7 Reasons Why I Love Direct Mail

Today young Chris is a very happy chap!

We just started to get the response from a new sales letter we mailed last week and so far it looks like we have struck gold. It is a real Dragon-Slayer!

Reminded me of how much I love Direct Mail and how thankful I am to guys like Drew Eric Whitman and Yanik Silver (My two biggest mentors as a copywriter)

Anyway- 5 Reasons Why I LOVE Direct Mail:

1. Because you are always just one good sales letter away from getting all the leads you need.

2. Because if you get it right, you pre-qualify leads before they even speak to you.

3. Because it out-performs email by a factor of about 1,000 to one.

4. Because there is no Google Slap!

5. Because of the awesome thrill that I feel every time the phone rings and someone says; "G'day I'm calling about the letter you sent me!"

6. Because with a little bit of effort you get straight past the gatekeeper! (Try doing THAT with email!)

7. Because it is so easy to test!

What about you?

What do you like about Direct Mail?

Because when it is sent the right way, it gets opened, read and acted on.

Because some recipients appreciate the time you took to actually compose and send a real letter.

What do you like about Direct Mail?
Because it takes so much longer to measure results, and I get to exercise patience... NOT!

        LOL

    I like direct mail because:
Your age is never an issue…
    Your gender doesn’t matter…
Your education level is never critical…
Your height, weight or color are normally immaterial…
It is your product and sales letter that speaks out. And if they are right you can start from the corner of your house and build a multimillion business.

Tried Direct Mail but didn't have much success with it. Seems like many of you love it so I may have to revisit it again.

        Definitely worth revisiting

I'm not sure who said this originally, but - If you try direct mail and it doesn't work, you shouldn't blame direct mail, try a different approach. You don't say flight doesn't work when there's a plane crash.. Joe Polish maybe?

What I love about direct mail is the ability to deliver a targeted message to a qualified lead.

    Virtual clink of glasses... (gulp)

    Good for you, Chris.

I'm always tickled to see internet marketers get hip to good old-fashioned warhorses like direct mail and picking up a phone.

There's an entire generation of would-be entrepreneurs who act as if every communication they'll ever have with their customer has to happen over http.

Yep... they're in the same generation of people who'd rather text/email than call, rather watch movies on their mobiles than on TV, rather read a book on Kindle than on paper, etc.

To successfully market to their generation, direct mail and 1-800 numbers don't do much good.

In terms of the front-end, I tend to agree.

In terms of the back-end, I couldn't agree less.

Not so. They are the same generation that still LOVE to get a package in the mail! My last few clients (from this most recent mail out) have all been in their 30's, have IPhones and Ipads etc but told me stuff like "Mate I just couldn't put your package down! I was sold the moment I opened it and saw my name on that report cover!"

Direct Mail STILL works - perhaps even more so with this generation because so many copywriters/marketers have jumped on the 'Today's generation won't respond to it' train of thought.

They have left a much less crowded marketplace for those of us who do use DM.

    • Because I don't have to wait an eternity for a video to download.

And freeze, and reload, and start, and stop.

Being held prisoner for up to an hour while it drones on and on...(and freezes, reloads, starts and stops).

Or get distracted by pop-ups shadowing me down the page.

Screaming for my email before I get past the headline (and it takes a while to read a 67 word headline).

Or wade through 27 testimonials before I get a chance to read the "pitch"

Or be told to hit the "buy now" button - 7 times before I get to see what the offer is.

And if I ever make it to the offer...

Scrolling endlessly through rambling copy that is long just for the sake of being long.

And when I finally get to the point of the whole thing.

The page may well have darkened to let the demented pop up catch me up.

So I'll never know what I missed.

It's great to get a real live letter.

It might not be world class but it makes a refreshing change.
