How to send a prospect to an opt-in/splash page

I know this relates more to the marketing process, but which copywriting pieces would you use to direct a prospect to an opt-in/splash page (one that offers a free-report, for example)? What's normally used for this sales funnel?

Banner ads, google adwords, etc.?

Basically, I'm not really sure what actually leads to an opt-in page.

    All of the above and more.

    First you have to identify your audience.

    Then you search for the media that gives you access to those people.

    The sources could be anything - from forum links, through radio ads, to live events.

    Quality articles. That's the whole premise behind article marketing. A compelling article with a link pointing to your lead capture page or a pre-sell page for an affiliate or exclusive offer.

    Whatever you can dream of - can point to your squeeze page. I recommend 2 things to keep in mind when selecting what to use.

    1) Make sure your chosen method is tapping into a thirsty crowd. A group of people who are known to have an existing interest in your product or things that are similar.

    What this means varies by method. For an example: In print advertising, it would mean selecting the right publications for your ad. On adwords, it means the right keywords. It will vary.

    2) Make sure that it gives them a positive expectation before viewing your squeeze page. They should'nt enter with no expectation or a bad expectation. The frame of mind they are in makes a difference.
