Nifty little site:

Freelance Writing Jobs | A Freelance Writing Community and Freelance Writing Jobs Resource

Basically aggregates current writing jobs by writing category. Most come from CraigsList. All types of writing. New list issued daily. No charge.

Good luck,

- Rick Duris

PS: One last thing. Most writers never follow up on a post. Too much work, lack of confidence, fear of rejection gets in the way. So just because there maybe an initial feeding frenzy, don't let that stop you from following up.

Just don't sell your soul for the job.

Look at it this way. In Laguna Beach, we have a day labor camp where you can pick-up immigrant labor for the hour or day. These guys hang out all day waiting for jobs to come in.

You can also find them in front of Uhaul and Home Depot.

But guess what? They have an informal union. No matter what the task, the minimum they will accept is $10/hour.

Seems they'll get the sh*t kicked out of them if others in camp find out they negotiated less.

So if they won't sell their souls, you don't have to sell yours. It's all about timing and positioning.

2nd secret: What I've discovered in different markets is that USUALLY the first few to follow up will have better luck at scoring a project. Shows ambition. Plus the poster gets swamped with 50+ respondents in first couple of hours.

It's the nature of CraigsList. (Nice thing about CraigsList is you don't have to deal with inane rules of these other sites.)

So following up on yesterday's opportunities, unless you're a persistent SOB, will probably yield nothing.

-----

3rd secret: Whatever you do, differentiate yourself. You gotta stand out from 50+ other folks. Something as simple as adding a headshot could do it, but I'm sure you can be more creative. (Video?)

------

4th secret:

You're better off responding to ads towards the end of the week. There will be less competition. Why?

I don't quite understand it, but the best time to get responses to work related ads is if the poster posts on Saturday afternoon. Seems people like to respond on Sundays. Probably has to do with the Sunday Job Guide mentality.

The good news is you stand a better chance on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

    Damn you Rick!

Why on earth reveal stuff amazing content without at least asking for an email?

Seriously, these are insights only an experienced professional can offer.

Having hired teams of people through CL I can attest that what Rick said is true.

    I'd add:
    • Reply using different email addresses with different subject headlines

Not all replies get read, because as Rick said, there are so many responses.

And to emphasis Rick's previous point, be different!!!

Tell them why you are better or unique.

And most importantly, have a personality.

    Shine. Warts and all.

Remember, stories sell. You are the story. You are the product.

I really do appreciate the sharing of secrets...especially for the heads-up on the best days to respond to ads. Back in the day when I was a hi-tech the same held true. I just never thought of it in terms of the online community!
