Why Did YOU Get Into Copywriting & What Do You Ultimately Hope To Achieve?
I have to say I'm thoroughly enjoying the company found tucked away here in the Copywriting forum and I just did the washing up.
While this was after a cigarette break, I still had just a burst of curiosity and enthusiasm as I filled the sink... never underestimate the value of menial tasks...
So my question to you all today is this:
&
What Do You Ultimately Hope To Achieve?
Now I know nobody likes to walk down into the dark cellar first, so here's mine:
I quit my job about six months ago outright, with no savings, a fair whack of available credit and only a week's commission coming to me...
I had a bash at regular IM and it wasn't really as exciting as I'd hoped... and I realised to break into it and make good money, I was going to need a bit more time than I had.
But I'm young and stupid, so instead of looking for a part time job, I went out to apply for a £25,000 loan... I spun an awesome story about wanting to buy a TVR Tuscan (I can't drive) and cruise round Europe for a couple of months before getting married (no fiancée)... they bought it, they were totally excited for me, but my credit score didn't care.
No loan.
I decided to go at it anyway and started writing articles. I was charging $0.05 per word and had a collection of very satisfied customers and a few regulars. But ultimately, after writing a few too many on chairs and multi-level coffee marketing... I knew I had to get out.
Being a writer, it seemed the natural progression was to write copy... I realised quite soon and quite abruptly, the two talents are worlds apart.
Even still I found an excellent mentor and got to work.
I got into copywriting initially so I could earn more than $0.05 per word - But once I realised what actually goes INTO writing great copy... the skills you have to master and the insight you gain... I was born for this.
What do I hope to achieve?
Well I'd like to be one of the all time greats... however I never plan to work for an agency and I don't feel like setting one up... So I'm simply shooting for the respect of my peers... Think Russell Crowe in Beautiful Mind... just take away 60% of the psychosis and delusion.
