Rent a list or create my own?

I'm looking to send a small campaign to business owners in my state (recreational sports operational managers). I know there are direct sales lists out there but not sure if I should go that route or ride the phone pony on my own and dig into the business yellow pages.

For those who have done this, what was the best use of your resources? Was it worth it using an outside service or did you find better (and more accurate) results by DIY?

Thanks in advance for thoughts/suggestions.

Give Google squared a try: Google Squared

Enter the type of business and the location (be specific for best results)

For examples: Plumber south hampton, NY will give more targeted results than plumber long island

The result is a list of businesses with contact information (many have emails too)

This is much faster and likely more accurate than a Yellow Pages.

    Good luck with your project

Ah, the ever-innovative Google Labs...lol. Thanks much for this recommendation, Drez! I did check them out and received some interesting results. I have a feeling I'm going to be calling some businesses directly, though, which isn't bad. Just time-consuming.

building a list takes a very long time, (and money), if you have a fantastic product you might as well approach a list owner with a sweet affiliate deal to plug your product to their list.

Very true, Tiger. However, since I'm new to this particular vertical, the goal is to introduce myself and include an offer (I'm thinking webinar) to get to know me plus receive some valuable info for their business. I don't have a product but a service. Still, I'm in the very beginning stages of edgecrafting an eBook idea. So eventually I'll get there.
