What Was Your Copywriting Milestone In 2011?

The year 2011 was great for me…

1. This was the year I reached a level I was booked solid. In fact, I turned down a client not because he was a poor pick with little money but because I was not ready to disappoint him with late deliveries.

2. This was the year I discovered that in the in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king. It occurred to me that there are millions of people who have never heard of copywriting, direct response or internet marketing. And anyone who has just gone through John Caples Tested Advertising Methods once can make an enormous living guiding these ‘blind’ people.

3. This was the year I discovered that the biggest factor hindering career movement is confidence. The ability to step out in faith. To move away from the pack and provide leadership.

4. This was the year I discovered that the best way to master copywriting is to teach the craft. You teach by mentoring, giving courses, writing articles and forum comments.

5. This was the year I discovered the 10,000 hours rule which says that you must put in these many hours in whatever field to be an expert. I went ahead and opened an excel sheet where I monitor my progress towards this mark. I’m happy to report the progress so far is impressive.

Well, there are a few more days before the year ends. But...

What were your milestones in 2011? I would appreciate if you shared.

abugah, that was inspiring. I'm really new at copywriting and have been frustrated because my sales copy hasn't been working (changing it again and again). But after reading the part about 10,000hours I realized I've gotta keep going and get into the flow of it. I guess my only milestone for 2011 is finishing my ebook and getting it online...no sales though lol.
    Thank you for your post!

Congratulations for finishing your first ebook.

Keep moving...keep moving. Do not stop, look backwards, sideways or down. Just focus on the price. The day you will command $25,000 copy fees.

If you've some money and time to spare, read a book my Malcolm Gladwell called Outliers.

Yess Malcolm Gladwell. My university professor showed us a video of him on TED Talks that's where I heard the 10,000 hours before. You know what I found out..about myself at least. It's that the 10,000 hours have to be very close in proximity with not many distractions. Too many unwanted interruptions can kill success.

I agree with that statement. Without focus achieving goals become a serious gamble. The key is to decide exactly want you want and then work like mad horse.

While we are still on the 10,000 hours rule, here is quote I found online...

A common theme that appears throughout Outliers is the "10,000-Hour Rule", based on a study by Anders Ericsson. Gladwell claims that greatness requires enormous time, using the source of The Beatles' musical talents and Gates' computer savvy as examples. The Beatles performed live in Hamburg, Germany over 1,200 times from 1960 to 1964, amassing more than 10,000 hours of playing time, therefore meeting the 10,000-Hour Rule. Gladwell asserts that all of the time The Beatles spent performing shaped their talent, "so by the time they returned to England from Hamburg, Germany, 'they sounded like no one else. It was the making of them.'" Gates met the 10,000-Hour Rule when he gained access to a high school computer in 1968 at the age of 13, and spent 10,000 hours programming on it.

And this got me thinking...How many copywriters are actually sure they have put in 10,000 hours into the craft?

This is the reason why our countries are led by bad governments, so it must apply to copywriting as well.

      I guess so...

Most politicians do not seem to understand basic principles of life. Like the law of demand and supply, cause and effect, sowing and reaping or the principle of focus.

They take actions and get surprised by the results. They shift blame else yet, many things that happen in people's lives or countries are of their own making.

On the other hand, you cannot fully blame politicians, because they cannot be better than the people who put them in office. It would then be safe to conclude that IGNORANCE is the number cause of problems in every aspect of life.

      Don't you think so?

I would like to add to that 10,000 hour remark that deliberate practice is crucial in mastery. Cal Newport writes about it very lucidly on his blog: Study Hacks » Blog Archive » The Grandmaster in the Corner Office: What the Study of Chess Experts Teaches Us about Building a Remarkable Life

Thank you for sharing your milestones with us, and to another year of milestones!
