How To Get The Opt In?

Hi,

I am working on a new website and the SEO rankings etc are going quite well considering it is so brand new.

However, the traffic is still not great but more importantly, my client is not seeing any sign ups into his opt-in box.

As professional copy writers, could one or two of you take a quick look at the two important pages on the site - ie the home page and the call to action page and give me your opinion about

a/ what's there that maybe shouldn't be there

and/or

b/ what's missing, the presence of which would make a difference.

I'd appreciate your opinions. Thank you in advance.
The pages are as follows:

City Garden Design Courses | Landscaping Design Ideas
and
About the Course | Garden Design Courses

Sometimes it takes an outsider to come along and point out something that is in plain view that I am just not seeing - any thoughts guys? - much appreciated.

All the best

Sam

    Hello Sam,

Let me see if I can help you out here...

...first, I see you're asking for name, email AND phone number as opposed to just name and email--for a free ebook.

Something about that just seems a bit strange to me... and it may be a reason you're seeing little to no response with your opt in rate.

Personally, I've never entered all three of those details in return for a simple ebook... but hey, that's just me.

The second thing I'm noticing is your opt in box is wayyyy "below the fold"...

...meaning your visitors have to scroll down quite a ways just to see it.

In fact, they've got to go more than half way down the page.

As a rule of thumb, you'll see more opt ins when your readers don't have to scroll...

    ...but test, and test EVERYTHING.

There was a gentleman in here the other day (first name of Veit) who actually saw BETTER results by having his opt in box at the bottom of the page... VS. having it up towards the top...

...so nothing is really 'set in stone' here.

That's what I noticed right away, Sam, but here's what I LIKED about your page:

Overhead Photo In The Middle - I like how you're getting readers to imagine in this section.

    "Imagine the feeling..."

I also like the next sentence:

    "How great will you feel..."

As it's presuppositional, assuming that they WILL feel great. Good stuff!

The way this page is set up now, it looks to me like the main goal is to get visitors to either call or email Andrew.

(At the top of the page, with no scrolling necessary, the "Call or click to email" section got my attention.)

If you want more attention drawn to the opt in box, maybe you could make the image a bit smaller and squeeze an email form right below it... so visitors don't have to scroll.

    Questions for you:

Have you gotten ANY opt ins the way it's set up right now?

How have the results been with Andrew getting calls and/or emails with the way it's set up now?

    And about your SEO rankings...

...what keywords are you ranking for?

Are you matching up what the visitor is searching for with what you're giving them on the page?

You want it to be a nice, smooth, seamless experience for the searcher... because if they don't see what they're looking for immediately, chances are slim that they'll stay on the page long enough to scroll down half-way, and fill in your form.

Those are my initial thoughts, Sam...

    ...any questions, let me know.

    Jake

P.S. This is just my analysis of your home page--but I see that your "about the course" page is very similar.

      Jake,

Thanks for taking the time to give me your thoughts - very helpful -

Id seen the problem with the phone number and just hadnt got round to changing that (because its "code" - but Im just excusing my being lazy and not getting it done really)

I dont know why but I never thought to question it being below the fold. I can easily amend that as well and lets see how we get on with it that way - as you say - testing everything is the way to go.

Thanks again. I really appreciate your taking the time.

      All the best

Your opt-in is too far down the page on the right side of your site. Studies show that placing your opt-in at the upper right hand corner will increase your opt-in rate.

Try that. I would also suggest taking off the required phone number entry. Since the person doesn't know you or anything about your company, it's hard to get them to want to provide their phone number. Once you establish a relationship with the person then you may be able to get the number.

Only companies with an established reputation like Wal-mart, Nike, ect. can still have a high conversion rate while requiring a phone number....But even so it took them years to establish a global reputation and trust to allow them to do so.

You say you are not getting very much traffic, besides the changes to the copy and opt in box placement, maybe you just need more targetted traffic.

I'd suggest changing the color of the FREE Flower Gardening Tips E-book. Right now it's such a light blue that it's easily overlooked. Most people aren't going to sign up because you aren't catching their attention for WHY they should sign up. Changing the color will help.

Consider the niche carefully and ensure that you are you are supplying something that the visitors need in that niche! Something which is obviously FREE yet, make sure your squeeze page (optin page) is short and punchy, get everything on to one screen, make sure your headline is fully visible and that the visitor understands immediately what they are looking at. Deliver the item within 24 hours and you should have a loyal opt-in sub right there!

    Best of luck

There are some good things about your site. In addition all the points already mentioned, I noticed this:

Under the optin in box the message says:

Sign Up Above For More Info About Our Garden Design Courses And How To Book Your Place Today

Maybe I missed it, but the visitor is expected to risk entering their details and risk being bombarded with a load of follow up emails but there isn't a very compelling, SPECIFIC reason to optin to your list.

What value can you offer them in exchange for them opting in?

If you can offer them a Specific benefit or quality report or piece of content or even a free consultation for signing up that'll give them a sample of what they can expect from the paid course then you'll stand a better chance of getting an optin.

Also try placing flashing or static red/blue arrows pointing down or towards the right to the optin box like The Warrior Forum optin arrow or hand drawn type arrows.

I would also test moving the optin box to the top right of the page and the picture of your client below the optin box. There's no point of the pic being at the top if it's not going to get you the opt-in.

You could also try adding a short 2-5 minute video of some of the best gardens that your client has worked
on, instead of the static garden picture so people can get a visual idea of what the end result could look like after they take the course.

Or include a slideshow with some good samples of before and after pictures of gardens that your client has designed.

Another important aspect which you could work on is on improving the benefits. How would a garden design or re-design improve or change the quality of the owner's life?

It might be worth testing a wider Sales Page style copy with or without video on the main page with the optin box to the top right of the page.

After all the above changes, try sending more targeted traffic from various sources to see which one gets you the best results.

Finally, one marketer uses banner advertising on keyword targeted high ranking sites for his traffic. He gets some very good results.
