Would this Grab Your Attention?

I was at the Dentist last week. While waiting I looked down at the pile of magazines and saw this... I'm not a Newsweek guy, but I picked it up.
Newsweek Cover [Magazine-Agent.com] May 28, 2011

Apocalypse
Now
Tsunamis,Earthquakes,
Nuclear Meltdown.Revolutions,
Economies on the Brink,
What the#@%!Is Next?

Can you use this in your copy?

It's newsworthy and grabs your attention. But can you swipe it?

Plugs right in to the mindset of the target market, people who are constantly thinking about this stuff, watching every news program they can, sitting there waiting for the end of the world.

This is a far more valuable lesson than the words they've used. Magazine headline copywriters are well paid because they have to compete against every other magazine on the rack

Why would you want to swipe it? End of the world stuff is suddenly becoming mainstream. If you have something related to promote it's certainly easy enough to come up with an original headline of your own.

Hmmm, it sounds a little hokey for my tastes but I'm picky about where I get my news. I could see myself using this sort of tactic like this:

      "Earthquakes, tsunamis, nuclear disasters

The world is an unstable place. One thing you can count on, however, is the quality and reliability of my services. In a world full of unexpected disasters, it's comforting to know that you have a professional on call, no matter what may happen."

I would stay away from any end of the world stuff though, I think it's cheap. Unless you were selling a religious product or some sort of survivalist handbook, then I suppose that is your market.

      • You often (so I guess they must work) - see these type of headlines (or very similar ones) in Finance Newsletter copy.
