Social proof...'As Seen On'... someone pls explain this.

I'm seeing a lot of sales pages that have this in the header:

I understand why it's important, but my initial reaction is c'mon... As seen on Google, Yahoo, ClickBank, YouTube, AOL?

Why not also add logos for: iPhone, Android, Verizon, AT&T... hell GoDaddy, Warrior Forum... etc.

Nothing unethical or 'infringing' to do that, right?

Seriously, am I overthinking this?

I've never tested it but I suspect it works for some. My reaction is the same as yours. Its idiotic.

well it's idiotic because one would expect to see an internet marketing product on the biggest search, content networks by default, since they are crawled daily lol. .if it was an IM product.

Why not also add logos for: iPhone, Android, Verizon, AT&T... hell GoDaddy, Warrior Forum... etc.

this ^ would be more powerful, I would imagine.

    Yes.

Remember, it's not what you as a copywriter think. It's what the prospect in a given niche thinks.

"No one in this world, so far as I know--and I have searched the record for years, and employed agents to help me--has ever lost money by underestimating the intelligence of the great masses of the plain people."

To me - it's downright silly.

But I don't know. Maybe it helps conversion.

I have never used it on my own sales pages.
So I can't say for sure.

Of course it is silly. But the simple point is to suggest a connection with, even an endorsement by, these major reputable companies.

Some people might not know that getting to the first page of google has nothing to do with an endorsement by google.

Being in the sports training niche I see almost everyone else in my market using banners on their sales page that say: as seen on ESPN, Mens Health, CBS Sports etc...

None of them have ever been featured in any of these places so I always wondered if this was illegal and they could get in trouble for doing this.

    What do you guys think?

Can there be any serious consequences if you lie about being featured in a popular tv station, magazine, etc... ?

Not sure of the legal issues youngmoney, but it's dishonest and shows what kind of business they really are if they say something and it's false. There is a lot of fraud out there and ruins it for the honest and value providing people out there.

If you haven't been in places you want yet, then wait to you are and then add it to your site or wherever using it.

Must work as a lot of people use it. Personally I ignore it.

I'll be sure to record myself using a product, burn it to DVD and play it on my television.

    Viola...

Seeing all those familiar logos just makes the brain feel a little bit safer and makes it a little more likely to tell the hand to pull the credit card out of the wallet. Brains are silly like that.

It adds mass credibility. Credibility by numbers. 10,000,000 people jumped off a bridge - and 10,000,000 people can't be wrong.

Its so idiotic. I can't believe anyone would actually use such a pathetic tactic like that. If you've actually got something to brag about like "As seen on Fox News, CNBC" or valid media publications, then by all means show it off. Even if it works, I wouldn't be caught dead using that tactic - regardless of how much it may boost conversions.

It's simply a ploy out of desperation for credibility.

    When they have none.

It's in the same category as pictures of people wearing lab coats in nutritional supplement ads.

Part of it is also that the prospect think to himself, "If it has been all over google and facebook, it must be really popular....and it is is really popular, that means it is a good offer!"

I'm going to test a sales page that leads off with

As seen on: the internet, stupid
    Who knows? It may convert.

I am a purist musician at heart, but crappy "bubble gum" ones get record deals everyday... i used to be more commercial and had a management and publishing deal... I would watch all the purist at the songwriters clubs ordering "water" talking about what sellouts the commercial musicians were, who were all buying $8.00 drinks and actually had gas in their tank... The purists then appeared to me as a proud but BROKE crowd lol...

Being a purist is good... depends how much you like money I guess. Fact is ; people are psychologically moved by stuff like this.

While marketers and copywriters "think" and make up
their own mind whether it is the right or wrong move...

...the smartest of them all will put their judgement aside and test
      to see what actually works.

      All the best,

as seen on :the internet, compadre

that way there they don't have an identity crisis or anything.

Have heard from those who have used it on their pages that it decreased conversions. Likely as most people outside of IM have never even heard of Clickbank, Ezine Articles and squidoo etc. so they perceive it as BS which it is.

Then of course there are the potential legal ramifications.

The example you've shown is plain idiotic yes - however I'll hold that one back, because without testing the effectiveness of this banner, I can't judge - and appearances can be massively deceiving. There have been times when I've tweaked variables, but thought of my idea perhaps not working because it is too out-of-the-box, only to find it had a massive impact - testing, tweaking, testing, is the only way to be sure.

My intuition tells me that the banner you demonstrated, is silly yes. However a banner boasting names like CNN, BBC, "ON TV" etc. I believe will have great effect.
