What are some of the most strange and weird excuses you've received from new potential clients not wanting to work with you as their copywriter?

  • Nothing. They just stop replying after a few exchanges.... lol.

  • Stop replying, or say its not the right time when it clearly is.
  • IMHO, if clients are disqualifying you, you're not selling yourself right.

Sure... you won't nail every pitch... we all make mistakes, regardless of experience.

But when a client contacts me I've basically set up my communications in such a way as to screen out the time-wasters so I can focus on only pitching the serious players.

It's a subtle mind-shift... but once you make it, your results will skyrocket. You're the expert, after all... you're the one who has to be willing to take on the project.

    • I agree. I let people know up front that I may or may not take their project. *I* am the one who's selective.

Usually when people approach me, they're not shopping around among different options. They want me, and if I say no, they ask me who I can recommend.

If you have confidence, you can create this dynamic even when you're fairly new in the business.

Given the question, where did ^ that come from?

Sorry Daniel you've lost me completely.

What does your point have to do with the humorous question at the start?

      Lighthearted folks, lighthearted.

The Copy Nazi got it. Humor guys, humor.
  • Just a quick note: People who don't work with you are not clients. People who have not yet worked with you are not clients.

Thinking they are might lead to all sorts of problems figuring out how to better convert prospects into real clients.
