Advertising / Marketing Gone Horribly Wrong

Some business owners constantly amaze me.

There is a story behind the 2 images below... (see attachment)

The story is a salesman actually went to this company and tried to sell them on the benefits of advertising their business on the front of trash bins. You can only imagine how he must have talked up the 'benefits' lol.

And the business owner (heavens above! ) thought to him or herself, "You know what? I think this would be an excellent place to advertise our business. This will definitely connect with our target market and will send out a truly superb positive message about our product to our target market." (Sarcasm fully intended)

What company in their right mind selling this product (quality meats) could possibly think to themselves that this represented a good advertising and marketing solution for their needs?

They may just as well have used the expression 'cag mag' (a Gaelic and Welsh word meaning 'bad / rotten meat') on the printed advertisement.

That's right, advertise on the bottom front of a trash bin in a public place for a quality meat company where every dog can cock it's leg and piss on your advertisement.

Let me know your thoughts or if you have other examples of advertising and marketing gone horribly wrong down below...

Best,

  • Mark,

Yea, the worst ever "product placement" I've seen (lol).

And I think I might have bought a couple of steaks from the shop last time I was in Falmouth - luckily I never noticed the Ads.

Most TV ads go horribly wrong.

A 30 second spot - 25 seconds trying to "entertain you" and 5 seconds telling you nothing of any real interest about the product.

I'm fully convinced that most of the ads that go terribly wrong, are the ads that some small businesses do.

Most have no idea of how to advertise...but are sucked in by the local newspaper ad writer/salesperson that convinces them that they need to advertise as much as possible...

...most small business owners confuse "effort with results".

I was watching T.V. one day when an ad came on advertising a business that sold Televisions.

Across the bottom of the ad they had a message scrolling that said:

"We only service what we sell, otherwise we wouldn't have time to service our customers"

I was thinking that was the oddest thing to say.

A couple days later I talked to the owner and explained to him that his message made it sound like the stuff they sold was so bad that they were working full time to repair their own crap.

    He changed the message.

Not to beat a dead quadruped, but I'd nominate the ring guy from this thread: http://www.warriorforum.com/copywrit...d-waiting.html

I still think, well ... you can read what I think.

I believe some who've posted there are equating shock value and humor with making the sale in a veeerrrry high-end product niche.

Meaning I think the people who'd be impressed by the ring guy, probably don't have the scratch to buy his products.

Alright, I'm letting the horse up. But just this one time.

    Interesting subject you brought up...

I did a google search on "ads gone wrong", and found some funny stuff.

Not saying either of these ads are bad, just saying the placement of them is terribly wrong.

I think the company didn't know where their ads are/were placed. They could have signed the contract with the advertising company and the ad company hired 'thugs' (lol) to stick the ads just about anywhere with a flat surface.

    OK,

If the bin was outside a *really* bad burger joint, it might not be such a bad idea. Lots of people throwing away their horrid burgers in the bin and seeing "quality meats" instead?

    OK I'm stretching ...

Cheaper advertising space does not actually mean better.

However (while this may not be the case), some similar cases may actually prove a good investment.

You don't know if it's a good placement until you know the ROI. Maybe it's actually a good deal.

(without taking into consideration brand recognition, etc).
