does freelancer.com have any *REAL* copywriting jobs?

I've noticed that they lump article writing and everything like that under the copywriting category (wtf). Is there a diffferent section where you go for actual copywriting gigs, or do you just have to cherry pick their non-copywriting copywriting section for actual copywriting jobs?

They don't "lump" them together. Idiots who don't know the difference do that all by themselves. Read Allan's description of the forum and you'll find nothing about article writing hacks.

He is talking about freelancer, not this forum.

You're going to have to hunt and peck through all freelancing sites to find the real meaty copywriting jobs. I know a lot of people bash oDesk, but I'm getting some good work through there lately (and one recent WSO copywriting gig that landed me here ). Try to use a combination of sites to find better jobs; advertise your services where marketers are looking for them, instead of bidding on jobs where people are looking for low quality low price work.

Elance has gotten really crappy of late as well. I started with it a few months back and got a couple of good high-paying jobs, but in the last 6-8 weeks nothing has been awarded to anybody! I don't mean that I lost the bids--I'm usually the highest bidder and expect that--I mean that of the jobs I applied to in October and November, NOBODY got them! They haven't been awarded to anyone.

I don't mind losing out as long as I see job turnover and that projects are getting awarded, but...

I sent a message to elance about it, though if I get a reply I'll be surprised.

Another month of this (OK, I *am* waaaaay ahead on my $60 or $75 total investment, it's true) and I'll seriously consider cancelling my membership. It takes at least 1/2 hour and usually longer to write up a proposal and that time investment isn't worth it.

Agree. I've been having fabulous luck on Odesk.com of all places - there's lots of low-paying jobs and article spinning, of course, but there are also some real gems, and apparently posted by people who actually want to hire someone. I've gotten a few really fun, reasonably-paying jobs there in the last few weeks.

oDesk has gotten better?! Well, that's news! Never have had much luck with oDesk...keep starting it up and letting it go when I get discouraged. Funnily enough elance (touchwood) has picked up a bit - ever so slightly, but still!

It really just depends on how you pitch! Ask them a lot of questions, don't be afraid to overbid (the worst they can do is tell you no, right?) and project that professional image that DEMANDS good pay for good work. I've learned to scan the offers for "cheap words" that tip me off not to even bother wasting an application; spinning, "DON'T EVEN BOTHER ASKING FOR MONEY UP FRONT" blah blah. If your first inkling is that they suck, they probably do. It can pay off to take a chance with someone who is new to oDesk, but ask them for milestone payments so you're not out a few days pay for nothing.

Once you find a good client, shift them off agency work and start working with them directly. Sometimes it can be a gamble, but they're eager to get out of paying that 10% extra fee and you'll cut down that 5-6 day waiting period. Just keep at it, I've been using oDesk for over a year and I've been able to leverage experience and great ratings over time to win over the cheapest clients to great rates
