Fiction Books By Copywriters

Ted Bell and James Patterson are both former admen.

Ted Bell writes counter-terrorism style thrillers which are pretty good.

I'd recommend reading James Patterson's earlier work, especially books like Along Came A Spider, Black Market, or Kiss The Girls. In recent years, he's been churning stuff out with co-authors and it's not nearly as good. After reading over a dozen of his books, I've stopped reading Patterson for that reason.

P.S. They're not admen or copywriters but both Vince Flynn and Brad Thor write great counter-terrorism fiction (the TV show 24 was the same style) that are rich in descriptive language and create a strong visual story. I'd recommend either one of them as fun reads.

If you like non-fiction audios, get a hold of as many Drayton Bird interviews as you can. He liberally mixes in stories from his long career when he talks about copywriting and marketing.

Bill Bryson was an ad man now a prolific fiction writer.

Some of his books are...

A Short History of Nearly Everything
A Walk in the Woods
African Diary
At Home: A Short History of Private Life

I'm not a fiction reader so can't comment on his fiction.

Then there is Gordon Herschell Lewis the ad man and writer of gore movies.

Don't know the titles.

Now don't be too shocked...

But I think that old rogue Gordon Herschell Lewis - back in the 70's did what were known as "sexploitation" movies as well.

Of course I haven't watched any of them (apart from one during a stag party years ago - sadly I was a bit too drunk to pay close attention).

But I understand it featured nude ladies with large chests - cavorting on the beach playing volleyball.

Amazingly creative copywriting on film.

His fiction is brilliant. Very dry sense of humor and an excellent observer of human behavior. He'll crease you up laughing with almost every turn of the page.

A Short History of Nearly Everything is just an incredible read. From micro organisms at the microscopic subatomic level to the macroscopic size of the universe, dark matter, you name it he explains it all with excellent clarity and an insight rarely found in other writers.

Everything he writes has a real human touch to it. A very down to earth writer of superb pedigree. He's just brilliant and provides very entertaining reading material full stop. Highly recommended reading.
