I Promise That You Aren't Going to Make Money If...

...You waste your time sitting in front of the computer when you have absolutely no inspired thought what-so-ever!

In fact...

...One of the easiest ways to get burnt out as a writer is to force yourself to sling copy when the ideas just aren't there.

I know, I know...

...You have deadlines.

...You need to make money.

...You can't take on more clients until you've complete the projects you have.

...Your product is going to launch in just two weeks!

I'll tell you what...

...It's downright destructive to your career, product launch or marketing-confidence in general to work if you haven't been hit over the head with an idea that FEELS like a 2x4.

Go live your life.

...Take a walk on the coast.

...Swim in the lake.

...Go on a long bike ride.

...Hop in the car and drive somewhere... anywhere.

...Get yourself into a heated conversation about how to make a living online.

Just get your energy moving... RIGHT NOW!

Writing is a lifestyle that requires stimulation.

When you immerse yourself in rich experiences - without an agenda - the ideas come out of nowhere...

...and you're left running to computer like someone desperate for a toilet after taking a colon cleanser.

To Your Inevitable Success,

Mark P.

      Mark... thanks for the post.

All that fun leisure stuff is important. Soccer and golf do that for me. But if I'm stuck on a letter it usually just means one thing: I need to do more research. So I go do it, and invariably, that research leads to ideas in abundance.

That's one thing I have to learn how to do - relax.

My brother is getting married in 2 weeks and its a huge event for us, especially as my father has been very sick for a while...so I am under strict instructions to RELAX...and can't seem to...

...so I've used the wedding as an excuse to treat myself - hair done, facial etc and because I don't get the chance to get away, this is a nice treat for me.

And it does make copy flow much better because I feel well, peaceful. I still feel a little stressed because there is SO much to do - right now I am booked out for the next two months solid, and turning projects away all the time.

And if I get very stuck with copy...I put it to one side and do something else - and find that the 'brewing time' means I get some rest from it and a fresh supply of ideas!

Yeah you gotta chill lady :p

Massively well made point in this though... as with just about anything it seems, you can relate it to exercise.

The muscle and strength grows in the 'recovery' period, rather than during the exercise itself.

When you allow yourself just to chill the **** out, things loosen, pathways open and ideas flow.

I shouldn't, but I'll take a cigarette and stand in the garden now and again. Yeah I smoke it too, if that wasn't obvious... thus the 'shouldn't' bit

The last one worth noting, I'd just spent 5 hours or so putting together an email sequence with a view to releasing a product and I was fretting over what to do with the list after that.

Then it hit me... a way of making an extra $5,000 a month. And it was as simple as writing another 200 words or less.

Another example... The product I'll be putting together in the future, I wrote some initial copy for and was told it was missing something... nothing really unique.

So I stopped for 30 minutes or so and just... thought. Sort of went off in a daze for a while and then got an idea so awesome I had to throw my fist in the air.

No one was around but THAT'S how good the idea was. I didn't have any feedback, no way of substantiasting how good an idea it was, but I just knew.

They aren't hard to find... allocate 'thinking time' into your schedule and just chill.... meditate... relax

          RELAX!!!

            RELAX!!!
Bruce Lee often said something along the lines that excellence cannot be achieved in the absence of relaxation.

            It's so enormously true!

One of the biggest responsibilities we have to our clients (and ourselves) is taking immaculate care of our bodies and minds.

Disconnecting from a project can be more effective than countless hours of research.

In fact, most of the ideas I've had that produced massive conversions literally shot through me (like channeling) out of the cosmos.

It's a blast when that happens...

...when I have such a BIG that my fingers can barely keep up.

That's when I know what I'm writing is MONEY!

I don't even need to read the copy when it comes from pure utter inspiration! (even though I do, duh!)

...And yes Ross, there is a time to buckle down and keep diving deeper into a subject, but one ideal doesn't cancel out the other.

Everyone should go read about your sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems...

I know everyone has their vice. I have many myself but there's one that really tops all of them. . .

    Martial Arts.

    Most notably Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

When I go teach a class, I have to break down concepts, teach, convince, learn, strategize and grow. All key concepts in many facets of life including being a writer.

Eventually it comes down to rolling (the term used when you grapple with someone else). It's funny but you'd be surprised how in the zone you get when someone is trying to choke you unconscious or tear off a limb.

It's a complete physical and mental reset. Spiritual as well if you're into that sort of thing. I'd highly recommend BJJ to any and everyone for that alone, though there are many other reasons.

Also, I tried hot yoga with a friend of mine once. It was a fantastic experience. I never went back, though. Should fix that.

    Gotta disagree on this one.

I'm in John Carlton school of "writing with a gun to your head".

I produce my best results when the pressure is pounding.

    Another point of view.

      Been there, done that.

I prefer making good money... WHILE enjoying a high quality of life.

Working like there's a gun to your head is, in my opinion, asinine...

...for both yourself AND the client.

    Hey Mark,

While I understand what @copyassassin says and I tend to think like him, I believe you have made a solid point. Happy entrepreneurs make for happy clients and happy clients make for happy businesses - for everybody and the repeated kind.

Too much pressure and writing can become soul-destroying and dull! I believe that as writers our work lies in the strength of our inspiration, aspiration and motivation. Putting too much stress in there and it becomes just an other job we could hate...

For the love of writing, I wouldn't play with it!

So eventually, I'm team Mark on this one

Very true....If you're trying to write/create (copy, content, whatever) and it's just not there, put it aside....HOWEVER, go to something that is still productive...answering email, brainstorming, research, etc...sometimes this more mundane stuff wil end up triggering the creative writing juices again!
