Momma told me there'd be days like this...

You're a copywriter...

At least that was the plan.

You've taken the latest course...they said you'd have clients crawling on their hands and knees wanting you to write a sales letter for them.

You look out the window...there's no crawlers in sight.

The problems don't stop there.

The rents due.

lLandlord: Hey Pat, calling to see if you have last month's rent.

You: Works a little slow right now...I'm working on it (hoping something changes in the next 5 minutes)...I'll try and have it in a couple days -- (same story as last month with just a different twist).

Lord knows you're too embarrassed to tell him you quit your good factory job to become a full time copywriter.

You're even starting to have doubts.

Your old jalopy needs a new battery -- you keep your fingers crossed every time you go to start it.

Your spouse keeps telling you that she just knows you'll be good...

You lay in bed at night telling her how great things will be once you get your big break...but you're starting to get the vibe that she's running out of patience.

Sound like you?

No?

You'll probably not want to read the rest of this post.

If you're still here...there's good news.

You're a copywriter.

You know how to use words.

Words can thrill, kill, make love, start wars, end wars, topple dictators, cause riots, bring massive amounts of cash into religious institutions, promise life after death, end nuclear build ups, and even bring families back together (just to name a few examples).

Then again you're probably not focused on the latest war of words between countries...

You've got bills to pay...and the groceries you bought 2 weeks ago with the money your Mother-In-Law gave you are starting to run pretty low...in fact nearly gone.

Time to take action.

Here's the plan.

Find a product and sell it...something unique...a real live product...something you can lay claim to in your area.

You're good with words...screw waiting around on clients...let's make something happen!

There's millions of products out there...I'll use this one as an example...purely off the top of my head. I have no affiliation with this type of product or anything remotely associated with it.
-----
I'm always hearing on the news about home robberies, break-ins, prowlers, stalkers, things that go bump in the night, ghosts, goblins, etc.

Did you know there's a security camera that you can mount by your front or back door, or wherever you want...you can simply take your T.V. remote...put it on a certain channel and watch live feed from the camera?

A knock on the door...click...instantly see who it is before opening the door.

Think of the possibilities.

Heck, you can even be laying in bed...hear something outside...click on the channel and check out what's going on...no need to ever get up.

They're cheap.

Who couldn't sell these? Buy them wholesale and sell them at retail or higher.

The plan.

Use a free program off the internet...like Adobe Fireworks, GIMP, Paint Shop, etc., and create a flyer.

You can use one full page and make two flyers from it.

Should cost you about 7 cents per page...or about 4 cents per flyer.

Print one off your computer, then go to the print shop and have a couple hundred or so printed.

On one side I'd make it look like a placard you hang on your door at a motel that said: "Do Not Disturb". Make it in big bold letters so it's easily spotted.

Next go around and hang these on doors in neighborhoods.

Yep, you've got to do a little leg work...and yep, someone might see you trudging around the neighborhoods hanging flyers...

Your other option would be sitting round waiting for your website to take off...or some client to call.

It's time to get tired of waiting.

The back side will be a mini sales piece that will excite them to learn more.

You could say something like: "Don't you wish it was just that easy...a sign on your door that told would be bad guys not to bother you?"...blah, blah, blah.

If you can afford a website, you can direct them there. Give a phone number for them to contact you.

Here's the thing...

Not everyone will respond.

But every good salesman/marketer knows that one customer can lead to tons more.

It's the best way to get more business.

You'll want to get all the referrals you can from each customer you get.

Of course after you install the camera, etc., they'll be so happy with you, they'll gladly give you referrals.

Wondering what this has to do with copywriting?

You're using words to drum up business...which means cash in your pocket.

It's also a great resume builder when you announce how wealthy you became from your sales campaign.

As I said, there's a ton of products out there to sell.

I offered this one as an example.

Use your imagination.

The important thing is that you get up off your hind end...and make something happen.

The point I'm trying to make is this...

There's a fortune to be made with a little ingenuity.

If you're a copywriter, and you don't have cash rolling in...then you're focusing on the wrong plan.

You can do it...it's easy.

Just some thoughts

  • Max,

    Brilliant post.

And pure inspiration for "new" copywriters.

Or for anyone whose become a bit disheartened or "lost" their way.

In good times and bad - people always need something.

As you said - just find it and sell it - using the power of words.

Yes, this post highlights the importance of doing more than just sticking out your shingle and saying "I'm in business!" to an uncaring world.

I worry that if they don't have $$ for rent, they probably don't have $$ for printing up materials.

Pick a niche and promote yourself within it. Stick to that niche and gain some traction.

You're probably going to have to (*gasp*) cold call some businesses. Calling is cheap to do and you can reach a large number of prospects. Great thing about that is you're one step closer to not competing on price alone.

There's quite a number of things wrong with your grand scheme. Three obvious ones are -

    1. you need the money to invest in stock. So how's your man going to afford stock and flyers if he can't even pay his rent?

    2. most people these days - unless they're Amish - go online to see what's available and to compare prices - ESPECIALLY with electrical and electronic goods.

    3. people aren't inclined to buy this sort of gear from some random bozo going door-to-door with his home-made flyers.

You'd be much better off building a website - you know - on that thing with the tubes - the internets.

You could be an affiliate - making a healthy commission. You would reach far more potential customers than working your neighborhood - without having to invest in stock.

With the right keywords its doable. I just checked. For instance "Home security camera" gets 2,433 Broad Searches a day.

The #1 site on Google for those keywords has potential DAILY earnings of $5,000k +.

Its 2011 - not 1955. Online is where fortunes are being made.

I must admit that at first I got a little upset with your feedback...

      Then I got to thinking...

      I'm 51 and a retired millionaire.

You're around 60 and still on the internet looking for customers.

I've never sold a thing online.

      Seems you're still trying.

Yes it's patently obvious you've never sold a thing online. Perhaps you're lost? Look up. It says "The #1 Internet Marketing Forum".

    Than you Max5ty,

That's good information. In this day and age, you have to do whatever you can to put food on the table for your family.

One suggestion for people is to ask for a 50% deposit if they don't have the cash. That will enable them to buy the stock.

The other advantage of your suggestion is that most people could not be bothered or have the knowledge of how to install the cameras - so the offer to have it installed for them is an added bonus and you could charge a little extra for the installation.

Great post, Max. There really is money everywhere when you know how to harness the power of words.

A month ago, we had a setback on our new tourist business in Cancun and decided to scuttle the whole idea. (Long story but in short, I didn't want to deal with the "groups" down here offering "protection")

    So back to square one.

I found a guy struggling with an ATV jungle tour business and partnered with him. We injected $30,000 in the form of 12 brand new ATVs and 6 zip lines. I'm creating the website, T-shirts and REAL sales brochures. I'm adding professional photography and some other touches. My 50% is bringing me about $7,000 a month right now, and it's still low season. It will be $25-30k/month this high season. I'm putting some other things in place online to triple that the next year.

But I realize not everyone has $30k laying around to do this. So let me tell you where I'm getting another $500k/year, all offline.

I created a simple, 4-fold brochure in MS Publisher. Its filled with juicy secrets about Cancun that only us locals know. I'm not going into more detail than that but I'm selling this with a poster I created, essentially a sales letter packed with wickedly enticing bullets.

We're recruiting people on the streets, markets and kiosks to sell it for $8, they keep $4. My printing costs are $1.24 on tabloid card stock, folded and ready to go so I net $2.64/sale.

Sales are picking up nicely and we're getting more and more commissioned sales people everyday from a classified ad as well as just visiting the markets and signing people up. There are a lot of people here happy to sell 10/day and make their $40/day while I make my 26.40/day from each of them simply restocking the pamphlets.

With 10,000 tourists/day arriving, I think 500/day is a very reasonable target, which is around $500k / year. This entire business was started on less than $500. No website. No email addresses. Nothing. (though I am adding a website soon)

The key is, I can do this because I know how to sell with the written word and my girlfriend and I don't sit around on our asses waiting for people to come to us.

If I don't do $1 million in the next year, I have only myself to blame.

To my Warrior friends with the negative comments...and talk about something posted 2 years ago, which I haven't the slightest idea about...

"Momma Told Me There'd Be Days Like This"

@Bruce Wedding - That's some motivational stuff...everyone should take a lesson from you

    @Ken Caudill - You nailed it...as always.

    @Jake Daley - LOL...guess I got the words wrong...

@Abugah - You're right, it's all about the words...usually takes less than people think.

    @Kaniganj - great advice.

@Steve Copywriter - I like the part about "lost their way", sometimes the dream loses it's excitement when "real" life kicks in.

@DianaHeuser - Great idea about charging extra for the installation

Bickering aside, I appreciate the idea that Max has suggested. And while it's not technically about internet marketing, in the absence of Michael Fortin's old board this is probably the closest thing to a full on copywriting forum I've found.

At the core is the simple idea: Find a need and satisfy it.

Personal security is a big concern for people. They want to be more secure in their homes. Especially the elderly or young mums at home with their kids.

And a hook of being able to view it on their TV is great.

Plus, I'm sure you can sell it, take payments and place orders. If the units are not expensive you can have a couple, sell them and re-invest the money in 4. Then 8, etc etc.

Installation is pretty important though. People want it done for them. Guys are fine, they'll do it themselves. But the people who want this probably aren't always guys.

There are plenty of ways you can put together a flyer. Then test and measure. So much scope for promoting it.

Hell, I'm even wondering if it works in Australia! You can probably oursource the delivery of flyer and installation cheap.

I totally agree, "words" can bring in countless fortunes to people who use it correctly. So long as us humans stick to verbal language copywriting will continue to be a powerful sales tool.
