Should Sales Copy Writing Include the design of the Squeeze pages

Hi Fellow Copywriters,
I have been writing copies for a number of clients but in the recent past i got a client who also requires me to do the squeeze page as well. My question is on how should i handle this since i feel i need to have some knowledge on squeeze page design since i only write persuasive content.
Anyone with suggestions?

You gotta make the customer happy.

For a squeeze page, all you need is persuasive copy, and a sign-up form.

Make sure that you remove the sidebar navigation, as well as top navigation. Don't give them any excuse to leave.

Eventually, design will occupy roughly half of any good marketer's time and testing. And for one reason only: Generally speaking, design will be responsible for half your response gains. (Depending on variables such as industry or purpose).

Eventually, it will be recognized leaving out design will mean leaving half the money you could have made on the table.

This is not that decade. In fact, most designers would have to improve a lot just to reach zero damage to results. It may be the decade design gets to zero harm to business. (That is not the way to bet, but it could happen.)

    Hi,

I usually include a number of strong suggestions as to layout for any copy. But I am not a graphic designer. So I tend to keep it basic.

It depends on your own skills. And on how willing your client would be to test various layouts/photos/etc.

Layout also depends strongly on whether you're writing for online or hard-copy reading. Many folks don't realize how very different the two writing styles should be.

Headline format? Squeeze page fonts and images? Photos to be placed where in your text? How to do text boxes?

These are all basics that you the copywriter ought to be able to address, to some degree at least.

In my experience, design is super-important for a squeeze page.

A client of mine had a squeeze page written by a top copywriter. It was doing okay... turning maybe 20% of targeted traffic into leads.

I re-wrote the squeeze AND worked closely with a designer friend of mine to get it looking slick and sexy.

The result? Conversions more than tripled.

If you don't know what you're doing, I'd advise against taking the gig. Always outsource to people who know what they're doing... it's just smart business.

Firstly well done on the result for your client mate, but I'm wondering - was it the rewritten copy you did or the new design which boosted the conversions? Did your client test them simultaneously or one after the other? Did they test the new copy with the old design, the old copy with the new design, and the new copy with the new design? Did they change both the copy and the design at the same time and started sending traffic to the page?

Both went up together. The client's a pretty sharp guy so I'm assuming he's going to split test things to see where the big winners are... but I daresay both copy and design were responsible for the increase.

If your client is using Wordpress you could plug your copy into the Optimize Press Theme and it will create the squeeze page.

The theme has quite a few template for squeeze pages, sales pages, sales funnels, etc.

It may be worth a look (even if you just model the designs).

  • Are you a designer? No? Then don't design. You should aim to keep the clients happy, but sometimes clients have unrealistic expectations. They think anyone involved in websites is a 'web guy' and can therefore do anything and everything related to building a site. We all know it's not that simple. In other words, do what you do best and outsource the rest.

I would tell the client you can set him up with a squeeze page template, using OptimizePress or David Reybould/Brian McLeod/Kevin Rogers' http://www.warriorforum.com/warrior-...fic-bonus.html, but that he may get better results by hiring someone knowledgeable to design the squeeze page. (Of course, he'll probably want you to recommend someone.)

Good copywriting is the key to selling any product. But good copywriting works best when it's supplemented with really good design. Good design gives your copy that extra edge that makes it standout and helps it give a good first impression.

There are so many others out there selling the same product and you need to have something in yours that should make people want it more. The best thing to do is find a good designer to work around your writing. A good designer would know the right design and where to put it.
