiality of the copying is more important then the length.

Also some of the plays are several hundred years old so they would be in public domain. Would it be ok to use these?

Can anyone advise? I don't want to get sued down the road!

    Copyright: The set of exclusive rights granted to the author or creator of an original work, including the right to copy, distribute and adapt the work. These rights can be licensed, transferred and/or assigned.
    This is a copywriting forum. It's a pretty common mistake though.

    Also, my advice would be to not ask for legal advice on a public forum. You run just as much of a chance of getting bad information as you do getting your question answered.
