Who, Exactly Are You Looking For?

I see this happen in a lot of threads, so maybe Allen or a mod can make it sticky. The term "copywriter" seems to mean several things to several people, so I thought a thread might be a good idea to cover it once and for all - and help you find exactly the type of professional you're looking for

A copywriter - is someone who promotes and advertises a product or service through their writing. They typically charge thousands to tens of thousands of dollars for a sales letter, with royalties usually figured on top of that (because if they're good, that sales letter will sell a ton of product!). Copywriters also write ads for B2B ad material for the things that go INTO a product and not just for the product itself.

An article writer - is someone who researches and writes original articles from scratch. Also known as a content writer. They can also write website and blog content as well as email and autoresponder messages. Good article writers command anywhere from $30+ per article.

An article re-writer is someone who repurposes content from other websites, public domain info, other articles and turns it into another article by itself. They don't typically do research, they just formulate an existing article into other words. If you want to pay somebody $2 for a 500 word article - this is very likely what you'll get.

When you need someone to write articles (or rewrite them) for you, you aren't looking for a copywriter.

If anybody wants to clarify any part of the definition or add to it, by all means please do! I just wrote it to help out people who come here looking for article writing instead of copywriting, then have their jaws drop when they see the price is $10,000.
