Just saw this and it reminded me how powerful good copy can be, even in it's simplest form.

While I love the point that words are very powerful, I have several blind friends who (gasp) actually work for a living and are doing very well. So part of that video could well be sending out an inappropriate message.

Agree Marvin - not all blind people are beggars and not all beggars are blind. This particular man is blind.

I think it was the point about the correct use of words rather than the sentiment that the company is trying to get across.

Good point ... I realize the use of words was supposed to be the main theme. Playing with emotions almost always seems to work towards reducing any thinking about other messages that might come across though.

As I was thinking about the video, I don't think the message would have been nearly as effective without the choice of music that was used ... and the context that the video put things.

An interesting book covering PR and spin ... i.e. copywriting ... is Propaganda by Edward Bernays. It was written in 1928, and might be in the public domain (didn't check.) Reading this book is part of what raised my awareness of other messages within that video.

"THE conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country."

      The full text is at:

      Propaganda by Edward Bernays (1928)

Note that some of the words (including propaganda) had a somewhat different meaning at the time the book was written than they do now.

...plus I was sure I recognised the location. It's Royal Exchange Square in Glasgow, just 30 miles from where I live and ironically, he's sitting at the rear steps of what was Borders book shop - now closed down, because people don't buy as many books as they used to.

I usually don't like to share this.

But back track 5 years I was homeless. 2 1/2 years I was hopping trains, getting rides, walking everywhere and back. There were so many hard times.

I refused to panhandle, if I wanted money I was going to do it the right way. But with no home address, no phone number, and no social security card it was rough. And Salvation Army housing isn't as easy to get into as you would imagine.

So I played guitar with two other people I had met on the streets. Weeks saving up and we finally got a place and eventually got a job. We have all parted ways since than but not a day goes by I do not remember those times.

And being a complete sap like I can be, this made me cry.

I wasn't really blown away by the commercial, it was more of a marketing gimmick imo then the "power of words". First the music setting the tone, then the story of a poor blind man begging for change (sympathy from the audience). An attractive women altering the blind man's money maker (probably would've got beat up if attempted in real life lol). Donations increase as do the audience's suspense and curiosity of what she wrote. "revealing the beauty we take for granted". From a marketing stand point, a product or service that triggers emotions = better product recognition = better conversion. I guess it just feels too scripted for me to appreciate it... or am i just cold hearted?!

      Indeed, powerful message.

What is the marketing moral? Perhaps it is that if you remind people of the things that move them, and then show them how that connects themselves with what you are offering, they are moved to action.

      Thanks.

Actually, the goal of the video seems to miss the mark.

Does anyone remember the name of the firm at the end? Even more important, did it lead you to go to take action?

          Better: End with:

"Visit nameofsite.com to see how this movie ends and put 11 times more donations into his tip bucket..."

          Now THAT's good marketing.

This is awesome and so true, when i went to my first copywriting seminar it cost me $997 but I made that back by fixing my sales pages up and putting better copy in there.

It is amazing the true power of words and how they stir our emotions. Simple psychology that everyone forgets about but are very powerful and can make you lots of money if you study the connection, and test.

I actually had a very different take on this video.

My thought was that if the revised message were a headline, then it would fail. Or at least not be as good as it could be.

    Why?

Because it doesn't compel people to take the specific action he wants them to take.

Telling people, "It's a beautiful day and I can't see it" will stir up a boatload of sympathy, but giving a blind guy money won't help him see the beautiful day, now will it?

So why would people who saw that sign give him money?

I guess some would because they feel sorry for him, but don't people normally make a charitable contribution to help someone solve a problem?

A message like, "I'm hungry and have no money to feed myself" would be a bit more on point, don't you think? I mean, as far as compelling the SPECIFIC ACTION of getting people to give him money.

"Oh, this poor guy hasn't eaten. Well, ****, I can part with a few dollars if it means the difference between him eating and going hungry."

Sure, it's not as sexy ... but isn't that the trap we've all been warned about in copywriting and advertising? Don't go for the award winner. Go for what WORKS. And often time what works isn't terribly innovative.

Maybe I'm wrong. I guess the only way to prove it would be to test it. And I definitely don't think that this particular piece was real, so there goes that idea.

    Interesting video nonetheless.
