How 1 Question On The Warrior Forum Launched My Career

So that was my attempt at a witty headline, but this question could help me launch my career...

I am a writer with a background in adult erotica and fetish niche marketing. While the industry served me well, I am ready to move on. I am reading the recommended books and applying the knowledge through practice, as has been suggested in this forum. When I am ready to look for clients, will I need to cold call businesses and such? I have read that it is necessary to go out and ask for work in a face-to-face manner, and I wonder if that was how most of you got started.

If cold calling is not what you recommend, what should be an aspiring copywriter's method of obtaining new clients?

    There are numerous ways to get new clients. And no doubt, most if not all of them have been discussed on this forum at one time or another. (Try using the search feature to find them.)

    Here's one: run a PPC ad.

    Before you go looking for work, though, do yourself a BIG favor and learn the difference between positioning and prospecting.

      There are two ways to be able to edit your thread subject.

      1. On the index page, just double click into the thread title and edit.

      2. While in edit, hit the edit button a second time and it will open your subject for editing.

      Perhaps for both ways, I'm not sure, you need to make sure your options in your profile are set for the most advanced editing choice.

      My understanding of the difference is that if positioned correctly, one offers what the target market is looking for and therefore does not need to "prospect" like the stereotypical (and intrusive) door to door salesman. I wonder how you make your target market aware that you offer what they are looking for without some form of prospecting though. I am certain that things like visibility and established persona of authority regarding a niche help to position someone well, but it is my impression that you still have to ask for the work. I am not sure how you get "invited" when you are unknown.

        If you study positioning, you'll learn ways to get "invited".

        Here's but one example.

        One way to break in is to offer a copywriting product for sale. This immediately positions you as an authority in the minds of those who buy your product.

        Because they bought your product, you have them on a list and can communicate with them each day. Those emails will allow you to develop your persona and back story in their minds.

        Many marketers buy copywriting products but wind up hiring somebody anyway. So for those on your list, you'll be the natural person who they turn to get their copy written.

          If I just have dandruff, can you teach me how to attract new clients 3x faster? And please don't include a reminder about not wearing dark blue or black. I already know that trick.

            I'm sorry Jake, the video is for people with all three conditions. Since you only have one, you don't qualify.

            Do you have either jock itch or toe fungus? I'm thinking of making a second video, but haven't had time to do market research yet and assess the demand for those two conditions.

    Start positioning yourself as an expert in your field by writing blog posts, articles and the likes. Submit these articles to article directories, and promote these listings on search engines by getting back links to these pages. This will give you a web presence in your new niche.

    Start posting on forums related to your niche, edit your signature to point back to your blog. Make your blog's call to action your prospect system, or straight up order taking forum.

    Start a PPC campaign, install google analystics and see if your ROI is worth continuing a PPC campaign (Adsense, Yahoo, MSN, Bing, etc.).

    If brick-and-mortal real world contacts makes sense to you, go that route. Not my bag, so I can't advise you here.

    Erotica niche sounds FUN! I'm in the occult/spiritualist niche now. A total inverse sounds fun. Wanna trade?

      Studio13 - thanks so much; that clears up my confusion. I stay away from the occult, but erotica has been very fun. I mostly deal with Femdom and related sub-niche culture (feminization, humiliation, cuckolding, and so forth). You should cross over sometime, we would love to have you :-)

      So, for me the best ever way to get clients is...

      Send your "targets" a sensational Sales letter.

      (It's low cost, easy to do, and the results are fabulous).

      You can follow it up by phone.

      I never do - I wait for them to phone.

      Because when they call (and if your "pitch" is good - they will).

      You know you have a red hot client.

          No - not email that's far to high tech for me.

          A Sales Letter (the best possible "pitch" you can write).

          In an envelope, with a live stamp and bung them in the box on the street.

          Make sure it's the post box.


          Wait a few days - and the phone starts to ring.

          I so much prefer it when it's all kept simple.

    I don't think that was witty at all. I think it was much better than witty -- it was effective.

    You didn't say how one thing got you a job, but how a single question launched your career. Imagine all the people on WF that would benefit from asking the right question instead of chasing fads. You could definitely spin a page on that to sell something real easy, methinks.

    The positioning thing is important and all the advice above is stellar.

    If you are looking for a great resource for getting clients via cold calling (if that is your preference), then check out Arfa's WSO: Freelance Firebird.

    You pay less than you would for a movie ticket and you get a bag of gold, imo. I's the only WSO I've ever purchased. And no I'm not an affiliate marketer.

      Here's How They Did It...

      Bob Bly - I mailed out 500 letters and within four or five weeks, I had 35 people respond, which was a 7% response and I was on my way. I had 35 people who were interested in learning to some degree about my copywriting services and I began to respond to those as best I could in my limited time because I was already employed. And they began to become clients.


      Clayton Makepeace - Clayton would mail to the marketing directors of 100 direct response companies every week. He would send a package with appropriate copywriting samples and a sales letter selling his services. He sent the package by federal express to each marketing director and he would call the day he sent them to let the marketing directors know to expect something he was sending them. Then he'd call the day after the package was scheduled to arrive and ask the marketing director if he/she had received it.


      Parris Lampropoulos - Parris went to a direct response conference in Las Vegas boasting some of the greats of copywriting as speakers including Gary Halbert, Ted Nicholas and Dan Kennedy. He wrote a sales letter for his own services while he was at the conference with the title "How To Hire A World Class Copywriter for Pocket Change".


      Arthur Johnson - Million dollar copywriter Arthur Johnson ran into an old high school friend in a bar. She knew he always wanted to be a writer, explained that the place she worked - Franklin Mint - was looking for writers and asked him for a resume. Arthur was hired as a copywriter by the Franklin Mint.


      Dan Lok - Canadian copywriter Dan Lok started out with no money and very little command of the English language (English was his second language). Dan gave his first copywriting prospects an offer most found it hard to refuse - they would only have to pay him if his copy produced profits for them. To capture his first clients he asked for a set fee if he made profits for his clients.

    I agree with EricMN - not witty at all. Simply Brilliant. It's laser-focused to the people who want the information and exactly where they'll find it.

    One of the ways that I find most effective to get new copywriting clients is offer a free copy consultation. The purpose of the consultation is not to tell them what words to write, but to uncover their stumbling blocks, sticking points, and frustrations in writing their own copy - and what those problems are costing them in terms of wasted time, expended energy, and LOST SALES.

    Then you contrast that against the expense of hiring you and it makes your services look cheap. When you do this right, with the right prospects, it makes their decision a no-brainer.
