Fiction Books By Copywriters

I read "God Doesn't Shoot Craps" by Richard Armstrong (an A list copywriter) a while ago.

It's a cracking read.

Does anyone know any other fiction books written by copywriters.

Or fiction books featuring copywriters.

(As I live and breathe copywriting - it just wouldn't do to read about anything else ...lol).

  • Ted Bell and James Patterson are both former admen.

Ted Bell writes counter-terrorism style thrillers which are pretty good.

I'd recommend reading James Patterson's earlier work, especially books like Along Came A Spider, Black Market, or Kiss The Girls. In recent years, he's been churning stuff out with co-authors and it's not nearly as good. After reading over a dozen of his books, I've stopped reading Patterson for that reason.

    Hope that helps,

    Mike

P.S. They're not admen or copywriters but both Vince Flynn and Brad Thor write great counter-terrorism fiction (the TV show 24 was the same style) that are rich in descriptive language and create a strong visual story. I'd recommend either one of them as fun reads.

    • Mike,

      Thank you so much.

Now I have a fabulous reading list.

(it'll make a refreshing change from staggering through "Breakthrough Advertising" for the 5th time...mind you, I'm hoping I'll really, really "get it" by the 7th reading).

  • Not a copywriter, but Lee Child. The Jack Reacher novels. Fantastic writing style.

    • Yes, it is an excellent writing style - and nice to know that Jack gets his shoes made in the UK.

  • I read it and feel the same way!...what a great tale he put together there....
...and Richard's book isn't just BY a copywriter, but ABOUT a copywriter/dm marketer as well.
