Experience with translation

Hi,

This is one of the first posts I've made at WF, I'm just trying to gauge current levels of interest in professional language services here (ie. your copy will actually read like it was written natively, not mangled by automatic translation).

Do IM folks create niche sites, build lists, sell affiliate products etc. only in English? Has anyone here any experience of replicating their efforts in other languages?

It struck me as something obvious to do, provided that the product was available in the target language, and if it wasn't - to produce it. Re-investing a small amount in translation seems like a clear way to break out of saturated markets. Maybe I'm missing something as to why people aren't doing it?

  • You know that's an interesting post you have put up there.
I actually do translation into Thai for a local government in central Thailand and although I have taken a quite a lot of Thai translation jobs on the net, only a few have been for websites.
I know when I finally finish my website I'll be putting it up for the Thai market too.
I guess some people will have a problem if they get a question in Spanish and can't even read it as they have outsourced the work!!
Anyway, good to know I'm not the only one thinking this.
    Kind regards
    Barry

  • Barry,

Thanks for your thoughts. Just like your translations into Thai (is Barry a common Thai name?*) I've translated no end of websites, training manuals, brochures, even comic books for new target markets.

Receiving an email in a foreign language would easily be handled by a language company (such as my own!), even translating your reply if required.

I would be interested in hearing any case studies or experiences WF members have had.

    Cheers,
    Luke

  • Hi Barry!
Actually, I work as a Russian copywriter, but I also tried my luck here, trying to sell my translation abilities. At this stage I want to find stuff to make translation not only into Russian, but into the other languages. That's a difficult lot, must say.
