Can we hit $5,000 by the beginning of January?

Thank you for your understanding.

I've run this idea past Brian McLeod hence now posting it up here...

Come late December early January (depending on local weather conditions) I'm planning on doing a minimum 10 mile row in my small open fishing boat similar to this Orkney Spinner here...

She's 13'6" long, double skinned fibreglass. The make of my boat is Ferranti, very similar to the above boat.

I'm planning on setting off from Durgan hamlet close to the mouth of the Helford River rowing the 6 miles upstream to the village of Gweek before turning around and heading back downstream to Durgan again... total distance just under 12 miles.

I reckon depending on the tide, it should take me around 5-7 hours of solid rowing.

I'm looking for sponsorship
A minimum $1 donation per mile rowed

So, who's in?...

Who wants to pledge $1 minimum per mile rowed to further help out Ken Strong?

If you could please... do spread this around the Warrior Forum. It would be appreciated if we could get as many Warrior's behind this as possible. The more sponsorship, the better!

All for a good cause.

And the sponsorship money pledged? It all goes directly to Ken Strong and the cancer charities he wishes to support.

Please post below stating the amount of your pledge in dollars per mile rowed.

I'll set a first date probably for late December depending on tide and weather conditions. Might even film the entire row.

Now, who's in?

Best,

Mark Andrews

PS Click on the attachment below, this is the Helford River in west Cornwall, UK. Durgan is just behind that headland in the foreground on the right hand side. Gweek is at the top of the river (you can't see it here) but it's the village right at the top of the Helford.

PPS On board so far with sponsorship...

Azmanar $5 per mile pledged.
Richard Van $5 per mile pledged.
Burton Lancaster $5 per mile pledged.
(Private 1) $2 per mile pledged.
Steve Copywriter $5 per mile pledged.

isn't a "row" also the term for a fight which seems appropriate for battling cancer? I thought this might be boxing on a street named 10 mile (Detroit has 8 mile).

Thanks everyone for your support and pledges made so far - excellent!

      Please keep them coming!

I've updated the OP with the pledges, amounts promised / made so far, along with the names of the Warriors who are very kindly supporting this good cause to help Ken Strong.

Further ideas how to monetize this are also more than welcome.

      Cheers me hearties!

I'm typing this on Thanksgiving day.

And the truth is I am so thankful that my family isn't going through what Kens is.

Get better Ken that's all you have to do. And you will.

It must have been tough for Ken to tell us about his cancer and ask for help - bet he didn't do it for himself (I wouldn't blame him one bit if he did) my guess is he did it for his family.

So Mark I too am sponsoring you - don't worry if you fall in, or only do 10 yards, I'm paying for the 10 plus miles.

    You're doing a great thing.

    Cheers,

Thanks Kay. I've added your name to the list in the OP.

        Please keep them coming.

I'm actually penning in a date now for this - Christmas Day (depending on the tides and the weather forecast)

I've got no family here to celebrate Christmas with so I might as well give up the day to give to somebody else in more need than I. Plus, it'll be a pleasure to do so.

For now, Christmas Day it is.

Please spread the word around the Warrior Forum and elsewhere, ideally we'd like to raise a lot more sponsorship especially from more copywriters who at the moment are a bit thin on the ground coming out with their offers for sponsorship.

        Many thanks!

Lets hope by then you have a good enough tide to Gweek.

Otherwise you'll have to circle a couple of times between Port Navas and Durgan to make the 10 miles.

            By then?

You do realise the tide comes in twice a day? Anywhere between 3.8m to 5.4m depending on the current position of the moon and the time of year?

Around Christmas Day they'll be relatively low high tides at approximately 4.1m or just over 12'. Plenty enough water to get a 13'/14' boat upstream even with all the mud bars and banks en route.

If Seacore can get their ships to wharf side at the top of the river at Gweek, I don't honestly think I'm going to have too many problems.

            Landlubbers are funny creatures.

Now using the opportunity... how about a bit more sponsorship folks? Bit slow getting off the ground here. Let's have a few more of you aboard on this.

Love the fatalistic attitude, really positive!

Frozen stiff? I doubt it. I've been around boats for years and know this river like the back of my hand. I was born literally almost on the bank of the Helford here at Trebah Garden...

      trebah - Google Search

Don't worry, I'll be wearing a thick pair of wooly socks, spare warm dry clothing onboard, a flask of hot tea / food, rolling baccy, a boat hook and bailer, my stereo for some music and a Christmas tree in the stern to cheer me up as I meander my way forwards (well in my case backwards) taking photographs of the scenery as I glide past at about 2mph.

Don't worry, I'm not planning on going for a swim lol. Any luck I might catch some fish en route too. I'll be fine. Don't worry Max lol.

I've got you down for $105 a mile.

      Thanks mate!

See that house over on the left? That's where I'll be setting off from - Durgan.

And this beach? This used to be our private beach before Trebah Garden was open to the public. Back in the 60's my family worked for Donald Healey, owner of the Austin Healey Sports Car Company. We had the little lodge at the back of the main house. Good memories. My first ever childhood memories, in fact my first ever memory at 1 1/2 years old was standing here at Polgwidden Beach.

Trebah Garden is also known as the Magical Gardens of Trebah - The Garden of Dreams, it's rated in the top 80 paradise gardens worldwide. It's an exquisitely beautiful spot. With a sad twist...

This garden is also of some interest to our fellow Americans, why?...

      U.S. 29th Infantry Division...

Trebah is described as the ‘Garden of Dreams’ – a steeply wooded ravine full of tree ferns, waterfalls, and rhododendrons leading down to Polgwidden Cove, a secluded beach on the river. It’s wild, enchanted and full of beautiful surprises.

In 1944 a regiment of 7500 men of the 29th US Infantry Division embarked from Polgwidden Cove to the D-Day assault landing on Omaha Beach in Normandy where they suffered terrible casualties. A memorial at the bottom of the garden commemorates the courage of these brave young American soldiers. http://helfordriver.net/trebah/

      Durgan...

      Frenchman's Creek...

      Tremayne Quay...

I'll be rowing right past this spot heading upstream to Gweek.

Next sponsor? Whose it going to be?...

Okay, do I have a Saturday sponsor?

Who would like to jump in first today?

If you'd rather, contact me privately via pm and I won't publicly mention your name. Any amount is welcome, there is no minimum as such, whatever you have or can spare it all helps and your offer would be really appreciated.

      Kindest regards,

First let me say you've got a good thing going here, Mark. Good luck with it. Ken really needs help with this.

Last week The Montello Marketing Mob donated cash to Ken. And we also solicited more donations on the clambake webinar. We will solicit more this week on the clambake.

But let me say... to everyone who hasn't donated... please do. Ken's a good guy that just needs a little leg up right now.

        Thank you Rick, nice one.

I've updated the list of donations in the OP. And thank you too, to the small flurry of Warrior's who contacted me privately with your $2 per mile donations. Very much appreciated.

If you cannot afford a per mile donation, do feel welcome please to donate a total amount for example $5, $10 or whatever you can afford. Every donation helps, more than you can imagine!

Still got Christmas Day penciled in for this Ken Strong / Cancer Research Fundraiser. December 25th 2011 it is depending on local weather conditions and tides. If not favorable, I'll simply pen in another day.

PLEASE DO KEEP THE DONATIONS ROLLING IN!

        Kindest regards,

        Mark Andrews

PS Tuesday 29 November UPDATE: Christmas Day is a no go. I'm going to come forward a few days... The row will now take place on Tuesday 20th December NOT Christmas Day! (The tides are completely wrong for December 25th, basically if I do it on this day... I'll be stranded on a mud bank which I know some of you would probably quite enjoy seeing lol.

Tuesday 20th December it is depending on local weather conditions. Low tide will be at approximately 0630hrs. High tide will be at approximately 1235hrs (4.84M) and low tide at 1930hrs again. Perfect! It gets light here at about 0830hrs and dark again at 1645hrs.

Just over $2,000 so far Arfa.

The initial target was $10,000 but since I've brought the event forward a few days because of local tidal conditions, I suspect we won't hit this target now. It would be good to do so but I don't think it's going to happen.

It's up to the Warrior's and copywriters here to prove me wrong.

The total number of contributions are all in the opening post. Truth be told? I'm surprised by the absence of a few copywriters on this forum who haven't yet contributed. I'm waiting on them to lead by example and to set the lead for others to follow. It would be great to see everyone chipping in a little bit afterall.

I realize some are involved in other fundraising efforts but there's nothing wrong with a bit of 'cross contamination'. I've contributed elsewhere whilst also preparing for this event.

Come on guys... are you going to step upto the plate or not?

How about chipping in whatever you can afford?

I know times are tough for one or two of you (Mark grins) but that's no excuse, we'd do the same for you if you were in a similar boat, no pun intended.

So come on, whip out your wallet and make us an offer below...

Maybe I'm going out on a limb here, I don't know.

But I'm going to steal a page from the Jerry Lewis telethon playbook.

I'll match, dollar for dollar, any new public pledges/contributions that get posted here.

That means whatever money you see fit in contributing, I'll chip in an equal amount. Instantly, your contribution is worth twice as much to Ken.

        Why am I doing this?

Well, let's just say throughout my life, I've had several close calls. Way too close for comfort. Today, I know all too well the value of having angels in my corner.

Come on fella's and lasses too, what an amazing and very generous offer from Rick Duris.

This is a brilliant time to contribute now whatever you can afford! It's my birthday in a few minutes time - 45 years old on December 1st 2011.

You couldn't give me a better birthday present if you tried than contributing towards this worthy cause. All donations are more than welcome.

The boat is going in the water this weekend. Training starts early next week with a couple of warm up 5 mile rows on the river.

Please do contribute NOW! Make my birthday dreams come true...

Much appreciation in advance to everyone participating in this and helping to spread the word around the Warrior Forum.

Mark...put me down for the 5 and don't lose your leg like my cousin Pookie did in a tragic bass fishing accident years ago. (Thank God it wasn't salt water or it might have gotten "messy")

Ken.....cancer is a bitch bro. I don't like talking about it or focusing on it but much like you.....Vinnie has got it. Spinal. Stage two. And it ****ing sucks.

What do I know 4 sure? That the strength of the human spirit is often enough to overcome even the worst cases.

No matter what price they give you.....prepare to spend more. Not sure of your insurance situation, but due to a prior exisiting condition....Vinnie is "damaged goods" and couldn't buy insurance for any amount of money...and it's called "cash or bury" and fortunately I was able to extract some equity out of our restaurant building or most likely I would shoot snake eyes for real.

Not everyone can do that....and for me the hardest part is the pain this causes my family as I know u can relate..... You have to go through each day "faking a smile" telling everyone life is gonna be ok when in fact u don't really know. I do it every day.

Radiation is a bitch and I absolutely will NOT do KIMO.......but believe as should you that deep down we know if we're gonna "go" or "stay". I personally believe with the love and support of your fellow Warriors there is no reason "money" should be the difference between life and death.

I believe that I need to work on my personal attitude which quicky has gone from self pity to bitterness to just plain feeling like ****. Sick of being sick........but life is too long not to enjoy it.....and figure I got one more good run left in me if I am so lucky.

You've been in this house a long long time......you give your very best. And I assure everyone that what ever you give will come back to you ten fold.....it's quantum physics, baby.

Dis-ease. That's all it is. Cancer can NOT rob your spirit or soul. And I find that I look at every blade of grass now and count leaves and "see" **** I use to walk past and took for granted. I realize how blessed I am that I can get treatment for both MS and Cancer at the same time and still manage to keep up with the ladies although if my hair turns any grayer that's gonna be a trick to pull off.

My best advice is to remember that we attract that which we focus on. Therefore I don't write much or talk much about my situation...because even in the positive spirit it is intended I don't think any focus is to my benefit.....but here's hoping it is to yours.

I've had a least 30 kind souls send me remedies of all sorts. These peeps mean well but most simply do not have the science behind them. I will send you a rather simple one....that a Nobel Prize winning nominee (6 years in a row) discovered in terms of two magic foods that will kill cancer...and various other issues. She's no quack.

And please take them.....as it has kept me off KIMO which is poison killing poison which never made much sense to me you know. So I'm gonna pm u later for your email and send you the pdf...and wish you only the best life has to offer.

See your mind and body as perfect.....find solace and joy in the simple things along with any family you treasure and you'll find you're actually "living" rather then worrying "about dieing" if that makes any sense.

      God Bless,

      Vegas Vince

Like Vince says. And Rick too... Smell the flowers, their perfume lasts for such a short time...

I think a lot of folks are touched by the demon one way or another, and have close shaves with other things too. I had my problem (heart), fixed it and now do stupid **** like breaking bones falling off horses and motorbikes. I should be ashamed at my age, but hey - time is limited and I gotta lot left to do yet.

Besides, I promised myself years ago that I will choose the time and method of my passing.

All donations on completing the 10 mile row will go directly to Ken Strong's email address. I'll give you this when I've completed the row. I'm not handling any of the donations / sponsorship pledges directly.

        Thank you Diana, much appreciated!

Little update, I've been working on the boat, given her a fresh coat of paint and some new fixings for the gunwales.

She's going in the water this week thanks to a good mate of mine who is going to put her on the back of his trailer. Just over 2 weeks now to get some good practice in, a few 5 mile rows to warm up the old muscles for the big day.

Still good for Tuesday 20th December depending on local weather conditions. I'll be taking photographs of the entire trip which I'll post up here and maybe get a little video in too.

If you haven't donated yet, please do so now!

Anything and everything donation wise, even a $1 donation - it all helps. Come on... surely everybody here can afford a minimum donation of just $1. And you copywriters who still haven't jumped in on this, why not do so now?

Let's see how many donations we can bring in this week. Let's get this rockin' and rollin'. If you could please, do spread the message around the Warrior Forum, put the link in your signatures or email your subscriber opt-in list. Let's get as many Warriors on board with this as possible!

Please make your donation or pledge below right now...

Update: I'm home now and continuing my treatments there. Feeling good. I really appreciate all the help, as bills are starting to come in now. The insurance company is denying some claims, saying my coverage was ended before the medical visits, which is news to me. I'm all paid up on my wife's plan and this is the first we've heard about it, if true. So I get to try and find a live human on the phone and see what the hell they're talking about. I should be able to get it worked out, but it's really a pain.

Anyway, I really appreciate all the help from everybody, including Mark's rowing venture. It's made all the difference to us.

I'd like to see some of you row 10 bloody miles in mid winter in the pouring rain with the wind howling in choppy waters with the tide against you pulling on the oars for all you're worth, just prior to Christmas.

Nice one Jonathan, thank you very much.

To the rest of you who haven't contributed yet, must it really be like dragging blood out of a stone? What do you want the full sales pitch?

I'm really rather puzzled here... it's rather noticeable the copywriters who have donated to this and those names which are missing from the list of Warrior's donating in the OP.

Is business so bad for some of you, you can't even part with a dollar?

If this was switched around and you were in this guys shoes, would you want others to help you out or not?

So come on... be a good sport and get behind this now. What's it going to hurt you really? Can you seriously sit there and tell me you can't bear to part with what amounts to the amount spent for a couple of beers?

And all you guys asking for a review of your current sales copy how about...

...as a way of saying thank you for all the great advice you're offered, you donate just a dollar or two to this very worthy cause right now?

A week today, weather permitting Harlan. Forecast is dreadful for the weekend though, another batch of storm force gales coming through with 60-70mph winds.

It could be a bit of touch and go on the date, wrong time of year really. Not only am I dependent on the weather, local wind conditions and ideally wanting a dry day too but also the local tides.

This isn't unfortunately an inland river, the tidal drop here can be as much as 5.8 metres. As you can imagine, the tidal flow or current here is pretty strong. And I can't get all the way up to Gweek except on the high tide. If I have to postpone, it's just the way it is, not a lot I can do about it and I'm certainly not going to endanger my own life or do anything which needlessly means calling out the RNLI inshore lifeboat.

It's not just a case of jumping in any old boat and rowing merrily upstream without a care in the world. Though fairly sheltered for the most part you still don't want to mess with the sea. She's a cruel mistress and not one to be trifled with.

I'll do my best for next Tuesday 20th December as aforementioned but many factors are also outside of my control at this time of the year such as the weather. This is afterall, one of the windiest places to live in the United Kingdom.

All I can say is, I'll do my best for next Tuesday.

      All the very best... Cheers!

Mark holds his head in his hands and peers out between his fingers...

    Shhhhh...

I don't believe I'm saying this, but, well, how to put this...

...there's been a bit of a problem getting my boat in the water believe it or not, fret not - Plan B...

It's okay, I've got my beady eye on another boat a couple of feet longer than my one which has been well, hmmm kind of just moored on the river bank amongst many others for a good while now, close to where I used to keep another one of mine.

I'm just going to 'borrow' it for a few hours. "Honest Sir! It's for a charity fundraiser!" Mark grins and flexes his muscles in preparation for the row on Tuesday morning. Weather forecast isn't looking too bad.

Rather looking forward to the event, albeit I'll have to nick another boat to do the 10 mile row on behalf of Ken Strong.

Further donations (to the temporary theft of this boat) much appreciated.

Sorry guys, another one of those Mark Andrews royal cock ups.

Please donate now, come on... let's have a few more donations on board!

    Thanks lol.

I'll be fine Ken, don't worry - I've been around boats ever since I was a nipper.

There's still several copywriters from this forum (you know you are) who've not donated a single cent unfortunately, which has come as a bit of a surprise truth be told.

How about today you put all differences aside and dip your hand into your pocket generously and make a donation now?

All donations made public today (private pm donations excluded) will be matched by Rick Duris adding a double benefit to whatever amount you pledge. As good an excuse as any to donate something at least. Whatever you can afford to give.

Let's see a few more donations below please and I'll add them to the list in the OP.

      Merry Christmas!

It's The Big Day Today !

Hope some BBC and Guardian guys are there too.

So Mark, you've got yourself a longer boat to row in the rain and cold today?
For that, I'll add another $3 per mile on top of the $5.

Post the video clips and photos in your blog. We'll promote it for traffic. And add PayPal donate button in there. So your effort will continue after the event.

I'm spending time in China (Shenzhen & Guangzhou) for a month starting this Christmas. Exploring the wholesale markets out there for potential products that I can sell Online.

Hope PayPal's working in China. Don't want to miss my pledge for Ken's benefit.

By the way, how do I get to fulfill it? Where is the PayPal link?

EDIT : found the link, taken from Bill Platt's signature. Now its in my sig.

Okay, well truth be told I've hit on a bit of a problem which I've been trying to fix all afternoon. Driving me up the wall. Only just got back in the door a few minutes ago at 10pm.

Pretty much everything is good to go except for the boat. Mine is still out of the water, so this afternoon I shot down to Port Navas Creek where I used to keep one of my boats (now sold that one a year ago) to check out some of the other boats there.

Every single one bar one, is unsuitable for the task. Either the rowlock broken on the gunwale or like most of them on this creek, either one or the other gunwale completely rotten. As in completely had it.

I had a good chat with my mate Pete who lives on one of the boats down there and asked him about the boat on the far end of the beach. Bloody typical, I spent an hour emptying the hull of rainwater this afternoon (it was 3/4 full) with the intention of nicking it (borrowing it for the day) for this fundraiser.

Trust me, of all the boats on the bloody creek, who does this one belong to but the local bobby in Mawnan Smith. (Local policeman).

So whilst I'm tempted - lol, it might be stretching things a bit far borrowing this particular craft without first seeking his direct permission to use it. So in effect, I'm scuppered.

Had a look at Pete's aluminium dinghy but the rivets in that thing, well, let's just say it leaks like a sieve. Not too much of a problem because I've got a bailer made out of a 4 pint plastic milk bottle cut in half but still, a bit of a risk.

Next drove down to the Ferryboat Inn at Helford Passage to see if I could see the old boy Arthur walking his dog at 5pm. Old Cornish boy in his late 70's, used to be a boat builder. Nice bloke. Salt of the earth. As down to earth as they come.

Caught up with him, asked, "Got a boat for me Authur?" Explained the situation to him but the only thing he's got available, an 11' fibreglass dinghy is up at his farm and again, no bloody trailer. So now...

I'm scratching my head a little bit, perplexed and feeling a mite embarrassed. Sure something will turn up in the next few days but for now it's looking like I might have to put this off tomorrow.

Weathers not brilliant at the moment either. Can hardly ever rely on the forecast here, not even at the best of times. They can only accurately forecast the weather max' about 3 days ahead.

At the moment it's still raining (when according to the forecast it's supposed to be dry) and the wind is still blowing force 4 (westerly) when it's been forecast force 2. That's by and by though. I've been out rowing before in a force 6 (30mph winds in a 7' swell) with the water coming over the transom. Doesn't bother me too much.

It's this boat thing which is the bugger to sort out. Of course, this time of the year, most of the better boats in good shape are all laid up ashore on the hard standing under lock and key. Not much of any use is still tied to the trees on the river bank.

As a last resort tomorrow morning, I'll pop down to Port Navas Yacht Club (very posh) and see if they've got anything they can lend me for a few hours. Only need a bloody 10 footer, got two sets of oars in the van, rowlocks, lifejacket - everything else.

Sorry folks but you're going to have to bear with me for a few days on this one. Again I'm going to be dependent on local weather conditions and day time tide times.

I'm ever so sorry and apologise most profusely but thought I should update you all, keep you in the loop, the picture.

          Mark Andrews

PS What'll do (sorry I'm talking Cornish in the local lingo here)... what'll do tomorrow morning is see if Port Navas Yacht Club is open, have a chat with them, explain the situation, ask them for a dinghy and leave my van keys and documents with them as a deposit so they'll know I'll bring the dinghy back to them at the end of the day.

Got to be worth a shot.

This is a total distance of 62 miles and will include a large stretch of Atlantic rowing.

We are doing this as a charity event for the Cornwall Hospice Care trust.

One of our crew has a close link to the Mount Edgecombe branch of the trust, so the chosen cause is close to our hearts. Our target is to raise ten thousand pounds and raise awareness for the Trust throughout the county.

        Tuesday 3rd January

Right Sunday is off the cards due to a possible impending hangover from New Years Eve on Saturday night, although still undecided whether or not I'll be going out tomorrow night. Getting a bit old and long in the tooth these days for gallivanting out on the tiles.

Monday is definitely off the cards, lightning is forecast. I know I might look a little dumb at times but even I'm not so stupid to even think about setting off rowing on the river in an aluminium boat with the chance of lightning being around. So Monday is definitely out.

By the looks of it Tuesday is best albeit... the wind will be the problem. Winds gusting to 30mph+. But I don't want to put it off anymore so... Tuesday it is.

Although I won't be setting off from Durgan since this is too close to the mouth of the river with winds gusting to Force 6/7. It can get very choppy just offshore from Durgan so that's out of the equation.

I'll be setting off from the top of Port Navas Creek, rowing downstream to the mouth of the creek about 1 1/2 miles, turning to starboard on entering the main river and then using the trees on the bank for cover, wend my way slowly upstream to Gweek before heading back again.

It's slightly shorter by a mile but I'll make up for this somehow. A little detour into either Frenchman's Creek, Calamansack Creek or Mawgan Creek can make up the difference.

        Tuesday it is then.

        High tide at 1153hrs. Perfect.

        Weather forecast...

Rain clearing to showers on Tuesday. Wind 30-35mph from the south west. Maximum temperature 12C / 53F.

Last push for some more sponsorship, if you haven't donated yet...

...now is as good a time as any to do so.

What are YOU willing to pledge on behalf of someone else in need?

Ken Strong, copywriter and moderator of this Copywriting Forum needs all the help he can get at the moment in his fight against cancer.

This is the sole reason why I'm carrying out this 10 mile row, to help raise money for him and the cancer charities he wants to support.

So come on, be a good sport, come New Years Eve you'll think nothing about pouring copious amounts of alcohol down your throats for a pretty penny or two just to piss it up against the wall an hour later and all for a jolly good hangover in the morning. OW!

Why not donate just the cost of one pint of beer or the cost of a double spirit to this good cause instead and save yourself a major headache in the morning?!

And whatever you donate publicly below...

Rick Duris will kindly match your offer, your pledge in effect making your offer of sponsorship twice as valuable!

So please do get in on this now and together let's help raise some more money towards a very good cause.

        In advance, many thanks!

What do you want to donate now?...

        $50? 100?

        $20? 40?

        $10? 20?

        $5? 10?

        $1? 2?

If per mile - please say so.

Please donate at least a little something now...

          Mark,

You big wuss! Put me down for $50 but ONLY if you promise to go out and get wasted on New Years eve... and we want photos! :-)

But seriously, put me down for $50.

As Paul pointed out, it's easy for us to sit behind our computers and donate products and put together special offers at times like these but it takes a different kind of person to actually take some physical action and do something like this.

Spent the entire afternoon trying to sort out another boat to no avail. There is the possibility of one, albeit again it would mean using the boat without asking for the owners permission which kind of well, just isn't right.

So the only other thing I can do is to try and get a trailer for my boat which is on the driveway at the moment and tow it down to the river. Trouble is the tides are working against me after tomorrow. Ideally I need a high tide at Gweek at about 11am in the morning. Tomorrow's high tide is at 1355hrs (4.5m) and the weather forecast...

Cloudy with hill fog and outbreaks of rain, some heavy, moving eastwards across the region overnight. Some parts drier by dawn, but patchy light rain or drizzle continuing in places, particularly across the moors. Breezy, and milder than recently.

It gets light here just after 8am at the moment and dark again just after 4:30pm.

I think I'm probably looking at the first couple of days in January now. I'm determined to do it - no excuse, it will happen, I'm pretty annoyed about it at the moment... it's weighing on my mind and I'm as eager as anyone to get this over and done with.

I'm so sorry, I really am. I feel awful not doing this today as the weather couldn't have been better. Calm, not much wind and just a very slight intermittent drizzle.

      $2,420 Raised So Far!

Can we hit $5,000 by the beginning of January?

Boat is finally sorted out, a friend is lending me his.

In fact... it's the aluminium one I mentioned before, the one which leaks like a sieve, which should make it rather interesting but at least it floats.

      Well...

...for just over an hour anyway.

It'll be fine. Note to self, take a bailer and a hand bilge pump with you Mark.

      Glug glug glug glug glug...

Righty oh! First couple of days in January the tides are looking good. Rescheduled for then.

Thanks for bearing with me on this everyone, much appreciated.

Anyone else like to pledge, whatever you can afford... now is as good a time as any to do it whilst you're in the Christmas spirit of giving.

Even a dollar donation would be appreciated, it all helps. And all the money will be going direct to Ken Strong, I'm not handling any of the money myself at all.

When I'm done, I'll let you know through Ken the Paypal address to send your donations through.

Looking good for either this Sunday 1st January - high tide is at 0957hrs (4.4m), Monday 2nd January - high tide is at 1050hrs (4.2m) or Tuesday 3rd January - high tide is at 1154hrs (4m).

Obviously Sunday I might have a bit of a hangover but depending on weather conditions the sponsored row will finally take place on one of these 3 days.

Got the boat sorted out so I'm all good to go.

How about some more offers of sponsorship please?

Whatever you can afford to give, it's all good.

Please reply below with your offer either in total or per mile pledged.

      Hello Jeff

Thanks for your offer of sponsorship.

After I've completed the row, I'll contact Ken Strong for his direct Paypal address and forward this (with Ken's permission) to every Warrior who has pledged their support.

There isn't a Paypal button on this thread.

Let's do the row first and then sort out how to get all the sponsorship to Ken Strong after.

      Spunky? Blimey! Gee thanks lol.

Unfortunately, I've not got a death wish. The weather forecast is terrible for tomorrow, so I'm having to call it off again for now. It's basically going to be bordering on white out conditions.

Here's the local shipping forecast for Plymouth from the BBC...

      Plymouth

Gale warning issued 2 January 09:50 UTC
Southwesterly storm force 10 expected later

      • Wind West or southwest, backing south for a time, 5 to 7, increasing gale 8 to storm 10.
      • Sea State Rough or very rough, occasionally high.
      • Weather Rain or squally showers.
      • Visibility Good, occasionally poor.
Btw storm force 10 is 60mph winds.

And here's the inshore / coastal waters forecast for Tuesday 3rd January 2012...

      Strong wind warning
      18:00 UTC Mon 2nd Jan - 18:00 UTC Tue 3rd Jan
      • Wind West or southwest 5 to 7, increasing gale 8 to storm 10 at times.
      • Sea State Moderate or rough in east at first, otherwise very rough or high.
      • Weather Showers at first, rain or drizzle for a time.
      • Visibility Good, occasionally moderate or poor.
      18:00 UTC Tue 3rd Jan - 18:00 UTC Wed 4th Jan
      • Wind West 5 to 7, occasionally gale 8 near headlands.
      • Sea State Moderate or rough, but very rough or high in west.
      • Weather Fair.
      • Visibility Good.
Issued at 18:00 UTC on Monday 2nd Jan

As luck would have it, I'm in the west.

Sea state: very rough or high.

Even in the shelter of the Helford River it would still be suicide to attempt this row in these weather conditions and I'm certainly not about to call on the services of the RNLI the equivalent of the U.S. Coastguard to come and bail me out of a tricky situation.

Again put off until the weather conditions improve and the local tides are in my favour again.

My apologies everyone but there's not a lot I can do about this. Soon as I can, I will.

      Thanks for your understanding,

It's very easy to just sit there and be an armchair critic of other people all the time. Lets see you row 10 miles. Rather than just throwing down a digital product or two.

There's nothing I can do about the weather.

Hello? Have you seen the weather here today?

Do you know, do you have any inkling at all of the safety aspect of rowing in mid winter in tidal waters when it's blowing a force 7 plus? And today gusting up to hurricane force 12+? (106mph recorded)

You think this is an excuse?

You need your head examining sunshine.

And you of course in your infinite wisdom think no doubt, these are safe conditions to row a boat in.

              You still have done squat.

I donated my money this morning without waiting for the gale force winds to die down.

No one expects you to risk your life on this.

              Do something else.

              Bicycle.

              Play tidley winks.

But this is just a daily soap opera.

People would give the money anyway for Ken.

              Time to move on.

                  • I'm in the UK and I can promise you today is NOT a day to go sailing.

                    The weather is truly awful.

Mark, you might want to change direction and do something safer at this time of year.

And as there seems to be a bit of niggling about the "boat" thing - don't take any chances - just to prove that you'll do it.

Walk, Cycle... anything you like - there's no point in risking your life.

Or having to get rescued because of the weather.

If you want - call it all off and just make a donation.

                    None of us will mind.

                    I've just made my donation.

And I'm sure others will too.

Because, this is all about getting Kens medical bills paid and him getting better.

It was a great idea - the rowing thing - but it's turned out to be the wrong season in the UK to be doing it - it's not your fault - the weather could have been kinder - it's just bad luck that it isn't.

And we don't want to have to be concerned about getting you out of danger.

So, Ken... Are you surprised that it's the copywriters who can't resist turning this into a pissing match? If they get any worse, we're going to have our own flood, right here in this very thread!

                            Hi Mark,

                            Pledge fulfilled.

Don't risk yourself, Mark. Do it only when it is safe enough.

    Hi Mark,

I just sent in $50 to Ken as well so he can have a little more dough now. Keep us apprised of course and if you row more miles I'll add to it.

    Good luck!

Ken, donation sent. Hope you're better, my best wishes - keep it strong.

Just posting here cause after donation there is a Paypal redirect to your site but it seems it's not working properly, maybe you forgot to renew that particular domain name.

And Mark, thanks so much for bringing this issue to my/our attention.

Ken.....look for my donation later today after I get back from the doc. I feel for ya re: insurance.......in my case my physical revealed MS....which automatically killed my insurance renewal.....and once you're damaged goods it's "cash or bury".

And as I mentioned before....what ever you think it's gonna cost.......add ten grand to it. I've gone through 24K of the 30K I pulled out of the refinance of the family biz for my own cancer treatment.......and things are about the same....but the radiation is at least not making **** worse other then how I feel

Next option is surgery to remove one of the tumors...but pretty dangerous...the other is KIMO...and I wont do that....so at this point it's all about making the rest of the cash perform it's job and not worry about ****. When I feel good....I work on my projects...when I don't I sleep...probably same as you.

Keep the faith....will fire you off a payment this afternoon or this early evening east coast time...via your button.

      Get well bro........

      peace, Vegas Vince

p.s. Mark....truthfully your intentions are great they really are...but cancer aint something you can wait on the tides for, bro. The stuff spreads like wild fire if it's not handled asap. U have a good heart, no sense losing it trying to navigate in the great abyss. Everyone appreciates what you've attempted to do. Just sayin'..... aint worth losing a life over and no one needs to have your row one foot to give to Ken. peace, VV

Sorry to bring this up again, but looks like this may not happen for a while, if ever... and I don't blame Mark -- he shouldn't risk his life in the winter weather right off the open seas. But I wonder if some of the folks who pledged (and haven't already done so) would be willing to donate their pledges anyway. I'm assuming the point of this was to help me out and not simply reward Mark for rowing his boat.

I started some chemo therapy and interferon yesterday. It's low-dose, so the side effects should be much less than standard chemo, but it may slow me down a bit for a little while. And more bills not covered by the insurance keep showing up in the mail, and there will be more. Sorry to be asking when so many have been so generous already, but this is proving to be ridiculously expensive.

I can also do some limited copywriting work if anyone has need...

And thanks again to Mark for getting this whole thing rolling in the first place!

    • The weather in the UK is not safe for rowing a boat.

If nothing else it's highly possible to hit an iceberg and become a mini titanic (it's freezing cold at the moment).

At some stage Mark will do the deal.

In the meantime - just assume he has done it - and donate to Ken.

      He needs the help.
