I've got a new guest post for John Carlton over
at his blog today...

The Marketing Rebel RANT - The Official Blog of John Carlton

It's always a big honor to sit in for John. He
very rarely invites guests, so I'm humbled to be
logging a record 4th post for him today and
I believe this one will help a lot of Warriors looking
for the secrets to success as a freelancer.

People often ask how I managed to go from just
another copywriter trying to scrounge up enough
work to finally quit my hell job...

... to being John's most trusted go-to writer on
his own projects in such a (seemingly) short time.

I was fortunate to have great mentors like Chris
Tomasulo, who first introduced me to direct
response and all the gurus who would shape my
views...

And Vin Montello, who brought my writing to a
higher level faster than I ever imagined possible
and helped me land my first clients (nothing is
possible until that happens).

Getting "in" with Carlton was another major
turning point. Check out the post to learn exactly
how I did it...

... and pick up a few timely tips for making 2011
the year you take freelancing to the next level.

Chances are you already have the talent,
now you just need the plan.

I'd love to hear from you in the comments
section, too.

Best,
Kevin

P.S. I'm also planning to record a call with John
on Wednesday. If you have a burning question for
him, please post it in this thread, and include your
real name so I can ask it on your behalf. Thanks!

  • I thoroughly enjoyed reading that post, cheers Kevin...

Now, to find someone to model!

The more I learn about copywriting the more fascinating it gets.

    • Thanks, Paj. Yeah, man... boredom is not a hazard on this job.

      Good luck in your search.

  • This presupposes that John visits here?

    Hi John!

P.S. I enjoyed your article and was a nice contrast between where John left off and you picked up.

    • Hey Ross, he does on occasion, but this was back when Michel Fortin had the Copywriters Board.

      Best,

Dunno about Carlton's site but there's some invaluable stuff on Kevin and his mate's site. But keep it to yourself will you. Can't have civilians playing with this dynamite - it might blow up in their faces.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks

    • Dunno about those American lads...there's an Aussie in gay Pari
who has got some noise going himself.

He's discovered a weird way to use scarcity.

That ol' grumpy Dan Kennedy has now used it
to get an immediate jump in sales by only using
this weird trick where sales had stalled.

Shame on him from hiding this from me...

  • Great post!

I've started studying copywriting lately, and there's just so much to learn, but it's addictive.

There's something about the psychology and being able to impact people with your words alone that keeps me hooked.

    • Thanks Henri,

Yeah, persuasion is the drug. Once you've got the foundation of effective copy nailed, injecting new psych triggers makes it REAL fun.

      Good luck with everything.

  • The title of this thread is a nice headline, if I ever read one.
